Carl the merging of religions will be complete when the anitchrist is revealed as the man of sin in 2 Thes 2. He claims to be above God and performs lying signs and wonders that even the elect would be fooled if it were possible. So if this be the abomination of desolation it would coincide with Rev 13 the beast gaining power through Satan and with exactly 42 months to go he obtains this power and rolls out the image and mark of the beast at this time. this same story and time line is also laid out in Daniel 7 with the kingdom coming when the pompous one who is persecuting for 3 1/2 years when the kingdom comes that covers the earth and has no end is given to the son of man who is before the ancient of days. The pompous one has his body given to the flame exactly like the beast in Rev 13. read these 3 chapters and see thy are synoptic.

How can an Antichrist desecrate a man-made stone temple in the earthly Jerusalem described in Revelation 11:8.

An Antichrist would have to appear in the Church of Jesus Christ and declare himself to be God, to fulfill your interpretation of scripture.
All of the Reformers believed it to be the Papacy, for this same reason.
However, Rome is not the "great city" found in Revelation 11:8.
