Newspapers are about alarmism. The current media on this climate alarmism trend has invested itself in that everything about American lifestyle must be bad for the planet & they continue to push this pie in the sky social justice. None of the journalists currently reporting on climate is spending day upon day in textbook or class etc. They are just picking apart alarmist cliches & trying to promote a view. Most current example is USA Today in the last 2 weeks. Caught my eye because it related some laws of physics & our current pandemic. For those that don't know. virions & bacteria need some kind of host to survive & replicate. One thing they inhibits their ability to flourish is a small part of the sun's spectrum called UV radiation. UV radiation is short-wave thus higher energy frequency than visible light hence it can damage DNA (aka skin cancer). So this article reported that the journalist found this to be absolutely false. I am absolutely stunned by this. Back in my first course of environmental pollution in 1978 when we were studying wastewater treatment, it is the 3rd or tertiary stage of water treatment plants to treat the now sludge-free water with UV radiation to dispose of such things as cholera. Likewise the principle applies to day. Where the rays can be prevalent, the virions may certainly disperse. This is why I have been telling people to ensure they get their fresh air during the pandemic. The sunlight facilitates Vitamin D formation via UV which arms the immune system, particularly in the respiratory tract.

The media has a vested interest in alarmist headlines - they often cry wolf, but that doesn't mean there isn't a wolf. This is why you should look past the headlines to find what the consensus of published, peer-reviewed research papers is telling you.

p.s. daily vitamin E (~200 iu) is also thought to reinforce immune response.

You can cling to your global warming theory but I have read enough of the people that put Al Gore back in his cave. The original set of people that set off the warming thing-well indeed graphs were fudged-by editing pieces out & connecting others. Readings were taken on asphalt parking lots & volcanic rims. A couple of the major people were not peer-reviewed. If you understand what college is like now--well it's a business of indoctrination & cash cow grants. So if you're a prof whose rep hates anything to do with oil or coal, you're going to go with global warming nonsense. However, if you're say a prof whose a chemical engineer with specialty on jet fuel, your rep is likely to be more friendly.

Incidently, the 2nd law of thermodynamics is the one that confronts mankind in urban centers. Entropy is the consequence of any mechanical form of work & this is what fuels discomfort. Not the easiest thing to address, but all avenues have to be explored: what's better the asphalt road here or concrete; then there is the idea of the tall building that keeps convection constrained; add up all the store lights, the stop lights/walk lights, the heat from the subway system, the furnaces from the building, the use of electricity, the cars, the buses, the trains, the trolleys. It's a very high density of this stuff. Probably can' t be conquered only modified. E.g. more urban forestry including buildings topped with garden plants; the maglev train might be a better train in that you might be able to avoid the sulfur, lead, & mercury of coal on the electric side; stop lights/walk lights powered by solar panels (done in NJ); I'd probably say set up a windmill plant proximal to a city to see if convection can be generated thru the city to at least move the air around. Electrical use here still allows for entropy, thing is can you cut it down?

Oh wait, you have none.

What does any of this have to do with entropy, or for that matter, climate change?

Viruses don't cause global warming, so why are you talking about them?

All you have to is read any of the stuff by these people: Tim Ball, Freeman Dyson, Willie Soon, Pat Moore, Tony Heller, Judy Kushner, Chris Mockton, Rich Lindzen, Fred Singer, Fred Pielke, Pat Michaels. Mann & Cook were seen to improperly displayed their graphs. Hansen was looking for a cash cow, given that NASA's budget was decimated by Obama. Oreskes is a science history writer & did not follow scientific method as was the grad student. Issue began to unravel circa 2012 so now there are some 31,000 scientists that don't want to give any endorsement. The 97% consensus was also found to be a dubious manipulation. These people above come from all ranks of earth science, including geology, meteorology, atmospheric physics, physics, etc.

Everything. The urban heat island effect, a notorious result of entropy is the hardest thing to control. This explains the warmth in the area of a city. Lots of machinery running & since no mechanical process is 100% perfectly efficient, all give off waste heat. This heat trapped by tall skyscrapers, dark surfaces like asphalt or steel, no movement of air. As population centers grow, there is a higher density of things operating, more entropy scooting up in the air parcel, this is what people are feeling in nearby suburbs in terms of warmth.

Gee you're not very well-read. Connect the dots of journalists who pretend to be journalists & then present an article on UV radiation & how people should not believe that UV radiation does break down virions & bacteria. Point being a) UV radiation illustrates a solar property which of course has everything to do with an effect on Earth & b) media are writing garbage; this has been a fact for some years & yet the media is rushing to say it's not true. Do they not want people to get fresh air? Maybe.

How is this about "the media"? I though this thread was about global warming.

No it's about heating, not entropy. (Hint: it's in the name.) The urban heat island effect is certainly real, but just for the record, the compilers of climate data know this. (In fact they discovered it.)

Really and what Universe do you come from?
In our Universe the change in entropy is the change in the thermal reservoir for some given temperature. The change in the mechanical reservoir is zero.

The textbook definition of entropy is.
Entropy, the measure of a system's thermal energy per unit temperature that is unavailable for doing useful work. Because work is obtained from ordered molecular motion, the amount of entropy is also a measure of the molecular disorder, or randomness, of a system.

If don't believe this and think its another horrendous conspiracy, then explain what mechanical work is being performed when a sealed container of gas undergoes an entropy change when the surrounding temperature changes.

The only one I've even heard of is Dyson, but this isn't about math/theoretical physics, so I fail to see the point of "reading" him.

My point is on the media is I don't buy all the garbage the media has put out to advance the cause of global warming. Many people swallow the junk hook line & sinker because they figure oh if it's in the news it must be true. The media does not do journalism. And if one is opposing their theory & researching one sees the media garbage on any climate trend extends far back into the decades so the media can't predict warming. The bottom line is there is no consensus on this issue other than there are many feedback loops that link all the earth sciences & it takes a good education to see what has happened over time. You people live in a rather narrow world. God forbid you think Al Gore was St. Paul. Its bunk. Climate changes because it changes. What college education should do is give one the skills to critically reason. Go spend some time in quaternary geology.

Boy your world is narrow. Dyson was a physicist. Physics explains laws of energy, force, motion, properties of the atom. To think physics has no effect on any earth process, boy your world is shallow.

What happens to a runner when he goes out for a 7 mile run. All that ATP he makes does not go into work. Lots is simply lost as the form of heat-better known as entropy. What happens when the body warms too much-it sweats. Evaporation of sweat cools the body.

Who are these other people that I should care what they said? None of them are as generally famous as Dyson.

I'm familiar with physics, it's on all of my degrees and institutional address. Knowing physics doesn't mean you understand climate modeling and feedbacks.
