  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You don't think advocating violence against potential whistleblowers is inherently harmful?
I’m asking what actual harm this type of Christian inflicts upon other actual people.

And so far, the only response I’ve seen is pearl-clutching.

An assault on human dignity isn't good enough?

No that isn't it, you are constantly making such claims, but when pressed for details, you, well, you do what you are doing now, basically telling us what you're claiming isn't true..Not fair, not Jesus like

Insinuations of physical violence are assaults on human dignity.

He's a perfect president, he's running what is basically a business like a business, he loves what he's doing and he's doing a great Job while still able to shrug off all the nasty jealous spoiled sports that constantly harass him.

It's like he was made for this position.

What is the "harm" you speak of, precisely. I can sit here and call you a mean person but if I can't give any details on why, my comment is no more than a lie as far as anyone else can see...get it?

And so far, the only response I’ve seen is pearl-clutching.

I'm not familiar with this guy specifically, so I can't speak to actual harm he himself has inflicted, but harmful behaviors I've seen come from the greater evangelical community include:

  • Stigmatization of mental illness and dismissing of secular treatments of it.
  • Dismissal of concerns regarding sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and spousal abuse.
  • Stigmatization of HIV/AIDS and dismissive attitudes towards science-based treatments.
  • Stigmatization of drug abuse and dismissive attitudes towards science-based treatments.
  • Hatred towards, lies about, and support for discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
  • Racism
  • Pushing of ideologies in school textbooks based on bad science and/or history.
  • Unconditional, uncritical support of the Israeli state.
  • Promotion of government policies that generally impose austerity on the poor and largesse on the wealthy.
  • Resistance against government policies that protect the environment, including on issues that directly impact public health.
  • Support of war-mongering.

Some of those (especially the last few) are something of a byproduct of their close association with the Republican party, but they're still pushed by many American Christians and they cause demonstrable harm.

When a Christian leader says this, it makes non-Christians think Christianity is the religion of love as much as those who disparage Islam believe Islam is the religion of peace. This is a stumbling block to people coming to faith in their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is becoming apparent in recent years Christians are more concerned about winning political power for themselves than winning souls for Christ. Everything good you say Trump did has come at the cost of destroying your Christian witness to the unbelieving world. But I’m sure Jesus will be more impressed by the earthly riches you amassed than the souls you led to him.

One things for certain, Trump becoming president has made it easier for us to make a distinction between the wheat and the chaff within the American Church.
i guess it was a local blindness then. as an immigrant on the receiving end of a lot of the evil and hatred spewed by christians in america it's always been obvious.

Funny, as I understood it, bottom line was, Trump ran his business well enough to become rich. Are you really not aware of that?

As Tim Keller has pointed out recently, in parts of the US Evangelicalism is more of a folk religion and being "born again" is just fulfilling a cultural expectation. Which means the label "Evangelical" has become somewhat meaningless.
Interesting. If you have a link to Keller about that, I'd be interested.

That is so true! The "Light" can shine anywhere ---- the most Christlike person I have ever personally met was a Hindu.
Reminds of Romans ch 2, v 6-16

He's rich...are you not able to comprehend the connection?
The connection between him getting rich and the country going deeper into debt? Please explain that one to me.

And its not just govt debt. Household debt has been on the ascent during his term too.

An assault on human dignity isn't good enough?
Again, who specifically has been assaulted? Who specifically has done the assaulting?

These are not complicated questions.
