My dad is deaf with-out his. I have some hearing loss and probably need hearing aids, but can't afford them.
I've been wearing a hearing aid since I was about six years old. Long, long time now.
Only one though - the right ear is that deaf it's not worth putting a hearing aid in. All it would do is whistle Dixie, and drive everyone else mad.
Back then the hearing aid sat in a shirt pocket with a lead going up to the ear piece, and used two AA batteries in about two days. Now they use a very small button battery and it lasts about a week and a half.
I couldn't get along without it. But they're pricey all right. Having worn them for so long I'm a bit leery when it comes to their marketing claims about how they are dealing with noisy backgrounds. In my experience they're still a long way from normal hearing in those situations. Plenty of noise, but not much clarity.
As for not joining in much in group conversation ... a chap I know through a sport we both play came up to me a year or so ago and said "Now I know why you don't join in much with group conversation."
It turned out he'd lost about a third of his hearing overnight, due to a virus apparently. Now he has to wear hearing aids. He used to wonder why I didn't say much since it was evident I could hear. But then he said "Now I just can't join in. And I used to be pretty good at back-chat!"
They certainly help (indispensable in my case), but they're nowhere near as good as normal hearing.
