The more I think about it the more confused I get.
I have a 500 mg capsule. I need to give a kitten 5-10 mg's per pound. The kitten probably weighs a pound or a pound and a half. So how much water do I mix with the contents of the capsule to give it say 7mg's of the medicine? YIKES!
Thanks for your help. I don't think it has to be right on the dot exact.
I need to give it every 12 to 24 hours, for 5 days. I am sure there will be plenty left over.

I'm sorry I can't work that out either because wouldn't that mean that you would have to give , if it were 10 MG's out of 500mg you would have to work out 1/50th of 500 MG's?

And a capsule you can't really divide up, what is the capsule? If a vet gave you it you should have medication suitable for your kittens dosage.
I do hope your little kitten gets on well they are precious little babies.

If you have an eye dropper, the amount of water in it should be enough, I think it equals about a tea spoon.

That way you can stick it right in the mouth and squirt it all in., a little bit more or less won't make that much difference if you giving it for a week, it will all equal out.

I am going to assume that you are only able to divide the pill into 10 equal groups. So that would be 50 mg. Add 10 dropper of water. So each dropper in your mixture should be 5 mg.

Do you need to know the ratio of water to medication? As long as the medicine gets down the neck (that's the hard part) it should be fine.

  • Whatever amount of water you use to dilute the capsule, the dose should be 7/500, or .014, or 1.4% of that amount.
  • So if you dilute the capsule into 1 cup of water, .014 times 240 ml is 3.4 ml, or 2/3 teaspoon, or 3.4 eyedroppers full.
  • If you use half a cup, divide the results by two. A quarter cup, divide by two again.
  • An eyedropper holds 16 drops, or 1 ml, or 1/5 teaspoon.

Its easier for me to look at it the way you do except as 5mg's. So then to figure out what 100 mg's of liquid would be I tried a mg to ounce converter but it was too confusing.
The capsule is powder so pouring it into water but how much water would be a correct dose of 5mg's? Is this more confusing? I can't afford a vet. I feed up to 20 cats and that is a 100 a month and there are many that need care and so I have to try and work it out myself.

1 capsule is a dose for a person so I would think that for a kitten you would need a lot of water added. I need to dose her soon as she is failing.

Here is what it says:
Amoxicillin is a prescription medication available as 100 mg and 400 mg tablets, 250 mg and 500 mg capsules. Amoxicillin Drops suspension is also available in a 15 ml bottle. The usual dose of amoxicillin in dogs and cats is 5-10 mg/lb every 12-24 hours

If I am thinking correctly could you all tell me how much liquid 100 mg's of water would be? If that is correct thinking?

I am doing something wrong. Google says that 100ml of water is 3.4 ounces. So I mix the capsule with 3.4 ounces? That would be giving the kitten the whole capsule. or do I mix 3.4 of water with 5 mg's of the capsule? Oh wow, I am so confused!

More likely I x's the 3.4 times 5?

The capsule plus 8 ounces of water.
Thank you so much for this. I think I finally understand what you are saying. And I think just in time as she is getting worse. I am very grateful.
God bless you and all of you!!

Except that if you use that much water you are going to be putting a lot of water into the kitten.

If this works I am going to try it on the kitten whose mother poked his eye out and it has been oozing. The only problem is he is not very tame. Oh dear God please let this work. In 4 years I have not been able to save them much at all only able to feed and provide outside shelter. Prayers please.
Thank you:)

ps hot water worked to dissolve it.

Another alternative is to use food rather than water to dilute the pill. Mix the pill's contents into the food, then use 1.4% of the total food for each dose. That should get around the antagonistic cat problem.

I don't think the adding of water matters much so long as you get the right amount of medication into your kitten. God bless you for being so caring as to looking after all those cats.
I will pray for you and hope it goes well. I am bad with maths, my mind boggles so I'm not much help.
I understand about the costs of vets, it can be simply too expensive and wish there was some way people could get help regardless of cost.
Please let us know how you get on.
Maybe in the future it would be easier with the 100 mg tablets as then you could probably cut them and then just administer as a pill???
