  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here's an interesting question for you.

Not long ago I had food poisoning, almost a week of it. I decided it was probably my favorite ice cream that did it. You see this store I go to has given it to me before because when someone decides they don't want their frozen food they put it anywhere in the store instead of putting it back in the freezer. Along comes a worker, picks it up and puts it in the freezer after it has gotten hot and grown bacteria and then I come along and buy it. Going on with this story, remember it is my favorite ice cream and I am not absolute that it is it that made me sick and most of the ice cream is still there. So here's the question. If I just had a bite and not two cups would the illness be the same as if I ate two cups. One bite every once in a while? One bite would give me another 5 days of food poisoning or just a minor intestinal ache?

In other words does the amount of tainted food affect the degree of illness you get from it?

I know, they almost did the first time. I really thought I was going to die. I have complained to no avail.

I would throw it out, but whether or not it has become toxic depends on how long it was actually at room temperature. Bacteria don't grow instantly, nor would the ice cream had fully thawed instantly.

Nor would it have re-frozen to its usual consistency. If it didn't look differently from usual as you scooped it out, it probably hadn't thawed, at least not thoroughly.

The problem is it could have been put back in the freezer days before I came along, waiting for me.:)

HI ilovjcsog,

I doubt it's the ice cream. I'm not an expert by any means on food borne illnesses, but I like ice cream. For ice cream to have been out long enough for bacteria to grow on it, it would pretty much have to melt down quite a bit. My experience with seriously melted ice cream is that it doesn't refreeze to the same consistency and so you'd likely be able to tell that the ice cream had melted down that much.

Secondly, if the ice cream had melted down that much, I doubt that a store employee is going to put it back in the freezer. However, let me repeat that I'm no expert at this, but that's my understanding. Generally, most grocers try to store ice cream at 0 degrees, but 5-10 degrees would be possible. They want it to be good and hard to make the trip home. But the point is that a container of ice cream would have to be left out for a while. However, it does depend on the size of the ice cream container. Naturally, pints would reach an unsafe temperature faster than the 1 1/2 quart size.

Anyway, if you're convinced that it was the ice cream, then throw it out. No since in testing the theory over $4-5 worth of ice cream. You could also take it back to the store and tell them that you think it may have thawed. I know Publix will pretty much give you your money back no matter what.

I know that I've had ice cream in the trunk of my car, which is a black car, for 30 minutes or so and it's still been pretty frozen when I get it home.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

I don't know, but it's not worth the risk. I agree with others that you should throw it out. That's true in the future with any food that makes you sick.

Cookie dough.
That would be the most likely as cookie dough they say is dangerous to eat now. Nice try though, lol
