Not everybody does have a need for one... But that is no reason to take them either... People should have the right to own one or not.

There was a certain country that banned the private ownership of firearms recently (in 2012) because they wanted to cut down on "violence": Venezuela bans private gun owners

Then their homicide rate greatly increased: In the wake of a gun ban, Venezuela sees rising homicide rate

And now the country is in shambles and they're regretting it: Venezuelans regret gun ban, 'a declaration of war against an unarmed population'

Perhaps following the same course of action isn't so wise for the United States.

So why did you propose it as a possibility?

Just to show the absurdity of the homeowner being a final say what he deems is a sufficent defence for his household instead of legistalation.

Most of the developed nations share similiar thought about absurdity of having an assault rifle in civilian hands especially since some of the arguments I have seen here promote it because gun owner might miss a lot and needs to have plenty of firepower.

Just the kind of person you want to have next door.

You were absurd. That says nothing about anyone else.

No, I don't put my total trust in legislation. Legislation once made my people slaves.

Things happening at the same time are not necessarily causally connected.

They didn't happen at the same time. They happened as the years progressed. Now we see the end result.

When someone is shooting at you and trying to kill you, it's not as easy to stay calm, cool and collected so that you can fire one carefully aimed shot at the guy who's trying to kill you and probably isn't going to stand still so you can stop him.

I agree, that`s probably why certain document talks about well trained militia having arms instead of gun happy untrained and scared people.

You mean our military? That explains why the Marines carry bolt action rifles and their main weapon. Oh wait.....

Not quite. Think the actual phrase is well regulated militia. Historical document.....

I can understand military having possession of military grade weapons. We can at least assume they have some experience and training by requirement unlike your average scared civilian going for his AR-15 and unloading few clips when his kid is in the kitchen getting some warm milk in the middle of the night.

And how often does that happen?

Good thing that doesn't happen.

It's just a fantasy of those who don't like guns and don't trust those who do.
Quietly I would remind you that this thread originated in the wake of 50 people, made in the image and after the likeness of God, who were gunned down as they sought to pray (maybe differently to us). Sadly this is real and not a fantasy. Each one of them, and each one of us, has been fashioned in the image and likeness of God.

I was responding to someone who had asked someone else about how often someone with an AR-15 unloads a few clips when his kid is in the kitchen getting some warm milk in the middle of the night. That's the fantasy I was referring to since I was quoting that post.

Bit satirical indeed and no it was not intended as a serious case. However plenty of family members do get shot up or shoot themselves one way or another and despite the claims of frightened gun owners studies show that owning guns in your household makes you statistically more likely to get killed.

One Nation's James Ashby filmed seeking $20m from NRA to weaken Australia's gun laws

The sidebar of this story is that the NRA of the USA would like to bring about political change in Australia. Gun control in Australia has not made Australians better people, however they have made us less lethal to one another.

Sure, as long as things are peaceful. But wait until things go downhill, and people there would become as lethal as anyone else with whatever tools they have. Guns were banned in Venezuela in 2013, and now things have become desperate--and lethal. How Hunger Fuels Crime and Violence in Venezuela

I don't consider America to be immune from such circumstances.

So if it is business as usual having no guns is admittedly better ?

And if it goes downhill with people starving and violent then everyone and their aunt including the looters having guns and using them is somehow better ?

Or is the idea here that righteous guy with a gun will beat a bad looter with a gun ? The bullets really do not care....
