I hear this claim repeated over and over again from different people that Constantine created Christianity after the council of Nicaea or the Edict of Milan. Joe Rogan makes this claim on his podcast which gets millions of downloads, Gnostics make this claim, etc.

Where does it come from?

Who first made this assertion?

What "proof" do they offer in defence of such a claim?

It's repeated often but I haven't been able to track down a source for such a claim, a claim so easily refuted.

Yours in the Lord,

jm

I think they mean that Constantine altered Christianity and, therefore, he may be said to have *created* it in the sense of making it what it became thereafter.

I agree, however, that the claim is without foundation.

Constantine tried to Christianize some pagan rituals which crept into Catholicism.

Other than that, its a utterly false claim.
This is totally untrue, Rubiks.

Actually, it was Julian the Apostate who tried to paganize Christian practices.

Read the book THE APOSTASY THAT WASN"T.

Probably not Constantine but I fear greater influence from the Hillel branch of the Pharisee religion.

There are teachings in the mainstream Christianity that is either common to or strongly influenced by the Pharisee religion and apparently contradicts some of the teachings of Christ.

The Roman Empire tolerated the Pharisees but potentially saw Christianity as a threat.

If the Roman Empire would accept Christianity, there's a chance of strong Pharisee factor.

Observe whenever Jesus warned about anything, it ironically has huge probability of happening and the warning being completely ignored. Jesus warned against the "yeast of the Pharisees".

And if Jesus asked Peter 3x for ther very last time if he loves Him....

Potentially dire implications for our religion. And most Christian's don't even care! :) Too distracted by the world to even notice!

Nero and Domitian couldn't destroy Christianity by persecuting it, but somehow Constantine did without persecution. Interesting claim.
No one, not even Constantine, can destroy Christianity; it will be folded up pretty soon though.

True, though.
Just like Balak and Balaam in the book of Numbers chapter 22.

Satan can never destroy the church by force, but he can with subterfuge by false teachers and force prophets. It didn't start with Constantine, but in new testamenmt times. It is still continuing today with false teachers and pseudo Christian cults.

Sounds like a related but more extreme position than the "Constantine corrupted Christianity" myth. All it takes to debunk this is to point to the manuscripts of the gospels or something like St. Justin's apologetics (which both date prior to Constantine's time).

They're both myths.

Obviously, I would say, it cannot mean that Constantine invented Christianity. The claim (whether true or false) has to mean that he altered it.

There are a few crackpots out there (when I google searched the thread title revealed) that would claim that Constantine 'invented' Christianity at the Council of Nicea.
Yes it's nuts but it does exist.

Jesus says the gates of hell will not prevail against His church.

And His sheep will not follow another.

Jesus warned against the "yeast of the Pharisees".
I think this mainly means hypocrisy. For me, this is a warning against how I myself can welcome excuses to look down on other people > so, when people do their outward things, I need to not give in to the temptation to look down on them.

he altered it.
Various people have changed outward sorts of culture which was thought to be Christianity. But Jesus says the kingdom of God does not come with observation, but God's kingdom lives within us. And you can't change God. Altar, yes, but not alter

As though there never was a St. Paul, never any Christians in catacombs, etc.?

Are you sure that they weren't using the word created or invented to mean "as we know it?"
