When I first started I wanted to use beads because I've made beaded jewelry and could easily make up any kind of prayer rope I wanted for minimal cost. I made one, and then mentioned to my SF. He said in no uncertain terms - No! He was willing to buy a traditional knotted one for me, but a friend kindly made me one.

I had the one I'd made hung in my car for a day or two. This never happened any other time with anything I'd made like that, but the cording just burst on that one and beads flew everywhere. There are probably still a few rolling around in the recesses of my car. Guess there was no way I was going to use that prayer rope if I ever got it in my mind to do so. ;)

oh a prayer rope is definitely preferable.

And if you can't feel it ?

you always make the best with what you can do. in general, the prayer rope is preferable because each knot is 9 crosses folded on itself, and you pray as you weave them together.

this is my favourite - my 'mini lestovka' and as you can see it is small - but I can use it without any problem.

Fr Matt - with deference - if I can't feel a prayer rope it's far better for me to use something I can feel and USE it. I know how prayer ropes are made - but again I can't make them

of course, I don't dispute that. I said you make the best with what you can do. if you cannot feel a rope but can feel beads or a lestovka, that's what you should use.

Yeah I have at times on one or two of my ropes been unable to distinguish some of the knots or I think there's a division where there isn't. I might pray 32 or 35 repetitions when I was aiming for 33 ... but mostly it works.

I didn't intend disobedience per se, but once I found myself with a little beaded bracelet and no prayer rope, but I wanted to "drive" the prayer, so I tried it. It's much easier to feel, even with smaller beads than the knots I'm used to (plus these actually slid a bit on the string, making it easier to use). But I try to keep my prayer rope handy.
