I'm not sure that's as true as it once was. The term is an over-used epithet which has lost much of its original meaning and force. Now it just means someone the Christian Right disapproves of. She calls herself a "Democratic Socialist" like Sanders, for whom she worked. She is no more likely than Sanders to advocate assumption of ownership of the means of production by the government

The word socialist is falsely used, even by those claiming to be socialists.

When people say that in the context of liberal-leaning policies with regards to the US, they're actually referring to the Nordic model. They're actually doing themselves a disservice by incorrectly giving themselves a label with such a negative stigma.

Of course, much of that stigma comes from the fact that the American Right has falsely labelled anything left of Milton Friedman as "socialism" in efforts to scare people out of voting for their opposition.

I'm not sure it's fair to compare the vote totals for the general election vs the vote totals for the primaries. Doesn't look like the incumbent even faced a primary in previous election cycles.

I don't see any numbers for previous primaries, but the numbers for the general election are all over the place. 2016's general election only had 2.5x as many voters as did this primary.

But at least since 2012 (as far back as Ballotpedia goes), Republicans have gotten crushed in that district, so the socialist probably has a good shot of winning.

This is the future from the Democrat Party. Already essentially a Socialist party, it will see its congressional delegation made up more and more of 1) candidates whose wins are a result of voting by one's ethnicity first and foremost, and 2) candidates who abandon careful explanations of proposed legislation in favor of simply "promising 'em free everything."

It's a sad situation all right. Especially when you consider that many on the Left think the Right is just as extremist and un-American as the Right thinks the Left is.

...and supporters, admirers, and defenders of the Democrats can be counted upon to immediately run away from the word Socialist every time it is mentioned. It never fails.

Interestingly enough, though, the Democrats themselves don't go out of their way to do so but, on the contrary, are quite up front about the party's orientation these days.

The Nordic model is called social democracy and the parties that espouse this are called social democrats typically.

It's actually a consequence of Lutheran social ethics this sort of political relationship emerged, BTW. Lutherans are less individualistic, and also less moralistic in their mentality towards the poor. Calvinist countries embraced a more laissez-faire capitalist model, generally, and were slower to adopt universal welfare programs. Like Catholics, they considered charity purely an individual activity.
