Greetings all in Christ, our Lord and God. Peace and love be with you always.

I've been reading all of Revelation and have been pressed with the question in my confusion as to whose side is this Abaddon/ Apollyon angel dude? Is he on God's side? Or is he a minion of the Dark One? Many depictions in art shows that he's a demon of some sort but the text says an angel. But as to whom? There are certain angels that rebelled against God in the distant past so could Abaddon be one of them or so? Or is he an angel positioned there by God to be the gate keeper of the Abyss?

I see how easy it would be to be confused over the character of Abaddon/Apollyon in Revelation 9:11. I have always seen him as "a bad un", "a bad one". That should help you remember which he is, if this is correct that he is an evil angel over this "army" loosed from the bottomless pit. It is hard to tell, and maybe therefore, not important for us to know this particular detail, if Abaddon may in fact be a good angel that has the duty to be "the jailor of the bottomless pit" if you will. What we do know is that God is over all, and that the release of this army is under God's direction to bring some judgment upon the wicked of the earth during the time of the Great Tribulation. You can probably find scholars to build a case either way as to the character of Abaddon, and should just recognize that these scholars exist, and not be dogmatic about this particular point.

According to Catholic Encyclopedia:

A Hebrew word signifying:

  • ruin, destruction ( Job 31:12 );
  • place of destruction; the Abyss, realm of the dead ( Job 26:6 ; Proverbs 15:11 );
  • it occurs personified ( Apocalypse 9:11 ) as Abaddon and is rendered in Greek by Apollyon , denoting the angel-prince of hell, the minister of death and author of havoc on earth. The Vulgate renders the Greek Apollyon by the Latin Exterminans (that is, "Destroyer"). The identity of Abaddon with Asmodeus, the demon of impurity, has been asserted, but not proved.

He is not on God's side - He is the fallen angel and demonic enemy that lands in the lake of fire
  • REVELATION 11:7 When they [the two witnesses] have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the Abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them.
  • REVELATION 17:8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is to ascend from the bottomless pit and go to perdition . .
  • Rev 9:7-These locusts looked like horses armoured for battle; they had what looked like gold crowns on their heads, and their faces looked human, and their hair was like women's hair, and teeth like lion's teeth. They had body-armour like iron breastplates, and the noise of their wings sounded like the racket of chariots with many horses charging. Their tails were like scorpions' tails, with stings, and with their tails they were able to torture people for five months. As their leader they had their emperor, the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek Apollyon.
  • Abaddon - Wikipedia
Commentary:
angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek Apollyon.
Abaddon--that is, perdition or destruction ( Job 26:6 Pro 27:20 ). The locusts are supernatural instruments in the hands of Satan to torment, and yet not kill, the ungodly, under this fifth trumpet. Just as in the case of godly Job, Satan was allowed to torment with elephantiasis, but not to touch his life. In Rev 9:20, these two woe-trumpets are expressly called "plagues." ANDREAS OF CAESAREA, A.D. 500, held, in his Commentary on Revelation, that the locusts mean evil spirits again permitted to come forth on earth and afflict men with various plagues.

@Azureknight 773 if you're looking for specifically Catholic answers, I might suggest you mention so in your OP. And if that's the case for any of your future threads I would also put "Catholics Only" in the thread title, just to filter out commentary from non-Catholics. Just a suggestion, I think it saves us a lot of time from sifting through heretical ideas when it comes to matters of faith.

You are not alone. There is a LOT of disagreement on this topic. I can only give you my personal opinion.

Abaddon is the Angel of Death. He works for God. He is for example sent by God as the King of the Army of Locusts to bring famine and death. He is also the Angel who binds Satan and throws him into the pit and keeps him there. Does that sound like a demon? Nope.

I see. I've been boggled as there are many interpretations of this guy but I hope this helps.
