Indeed. For similar reasons, people in medieval Europe drank a lot of beer.
I was reading somewhere the people who worked on the Pyramids in Egypt drank a lot of beer. Magellan when he sailed around the world, his sailors drank a lot of alcohol, it preserved the food value of just about everything, it was probably meed in my opinion. Drinking to excess is obviously a serious social issue and I don't want to encourage alcoholism but it's not evil in an of itself.

Neither does water, so no, you're not "starving the system (and brain) of oxygen."

Your scare campaign seems thin on actual facts.

The red blood cells carry oxygen to tissues, and if their numbers decrease too much every organ in the body will eventually be damaged. ''Alcohol is a general toxin that will damage every cell in the body and eventually every organ in the body,'' Dr. Spivak said. Drinking and the resultant lack of oxygen are particularly harmful to pregnant women whose babies could be born small and deformed, he said.

Even moderate drinking can damage the brain, claim researchers.

Moderate alcohol consumption can impair cognitive function, says study, countering suggestions that low levels of drinking can help protect the brain.

Drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol can damage the brain and impair cognitive function over time, researchers have claimed.

While heavy drinking has previously been linked to memory problems and dementia, previous studies have suggested low levels of drinking could help protect the brain. But the new study pushes back against the notion of such benefits.

“We knew that drinking heavily for long periods of time was bad for brain health, but we didn’t know at these levels,” said Anya Topiwala, a clinical lecturer in old age psychiatry at the University of Oxford and co-author of the research.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, researchers from the University of Oxford and University College London, describe how they followed the alcohol intake and cognitive performance of 550 men and women over 30 years from 1985. At the end of the study the team took MRI scans of the participants’ brains.

None of the participants were deemed to have an alcohol dependence, but levels of drinking varied. After excluding 23 participants due to gaps in data or other issues, the team looked at participants’ alcohol intake as well as their performance on various cognitive tasks, as measured at six points over the 30 year period.

The team also looked at the structure of the participants’ brains, as shown by the MRI scan, including the structure of the white matter and the state of the hippocampus – a seahorse-shaped area of the brain associated with memory.

After taking into account a host of other factors including age, sex, social activity and education, the team found that those who reported higher levels of drinking were more often found to have a shrunken hippocampus, with the effect greater for the right side of the brain.

While 35% of those who didn’t drink were found to have shrinkage on the right side of the hippocampus, the figure was 65% for those who drank on average between 14 and 21 units a week, and 77% for those who drank 30 or more units a week.

The structure of white matter was also linked to how much individuals drank. “The big fibre tracts in the brain are cabled like electrical wire and the insulation, if you like, on those wires was of a poorer quality in people who were drinking more,” said Topiwala.

In addition, those who drank more were found to fare worse on a test of lexical fluency. “[That] is where you ask somebody to name as many words as they can within a minute beginning with a certain letter,” said Topiwala. People who drank between seven and 14 units a week were found to have 14% greater reduction in their performance on the task over 30 years, compared to those who drank just one or fewer units a week.

By contrast, no effects were found for other tasks such as word recall or those in which participants were asked to come up with words in a particular category, such as ‘animals.’

Expert reaction to the the study was mixed. While Elizabeth Coulthard, consultant senior lecturer in dementia neurology at the University of Bristol, described the research as robust, she cautioned that as the study was observational, it does not prove that alcohol was causing the damage to the brain.

In addition, the majority of the study’s participants were men, while reports of alcohol consumption are often inaccurate with people underestimating how much they drink – an effect that could have exaggerated the apparent impact of moderate amounts of alcohol.

Dr Doug Brown, director of research and development at Alzheimer’s Society said that the new research did not imply that individuals should necessarily turn teetotal, instead stressing that it was important to stick to recommended guidelines.

In 2016, the Department of Health introduced new alcohol guidelines in the UK, recommending that both men and women drink no more than 14 units of alcohol each week – the equivalent of about six pints of beer or seven 175ml glasses of wine.

“Although this research gives useful insight into the long-term effects that drinking alcohol may have on the brain, it does not show that moderate alcohol intake causes cognitive decline. However, the findings do contradict a common belief that a glass of red wine or champagne a day can protect against damage to the brain,” said Brown.

I am aware of what the Bible says on the subject. The Bible does not say it is sinful to drink fermented wine, but rather that drunkenness is unacceptable to God. Saying that it is sinful to drink fermented wine is reading meaning into the Bible that isn't there. People do the same when it comes to issues concerning wearing jewelry, eating meat, and tithing.

When we read the Bible, we need to do so with common sense. A lot of false beliefs are spread because people haven't put enough thought into things they have read in the Bible.

I am an Abstentionist. While I believe that some Christians can drink soberly and responsibly so as not to make their brother to stumble by their making an open display of their social drinking, I believe it is better to teach that is best to abstain for all believers because following Jesus is not about what we want. It is about picking up our cross and denying ourselves and following Jesus.

No idea, it would be a waste of meat and wine.

It's kind of common knowledge. Alcohol dries things out. The meat would be dried out. If you put a dirty penny in alcohol, it would help to clean it. Now, when you put alcohol in your body, it does not know if it is drying out a piece of dead meat or it trying to dry your insides out. Granted, you have an immune system and a repair system that fights off the effect of alcohol drying out your insides. But why take a mild poison in the first place (even if your body is able to fight off it's harmful effects)?

thank you. Any Juice that was comsumed had to be alcoholic.

It's kind of ironic. Your signature at the bottom of each your posts say:

"March is colon cancer awareness month."

Yet, one of the causes of colon cancer is caused by alcohol.

That was not grape juice, that was fermented wine...and there is no way to "ferment" fruit without developing alcohol.

And because God so conveniently made yeast grow on the skin of the grapes, they being to ferment the moment that you crush them.

The red blood cells carry oxygen to tissues, and if their numbers decrease too much every organ in the body will eventually be damaged.

Drinking alcohol in moderation does not affect the numbers of red blood cells.

Alcoholism Statistics You Need to Know:
  • Alcohol poisoning kills six people every day. Of those, 76 percent are adults ages 35-64, and three of every four people killed by alcohol poisoning are men.
  • The group with the most alcohol poisoning deaths per million people is American Indians/Alaska Natives (49.1 per 1 million).
  • Alcohol-impaired driving accounts for more than 30 percent of all driving fatalities each year.
  • More than 15 million people struggle with an alcohol use disorder in the United States, but less than eight percent of those receive treatment.

Here are 12 great reasons to just give up the bottle for good.

No More Walk of Shame
When you quit drinking you never have to wake up, and wonder “what did I do?”, or “who is this person in my bed?”. Let’s face it, we don’t make the best decisions when drunk.

No More Hangovers
No drinking mean no morning after hangovers. That in itself is worth quitting drinking for.

No More Apologizing for “Drunk You”
Have you ever had to explain, “That wasn’t me – that was drunk me”? Drinking impairs our decision making, and our drunken judgment is usually far from our best.

Save Money
Drinking is expensive, even at home, if you are a heavy drinker. Think of all the other things you could do with that money. Annie Grace comment: Each year students spend $5.5 billion on alcohol, more than they spend on soft drinks, tea, milk, juice, coffee, or books combined!

Healthy Emotional State
Tears when you are drunk still happen for a reason. Alcohol may bring them to the surface, but there is typically something under the surface that brings them out.

Being Sober is More Interesting
Alcohol dulls your senses, and therefore dulls life. Life is so much more interesting when you are at your full mental and physical capacity.

Health
Alcohol has a long list of negative side effects as far as your overall health in concerned. If you are a heavy drinker, you are at risk for obesity, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney failure, and heart disease. Annie Grace Comment: And for some reason it’s not talked about but alcohol is a known carcinogen and drastically increases your risk of dying of cancer.
– Men who drink three or more drinks a day have a 41% higher risk of dying of cancer.
– Women who drink two or more drinks a day have a 20% higher risk of dying of cancer.
– Women who have three drinks a week have a 15% higher risk of breast cancer.
– Experts estimate that the risk of breast cancer goes up another 10% for each additional drink women regularly have each day.

More Ways to Have Fun
You’ll find that when you quit drinking, you enjoy things you never knew you enjoyed. Let’s face it, there are simply some things that you can’t do drunk – like mountain climbing.

You Make Better Friends
When you spend time with drunk people while you are sober, you’ll quickly start to wonder “why do I like this person?” Again, with impaired judgment, you find yourself hanging around people you’d never even think about talking to when you are sober.

No More Legal Troubles
Alcohol leads to a whole variety of legal troubles from drinking and driving and public intoxication, to things like assault and other violent crimes. “Fighting Drunk” is a real thing.

You Look Better
Alcohol produces free radicals in the body and other toxins that accelerate the aging process. Look at someone who has been a drinker for a long time, is that what you want to look like? You Feel Better The main benefit is that without all of those toxins constantly bombarding your system, you’ll feel better overall. Next to quitting smoking, it is one of the healthiest things you can possibly do for yourself.

6 reasons I stopped drinking alcohol:
(An New York Daily News Article):

By Annie Grace.

1. Alcohol is a sneaky devil

I never consciously decided to drink every night. It just happened. And anything that “happens” without my full awareness is concerning.

It means — if I am honest — that I have less control than I thought I did. Less control than I want.

Daily drinking snuck up on me. And when I decided it was time to cut back it was harder than I thought it would be. Which leads me to…

2. Alcohol never satisfies (a.k.a. tolerance)

Here's the kicker: It's only when you have decided to drink less that you realize how much of a grasp alcohol has on you.

You think you can simply reverse the trend of drinking more over the years. It's not that easy.

Alcohol demands alcohol. It wants more, and if you don't satisfy the craving it begins to throw a fit.

It's no fun (and just not worth it) to live a life of counting drinks and feeling like you are missing out. Moderation is a moody b---- who doesn't deserve my time or effort.

3. My health.

Being a non-drinker is the healthiest decision you can make (unless you smoke — if you smoke then quitting smoking is the healthiest).

I told myself that drinking red wine every day had health benefits. When I did the research I was shocked. Not only is that untrue but alcohol was declared an known carcinogen in 1988.

And of course there's common sense: drinking something that makes you feel like s--- the day after is probably bad for you.

4. Life is more fun without the booze.

My drinking self would have thought this completely unbelievable. I would have called B.S., but the truth is I have significantly more fun without booze.

It's amazing how many adults — the vast majority — believe that alcohol is key to having a good time.

I blew this myth out of the water through some self-experimentation and realized the feelings I think I enjoy from alcohol are actually just a placebo effect.

The reality is that alcohol didn't make anything more fun, but since I believed it was key to my enjoyment of life, I was miserable without it.

5. I feel so much better — every single day.

I don't worry about how much I am drinking — ever. That makes every night out (and every morning after) significantly more fun.

I have more money; drinking is expensive. In fact, there has been a 79% increase in the price of booze at restaurants since 1982 — 79%!

I have effortlessly lost weight (empty calories) and enjoy all my mornings. I have more energy, am more focused and get significantly more done without alcohol.

I see now that I unknowingly made myself slightly ill every single day. Yuck!

6. Alcohol made me dumb.

I looked into what alcohol actually does to your brain and not surprisingly, alcohol has the very specific effect of slowing down your brain function.

Your brain synapses are depressed and your senses are unable to transmit information to your brain as quickly as normal.

I tested this. I drank after I'd quit to see exactly how it made me feel. I even recorded the results.

The truth is alcohol makes me dumb. My jokes get worse, my stories become scattered, and my nights become monotonous and unmemorable.

Being a non-drinker is 99% awesome, but one thing that pains me: the constant interrogation as to why I don't partake.

Sometimes I find it funny — I mean, no one is demanding reasons why I don't drink soda.

Other times it's downright rude: No, I am not pregnant, allergic or on medication.

It shows how saturated our society has become; booze is the only drug on earth that you have to justify not taking.

Maybe I've piqued your curiosity about life without alcohol. Here's an idea: try it. See how you feel.

Believe it or not, not everybody who drinks gets drunk.

Yes, I realize that. I used to drink socially and had no problem with getting drunk. I decided to put away alcohol as a promise to my wife because alcohol destroyed her Uncle's life.

But I am glad I put away alcohol (even if I did not have a problem with it and I only drank once or twice a year). Why? Because the heart is deceitful. Hard times can come upon a person and alcohol can be a deadly thing to partake in if things in life are not going your way. But if you made vow to stay away from alcohol and you realize that alcohol is a poison, then you are not going to touch the stuff when life may throw you a curve ball. You won't hit the bottle when life may potentially get hard for you. Life is better without alcohol. It's not needed.

We really don't care.

It is written,

4 "Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil;
6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;"
(1 Corinthians 13:4-6 KJV 2016).

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith," (Galatians 5:22).
