John 7:37-39 If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’
"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink" is from Isaiah 55. His words, "as the Scripture said" referred to that, not by what followed. His words, "from his inner most being will flow rivers of living water" is an explanation of what will happen if one obeys the words of Isaiah.John 7:37-39 If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’
There are hints in the Old Testament that there would be more revelation coming.Isaiah 43:18-20
“Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.
20 The beast of the field will honor Me,
The jackals and the ostriches,
Because I give waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My people, My chosen.
There are many wonderful verses in Isaiah, indeed."If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink" is from Isaiah 55. His words, "as the Scripture said" referred to that, not by what followed. His words, "from his inner most being will flow rivers of living water" is an explanation of what will happen if one obeys the words of Isaiah.
It's as though He were saying, "If you believe in me according to Isaiah, then out of your belly will flow rivers of living water."
John 7:37-39 If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’
Proverbs 18:4. "The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters; the fountain of wisdom like a flowing brook." Deep waters is a reference to underground springs, or "streams."
It's not really a quote of anything. Rather it alludes to themes that exist several different places stitched together. Or possibly it may be a verse in some non-canonical book which is so obscure that the quote isn't google-able.
It simply means, Jesus is our living waters...He gives us life. From Him flows the Holy Spirit.
Is striking the 'rock' a metaphor/allegory referring to Messiah Yeshua's crucifixion before His Spirit can flow like living water from Messianic Jewish Believers? Perhaps, Exodus 17:6 is another plausible Tanakh scripture. However, *the Spirit was not yet [given] to New Covenant Messianic Jewish Believers that would be baptized and empowered with the indwelling presence of His Spirit.
Exodus 17:6
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Is there another scripture(metaphor/allegory) in the first five books of the Torah that's possibly relevant to ... ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ...
John 7:37-38 (his refers to Believers with the indwelling presence of His Spirit)
38 He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.
39 But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believed on Him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; *because Jesus was not yet glorified.
These two verses imply that somewhere in the Tanakh is scripture that refers to future faithful Believers in Israel's Messiah as carriers of living water flowing from their innermost being(His Spirit) like a river.
Are there any scripture(s) in the Psalms that eludes to "his innermost being" as possible due to His Spirit indwelling faithful Followers of Messiah Yeshua.
Verse 39 of your quote from John is debatable in its content and / or doubtful as to its existence in some MSS. That is why in a number of Bibles it is in brackets. If that is held to be true we need to overcome the problems with the verse - this is unlikely.
Why can not His and his be understood both ways. It is only because of YHVH's "living water like a river" that both Israel's Messiah and His faithful followers are empowered with YHVH's Spirit from which flows living water with the source being Father God.
I'm totally lost by your post, especially the first sentence.
Perhaps rereading post #14 would help to see that John 7:39 can be interrupted as referring to both His Spirit indwelling Messiah Yeshua and indwelling his spirit of born again Believers.
John 7:39
But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believed on Him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; because Jesus was not yet glorified.
What don't you get as it makes perfect sense. Are there any scripture(s) in the Psalms that you believe forecasts/prophecies "his innermost being" as referring to His indwelling presence in faithful Followers of Messiah Yeshua. Or do you believe a better reading would be "His innermost being" referring to Messiah Yeshua Himself and not faithful Followers ("his innermost being") of Israel's Messiah.
