Bear in mind that the exact terminology you quote is a translation and may not appear in that exact form of words! Remember also the context of ch. 7 - Yeshua had been teaching in the Temple, the text in question is a part of this account, not separated from it.

I have a reference in a Messianic Bible to John 7:38, dd. 1906. The reference is Zechariah 14:8.

Below is an excerpt from a commentary on that verse (emphasis mine). Although he speaks of the Gospel (which was not available in Yeshua's time), Gill is confident that it applies to scripture and not the Holy Spirit.

©John Gill's Commentary and Exposition of the Bible. 'John Gill was a contemporary of Spurgeon, and worshipped in Spurgeon's Church. His works contain priceless gems of information that are found nowhere except in the ancient writings of the Jews'.

Zechariah 14:8
And it shall be in that day, [that] living waters shall go
out from Jerusalem

When it shall be light; and this is one of the things which will make it so; for by "living waters" are meant the Gospel, and the doctrines of it; compared to running "waters" for the sound of them, which will then go into all the earth; for the swiftness in which they shall proceed; for their rapidity and force in bearing all before them; for the great spread of them; and for their virtue and efficacy in cooling those who are inflamed with the fiery law; refreshing thirsty souls; purifying the hearts and lives of sinners, and making those that are barren fruitful: and to "living" waters, because they are the means of quickening dead sinners, and of reviving drooping saints; and because they serve to support and maintain a spiritual life, and nourish up unto eternal life, and direct the way to it, as well as give the best account of it: and these will come out of Jerusalem; which may design Jerusalem literally, which will be rebuilt at the time of the Jews' conversion; or mystically the church, the spiritual and heavenly Jerusalem; see ( Hebrews 12:22 ) ( Ezekiel 47:1 ) ( Joel 3:18 ) reference seems to be had to the first ministration of the Gospel, which, according to prophecy, came out of Jerusalem, ( Isaiah 2:3 ) .

Half of them towards the former sea;
or the eastern sea, as the Targum, the Persian sea; and may signify that the Gospel shall be carried into the eastern parts of the world, into Persia, Tartary, and China, and other nations; and those great kingdoms shall become the kingdoms of Christ:

and half of them toward the hinder sea;
or the western sea, as the Targum, the Mediterranean Sea; and may denote the progress and success of the Gospel in the European parts of the world: and the meaning of the whole is, that the Gospel shall be carried from east to west, and preached all the world over, to the conversion of Jews and Gentiles, who, some think, are designed by the two seas; when the abundance of the sea shall be converted by it, and the forces and fulness of the Gentiles brought in, and all Israel save.

in summer and in winter shall it be;
there will be no summer of persecution, nor winter of coldness and indifference to hinder the ministry of the word: the phrase denotes the constant ministry of the word, and the duration of it; it shall be constantly preached all the year long, and as long as summer and winter last.

He is teaching a summation of what the Tanach teaches. You won't find those words explicitly in the Tanach

Another example is, you won't find the explicit words "the Messiah will be killed and resurrected on the 3rd day and will ascend to heaven".

The Tanach teaches this, it just doesn't say it word for word in 1 single spot.

John 7:37-39 If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’
"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink" is from Isaiah 55. His words, "as the Scripture said" referred to that, not by what followed. His words, "from his inner most being will flow rivers of living water" is an explanation of what will happen if one obeys the words of Isaiah.
It's as though He were saying, "If you believe in me according to Isaiah, then out of your belly will flow rivers of living water."

There are hints in the Old Testament that there would be more revelation coming. :)

There are many wonderful verses in Isaiah, indeed.

Btw, Jesus used the same teaching with the woman at the well, using the literal waters of the well of Jacob to compare them to the wisdom He could offer; a spring of living water providing eternal life.

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)

It's not really a quote of anything. Rather it alludes to themes that exist several different places stitched together. Or possibly it may be a verse in some non-canonical book which is so obscure that the quote isn't google-able.

Is striking the 'rock' a metaphor/allegory referring to Messiah Yeshua's crucifixion before His Spirit can flow like living water from Messianic Jewish Believers? Perhaps, Exodus 17:6 is another plausible Tanakh scripture. However, *the Spirit was not yet [given] to New Covenant Messianic Jewish Believers that would be baptized and empowered with the indwelling presence of His Spirit.

Exodus 17:6
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Is there another scripture(metaphor/allegory) in the first five books of the Torah that's possibly relevant to ... ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ...

John 7:38-39 (his refers to Believers with the indwelling presence of His Spirit)
38 He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.
39 But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believed on Him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; *because Jesus was not yet glorified.

These two verses imply that somewhere in the Tanakh is scripture that refers to future faithful Believers in Israel's Messiah as carriers of living water flowing from their innermost being(His Spirit) like a river.

Are there any scripture(s) in the Psalms that eludes to "his innermost being" as possible due to His Spirit indwelling faithful Followers of Messiah Yeshua.

It simply means, Jesus is our living waters...He gives us life. From Him flows the Holy Spirit.

:clap:

As has already been mentioned on this thread: 1) The actual words in the OP cannot be traced - they may be someones translation of a verse, but which, and whose, we know not. 2) Verse 39 of your quote from John is debatable in its content and / or doubtful as to its existence in some MSS. That is why in a number of Bibles it is in brackets. If that is held to be true we need to overcome the problems with the verse - this is unlikely.

The Exodus reading is, undoubtedly, a miracle. Miracles occurred in the Tanach as well as in the Christian Testament. We must be careful not to Christianise that reading, or other parts of the Tanach, as it can easily become a case of stretching scripture to breaking point.

Not every mention of water in the Bible is a metaphor for the Law - the context provides a useful guide.

Why can not His and his be understood both ways. It is only because of YHVH's "living water like a river" that both Israel's Messiah and His faithful followers are empowered with YHVH's Spirit from which flows living water with the source being Father God.

John 7:39 is Right-On whichever way it is interrupted

I'm totally lost by your post, especially the first sentence. :)

Perhaps rereading post #14 would help to see that John 7:39 can be interrupted as referring to both His Spirit indwelling Messiah Yeshua and indwelling his spirit of born again Believers.

John 7:39
But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believed on Him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; because Jesus was not yet glorified.

What don't you get as it makes perfect sense. Are there any scripture(s) in the Psalms that you believe forecasts/prophecies "his innermost being" as referring to His indwelling presence in faithful Followers of Messiah Yeshua. Or do you believe a better reading would be "His innermost being" referring to Messiah Yeshua Himself and not faithful Followers ("his innermost being") of Israel's Messiah.

Simply because verse 39 is NOT there, as we see it, in many MSS, and it is out of context with the texts surrounding it in Ch. 7 & 8

I still do not understand your His / his comment!

By the way - the OP specifically excludes the Christian Testament - the question we are meant to be tackling is apart from that Testament. There is another thread that is dealing with the CT version. :)
