Witnessing at work

Hello Friends,

I need some advice on witnessing at work, and even more specifically, to those who say they, at one point in time, say they accepted Jesus, but now live according to the flesh.

Being surrounded daily with cursing and perverse speech takes a toll, especially being that I once stood in their position, and find myself stumbling in thought and having to call upon the Lord every moment of my day. I battle internally with my compassion for their souls and my bitterness towards their sin, and find it hard to exhort them. They use the Lords name in vain continually, and sometimes I feel as if I should only just ignore them, yet intercede for them in my prayers.

Anyone facing the same things? I want the world to know of the Love of Jesus Christ, but how do you evangelize to people who know they’re unclean spiritually but just don’t consider it worth anything to them to live godly?

If someone identifies as a Christian, ignore the speech and pray for them. If someone identifies as a non-Christian, try to witness briefly to them at lunch or on a break. Or perhaps share a Christian book with the person. Don't put pressure on yourself though. God bless.

Your life is the greatest witness. Let your light shine that men may see your good works and glorify the Father. When your like if bight enough....all darkness has to flee. When I see darkness I work on the source of the light.

The Lord has His own way of leading people to be witnessed to. He'll create the opportunities. Don't worry about it and keep living your life for Him. God bless .

He calls us to preach the gospel to the whole earth. Presenting ourselves as living sacrifices. It’s always my goal to profess the name of the Lord to people in my work place at least once a day, that they might know the kingdom is at hand. Thanks everyone for your kind responses!

Um... So my view is that you shouldn't evangelize at work. First, most people don't want to be preached at while at work. They have to be there, so you are taking advantage of a captive audience. People generally don't like that.

Go on a street corner, or somewhere else, where people can choose to listen if they want to, and you'll get more favorable results.

Second, you can actually do more damage to the name of Christ, if you stop working to witness to people. Because to non-christians, you look like you are just using your faith, to milk the clock.

My advice to you, would be to live out your life as best as you possibly can. Ignore the pagans. Learn to let go of their speech. I have co-workers that I care about deeply, and I too shutter when they talk badly.

But I remember, that's not my place. My place is to show care, and be a friend, and be a good worker.

When they ask me why I do what I do, I tell them. I am a Christian. Sometimes that opens a door to talking about my faith, and most of the time it does not. But that is a better system, than randomly evangelizing co-workers.

I think you’re missing the point. I do not simply walk up and tell them they should know Jesus, but I do talk to them and listen to their hearts, and if they need a word from the Lord, one should not withhold it.

My struggle is not that I witness instead of working, but when people blaspheme His name, I want to let them be aware of their offense, with gentleness of course. This is where I struggle, because Christ calls us to preach and be his witnesses, without exception.

Do you not have sorrow for the lost souls that walk passed you every day?

How is it that they blaspheme his name? Everyone unknowingly, uses His name in vain....pagan and Christian alike.....but this is because we dont know His name and therefore rarely use it with intention....... God is not a name.

I can understand your frustration, Kyle. I believe that while we may not have control over the people and environment we live in or work at, all we have to do is choose to live a life full of Godly character in speech and action. Let God do the changing of hearts. Sending prayers for you, asking the Lord to grant you wisdom and make you sensitive to the leading of His Spirit in this and every area of your life.

Lots of Christians have gotten this idea that they are duty bound to go around witnessing to everyone as much as they can. No, the Bible does say that we are to witness to the world, but not to everyone in it. In fact Messiah told us NOT to toss our pearls (of spiritual wisdom) to the dogs or to the swine. Further in Proverbs we are told to be discrete in evil times. These are evil times

How do you know which people, who seem like oinkers and arfers, are maybe going to be saved some day? You usually don't. The Holy Spirit knows and if you pray to know, and what to do when you know, that is your best course. Not all people are going to be saved. In fact, very sadly, Messiah also said that most would take the broad path to destruction.

If they cuss and fuss, just pray for them and yourself. Pray for peace. Let them live their lives while you live yours.
Or, if the atmosphere becomes too oppressive, pray to find a better job elsewhere.

What God said to me was to just let the light of the Lord be seen. In other words, just continue to love them and let His love show through you. It may be that you may have opportunity to witness at the appropriate time. God will lead them to you and you to them and you will be there with the right words spoken at the right time that will have a major influence in their life. Don't look at their sin, but look at their heart. Do you realize that Jesus hung out with the sinners? I am sure He heard cursing and such and yet that was exactly where He chose to be and the Pharisees criticized Him for it. Here is the scripture...
Matthew 9:9-13 9And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. 10And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

When I was around people like that I would engage in conversation with them but when they started cussing, or gossiping or anything that was offensive to my Christian beliefs I would hold my tongue and pray for them. Time and time again, one or another would ask to speak to me privately and share some situation they were going through and ask my opinion or for prayer. That's when the door would open up to minister to them. One by one as lead by the Holy Spirit I would pray and lead some to Christ.

Have compassion and mercy on them and just pray for opportunity to be a witness. That's a ministry in itself to make a difference in someone's life in the workplace.

You want them to know that they've offended you, or that they've offended God? When you write about the "toll" of "cursing and perverse speech," and your "bitterness" toward these people, it sounds like you consider yourself the offended party. If that's the case, I suggest you ignore it. You cannot expect other people to share your piety, especially in public settings. And unless they are violating company policy, they are well within their rights to blaspheme God, Buddha, L. Ron Hubbard, or anyone else they choose. If it's really affecting your work and/or wellbeing, talk to your supervisor or HR about it.
