However the travel time of the missile is minutes to detonation from a no-warning launch. The F-35, even if on "manned strip alert" would take several minutes to launch, and it would have to already be within the vicinity of the missile's flight path (which itself would take several minutes to determine).

Essentially, F-35 aircraft would have to be on continuously manned strip alert at bases all along the western coast.
