In John 14:15 Jesus says "If you love me you will keep my commandments" what exactly did Jesus mean by this? What are the commandments of Jesus? Are they the two commandments he gave at the last supper? To love God with all your heart soul and mind and to love others as Jesus loved you? It seems there's more than just to love God because Jesus would have said something like if you love me you will love others as well as me. John says in 1 john that Jesus's commandments were to believe in Jesus and to love others. So are those the commandments Jesus was talking about in John 14:15?
In John 14:15 Jesus says "If you love me you will keep my commandments" what exactly did Jesus mean by this? --- That those who love Him will listen to His words, take them in, and hear them, and begin doing what He said to do. (John chapters 14 and 15)
Some of the commandments He said to us (and a believer will want to look each one up and read through fully all the surrounding verses) --
"Love one another as I have loved you"
"Forgive.....seventy times seven" (or in some translations seventy seven times, but meaning simply again and again)
"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment."
"And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."
"love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"
These are some of the most emphasized commands He gave us, but a believer will want to learn
all He said, such as the instructions He gave us on how to pray the right way, so that our prayer is heard, and so many other invaluable things that totally surprise and delight us, waiting for us to simply read and listen and hear.
The commands are not optional -- because if we put them aside without doing them, then He said we will be destroyed! (Matthew 7:24-27 and several other places)
But if we do the commands He gave us, we are on the rock and will endure and make it. Hallelujah.
