What is the purpose of the thousand-year reign of Christ?

The Millennium (also known as the Millennial Kingdom) is the 1,000-year reign of Jesus after the Tribulation and before all the people of the world are sent to either heaven or hell. Jesus will reign as king over Israel as well as all the nations of the world (Isaiah 2:4; 42:1). The world will live in peace (Isaiah 11:6–9; 32:18), Satan will be bound (Revelation 20:1–3), and, at the beginning, everyone will worship God (Isaiah 2:2–3). The purpose of the 1,000-year reign is to fulfill promises God made to the world that cannot be fulfilled while Satan is free and humans have political authority. Some of these promises, called covenants, were given specifically to Israel. Others were given to Jesus, the nations of the world, and creation. All of these will be fulfilled during Jesus’ 1,000-year reign.

The Palestinian Covenant, also called the Land Covenant (Deuteronomy 30:1-10)
God has already fulfilled the personal aspects of the Abrahamic Covenant; Abraham did go to the Promised Land, he did have many descendants, and he is the forefather of many nations. Several hundred years after Abraham, Joshua led the Israelites to claim ownership of the Promised Land. But Israel has never possessed the specific boundaries that God promised in Genesis 15:18–20 and Numbers 34:1-12. Not even Solomon ruled over this particular area (1 Kings 4:21–24). Although he did reign from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates, he did not hold the area from Mount Hor to Hazarenan (Numbers 34:7–9)—into present-day Lebanon and Syria. In addition, the covenant God made with Abraham was that he and his descendants would have the land for eternity (Genesis 13:15; 17:8; Ezekiel 16:60). The current Israeli state may be a step in this direction, but they still do not possess the boundaries God laid out.

The Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7)
God’s covenant with David was that his line would never die out and that David’s heir would sit on the throne of Israel forever (2 Samuel 7:16). Biblical scholars agree that Jesus is the fulfillment of this covenant—one of the reasons His genealogy is given for both His step-father (Matthew 1:1–17) and His mother (Luke 3:23–38). The Jews understood this when they laid down palm branches and their cloaks as Jesus rode into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–17). They expected Him to be a military/political leader that would liberate them from the Romans and make Israel a great nation again. But they didn’t understand the nature of Jesus’ work at the time was for the New Covenant, not the Davidic Covenant. The 1,000-year reign will be the beginning of Jesus’ eternal reign over Israel and the earth (Revelation 20:4, 6).

The New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
The work of the New Covenant—Jesus’ death and resurrection to reconcile hearts to God—has been accomplished. But we have not yet seen the complete fulfillment. Jeremiah 31:33 says, “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Ezekiel 36:28 gives more specifics: “You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.” Isaiah 59:20–21 explains that this covenant is possible because of the Redeemer, and the reconciliation He provides will last forever. This covenant does not mean that every Jew will be saved. But it does mean that Israel as a nation will worship their Messiah. The Old Testament prophets who spoke of this covenant, including Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, and Ezekiel, all wrote that it will be fulfilled in the future. From their time on, Israel has yet to be an independent nation that worshiped its Messiah (Romans 9—11). They will be in the 1,000-year reign of Christ.

Other Promises
Those are the covenants God made with Israel that are to be fulfilled in Jesus’ 1,000-year reign, but the Bible lists other promises that will be fulfilled, too. God promised Jesus He will make His enemies a footstool, and that Jesus’ followers will worship Him freely (Psalm 100). God promised the nations of the world that they would live in peace with Jesus as their ruler (Daniel 7:11–14). And He promised creation that the curse would be lifted (Romans 8:18–23), animals and the earth would be restored to peace and prosperity (Isaiah 11:6–9; 32:13–15), and people would be freed from disease (Ezekiel 34:16). These, too, will be fulfilled during the 1,000-year reign.

The main purpose of Jesus’ 1,000-year reign is to fulfill the prophecies given to Israel and the promises made to Jesus, the nations, and the whole earth. God’s covenants were voluntary and one-sided. He promised He would bless Israel and restore the world in specific ways, and He will.

God needs to know whether people being given all prosperity and abundancy in Christ government will obey Him or finally rebell like Adam and Eve in the abundancy of the Garden of Eden.

Thats why the devil will be released again at the end of 1000 years Millennium.

Apparently, someone cut Hebrews 8:6-13 out Dr. Pentecost's Bible, before he received it.

It contains the exact text from Jeremiah 31:31-34, fulfilled by Christ during the first century.

Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant announced by Christ at the Last Supper in Matthew 26:28 Dr. Pentecost's Two Peoples of God doctrine falls apart and shows his book "Things to Come" to be filled with error.
Maybe this is the reason Dr. Pentecost ignored Hebrews 8:6-13 in the article above.

What about Ezekiel 36:28 then?

Ezekiel 36:28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

How can one possibly spiritualize this verse? Doesn't the verse say---And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers? What land was that? What land did He give to their fathers, and are they dwelling in this same land as we speak?

The purpose of the thousand years is to allow enough time for God to build his kingdom, which is made up of people. It takes time for people to be born. God wants lots of people because we are his inheritance. At the end of the thousand years, Jesus will hand the kingdom (the people) over to God the father.

What land did He give to their fathers, and are they dwelling in this same land as we speak?

Who are "they"?

1Jn 2:22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.
1Jn 2:23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

1Ti_1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

Tit_3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Mat 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
Mat 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
Mat 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
Mat 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
Mat 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
Mat 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Mat 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Mat 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

That piece of land in the Middle East does not belong to those who reject the "chief cornerstone".

He is "heir" to the land.

I fully agree that land does not belong to the Jews that reject the chief cornerstone. Still doesn't make the prophecy already fulfilled somehow spiritually though.

That leaves us with at least two choices.

The land belongs to us, since we are Abraham's seed and inherit the promise as found in Galatians 3:16-29.

or

At some point in time a spiritual promise becomes a physical reality.
There is no doubt in my mind that heaven is a real place.

How many Covenants/Testaments is your Bible divided into?

Mine shows just two, Old and New.

Betcha yours does too.

In God's New Will and Testament, all promises are fulfilled in Christ.

The OT promises are the promissory clauses of God's Old Will and Testament, and they are both revoked and fulfilled in the promissory clauses of His New Will and Testament, written in the Blood of His Son Jesus Christ, the Divine Testator.

If you have made your own Will and Testament, you will see that the very first clause states the following, or its equivalent:

"I HEREBY REVOKE all former Wills and other testamentary dispositions by me at any time therefore made and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament."

This means that all former wills and testaments, and all of their promissory clauses, are completely null and void. In their place, the promissory clauses of the current last new will and testament are the only ones in force and effect. Any promissory clause which appeared in the old will and testament, but does not appear in the new will and testament, is irrevocably null and void unless another new will and testament is made which re-includes it.

We see the new promissory clauses of God's New Will and Testament in:

Matthew 21:33-45
In this parable, the son, who is identified as the heir, typifies Christ.

Galatians 3:16
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:20
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

Hebrews 1:1,2
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

and other scriptures. In them, we see that the Heir and Beneficiary is Christ alone, that all of the promises are affirmed and confirmed in Him, and that He is Heir of all things. All includes the OT land promises, the restoration promises, the blessings promises, and all else. There are no exceptions.

Additional promissory clauses in:

Romans 8:16-17
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Galatians 3:29
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

make us who are in Christ joint heirs with Him.

But there are no promissory clauses for anyone who is not in Christ.

God already knows how it will turn out, and He has already told us how it will turn out. But God wants to display, in full view of the entire universe, what He is demonstrating in every one of the seven Dispensations. That Mankind will fail under any conceivable circumstance. This simply proves that the only solution is grace.

The thousand year reign of Christ is when He establishes His Kingdom on Earth. The Lord will establish everlasting righteousness (Daniel 9:24).

The prophecy found in Mathew 6:10, will be fulfilled during the thousand year reign of Christ; thy Kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

The Thousand Year Reign of Christ, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Isaiah 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

Psalms 37:6-13

  • The Lord God shall bring forth righteousness as the light, and judgment...
  • Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him
  • Do not fret because of those who accomplish wickedness
  • Cease from anger, and forsake wrath and evil
  • For the evildoers will be cut off
  • But those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth
  • The meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight in great peace
  • The wicked plotteth against the just
  • Adonai laughs at the wicked: for he sees their day is coming.
The use of the word Lord, in reference to Jesus, as Adonai, is used just once in Psalms 37. He scornfully laughs at those that do not know of their demise that will come like a whirlwind.

Adonai does not sit at the right hand of God, He is the right hand or power of God. He will shatter the power of the kings of the earth, during the day of his wrath, and His Thousand Year Reign will begin (Psalms 110:5).

Isaiah 11:6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

The wicked, who are corrupters will be removed from Yahshua's holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:9).

Isaiah 11:11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord (Adonai) shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

At the onset of the thousand year reign of Christ, our Messiah will swallow up death in victory. Our Lord Adonai will wipe away the tears of His people. Their sorrow and mourning will be replaced gladness and joy (Isa 51:11).

Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation

And it shall be said in that day, this is our God (Elohim) we have waited for our Savior; this is the Lord (Jehovah) whom we have waited for; we will be glad and rejoice in Yahshua (Jesus).

To fully understand the true interpretation of Isaiah 25:9, we need to comprehend that there is but one God who was manifest in the flesh.

Jer 32:17 Ah Lord (Adonai) GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

The Thousand Year Reign of Christ and the restoration
There are several Bible verses that seem to describe the complete annihilation of planet earth at the end of this age. Although there will be significant destruction that occurs during the end of this age, the earth is not completely destroyed. Christ will return to restore and rebuild His Kingdom. Would the Lord God that Created all things, desire the second gathering of Israel to inherit destruction?

2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

The judgment is primarily against the ungodly men, who are the workers of iniquity. The earth (or land) and the works that are therein shall be burnt up, but we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness (2 Peter 3:10-13). We must not forget Christ's promise to the Elect that His Kingdom will be established on earth.

Matt 13:39-40 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

As it was in the days of Lot and Noah, so shall it also be when Christ returns. He will destroy all of the wicked. The ones that are left behind are considered righteous and faithful, and they represent the second gathering of Israel. Those that are taken represent the workers of iniquity.

The pre-tribulation rapture deception most assuredly is not something that Christ ever alluded to. At the end of the Great Tribulation period, which is three and a half years in duration, the rapture or gathering of the Elect unto Christ will occur (Luke 17:26-37). This Rapture unto the Lord is when the Elect will reign with the Lord on earth for 1000 years.

Isaiah 65:17-18 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.

The gathering of Israel will involve a new creation by the Lord. The people will build houses, and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of thereof.

In the second creation, after the thousand year reign of Christ, the Lord provides His people with a complete city already built for them called the New Jerusalem (Isaiah 65:21-22; Rev 21:10-23).

The curse has devoured the earth (or land), and they that dwell therein are desolate, therefore the inhabitants of the earth are melted (or burnt like kindling), and there are few men left (Isaiah 24:6). However Christ will bring about the promised gathering of Israel, and the righteous shall shine as the sun (Mat 13:43). The Lord will Reign in Mount Zion, which is in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 24:23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

Look up to the heavens, and look upon the earth below, for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth will become old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner...(Isaiah 51:6).

The true gathering of Israel, will not be a temporary time of Joy, it will be unto everlasting life with Yahshua (Jesus).

Isaiah 51:11 Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

The Redeemed of the Lord represents the second gathering of Israel unto Redemption which is the promise of Salvation and the eternal inheritance with Jesus.

The Thousand Year Reign of Christ- the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
God who in the past spoke to us through His prophets, has in these last days spoken unto us by his Son. During the Thousand Year Reign of Christ, He who is appointed as heir of all things will also be recognized as the one who made all things (Heb 1:1-2).

Isaiah 11:9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

The Thousand Year Reign of Christ is a literal event that occurs upon this present earth with the existing heavens and seas, although there will be many changes that occur. There are only two complete creation events, and a restoration of the first creation is necessary to repair the damage done to what once was a beautiful planet.

In the first creation, God created the heavens and the earth (Gen 1:1). Mankind can choose evil or righteousness during this time period.

After the Thousand Year Reign of Christ occurs the existing Heaven and Earth will fade away. Then shall the New Jerusalem that Jesus prepared for His children be revealed. This final and eternal destination is reserved for His Elect. The righteous will enter into a timeless, sinless and eternal fellowship with the Lord God.

There are many unique features of this second creation, that are very different from that of the first.

  • There is no more sea (Rev 21:1).
  • The first heaven and earth are replaced by the second after the millennial reign of Christ, and the New Jerusalem descends from Heaven (Rev 21:2).
  • There is no longer a sun nor a moon (Rev 21:23).
  • There is no longer night or darkness (Rev 21:25).
  • The only ones who occupy New Jerusalem are those whose names are written in the Lambs Book of Life (Rev 21:27).
  • There shall be no more curse (Rev 22:3).
  • The righteous shall have access to the Tree of Life (Rev 22:2).
During the Thousand Year Reign of Christ, there are several characteristics that show that this creation of a new heaven and earth (or land), is a restoration of the first creation, and not the second creation.

  • We look forward to a new heaven and earth where Christ will bring in everlasting righteousness (2 Peter 3:13; Dan 9:24).
  • There are seas during this time period, but the second earth has the River of the Water of Life (Rev 20:13; Rev 21:1; Rev 22:1, 2, 17).
  • There still are tears shed, sorrow to be had, and death still occurs (Rev 21:4; Isa 65:20).
  • This time is an answer to our prayer: thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven (Mathew 6:10).
  • The Elect will receive a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to all that love his appearing (2 Tim 4:8).
  • There are still seasons (Zec 14:8).
  • The remnant of the nations that came against Jerusalem will come to worship Christ in Jerusalem (Zec 14:16-17).
  • Not all reign with Christ and those that disobey will be punished ( Zec 14:17-19).
  • Those of the nations will learn the ways of the Lord (Isa 2:2-3).
  • During the Thousand Year Reign of Christ, those who were slain for the Word of Christ live and reign with Him (Rev 20:4). This is the promised inheritance that the Elect who are Sealed with the Holy Spirit receive at His coming (Eph 1:13; Eph 3:6; 1 John 2:25).
Gal 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The great flood was necessary to remove all things that were an offense to God. Likewise, at the Thousand Year Reign of Christ, the new heavens and earth that Christ creates at His second coming are cleansed of iniquity and all things that offend.

Matt 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity

The Thousand Year Reign of Christ is a time for the Redeemed that will Inherit Zion. The Elect who are also God's chosen ones will take part in the true second gathering of the Israel of God.

Your teaching is in error, at the return of Jesus Christ this existing heaven and earth are dissolved by his fire in judgment, there will be no mortal humans left. 2 Peter 3:10-13,2 Thessalonians 1:7-8, Luke 17:29-30, Malachi 3:2, Nahum 1:5, Isaiah 24:20, 1 Corinthians 3:13

The chapters you quote, Isaiah 11 is the eternal kingdom, New Heaven, Earth, Jerusalem, where the Lamb and Lion lay together, also seen in Isaiah 65:17-19, Revelation 21:1-5

Zechariah 14 the eternal kingdom, verses 6-7 eternal light, verse 8 the river of life, verse 12 the Lords return in firey judgment. Revelation 22:1-5

Jesus will not return to earth and take a throne in Jerusalem, and hang out with mortal humans.

Jesus warned the believers against this teaching, Matthew 24:23-27

You have stated this repeatedly. But you have not posted even one scripture that says this.

There will be no future 1000 year kingdom on earth as you claim, your teaching misrepresents the "Eternal Kingdom"

Come on now this is getting tiresome for me!

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

Rev 20:4-9 (KJV)

You have stated this repeatedly. But you have not posted even one scripture that says this.

1Th 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
1Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
1Th 5:1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
1Th 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
1Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
1Th 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
1Th 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
1Th 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
1Th 5:7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
1Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
1Th 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
1Th 5:10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2Pe 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
Rev 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
