Jesus asked "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?"
The only measure of real success pertains to the status of the soul.
2 Corinthians 4:18
while we look not at the things which are seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
1 Timothy 4:7-8
On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
A double dose of success is obtained in a disciplined pursuit of godliness that will profit in both physical and spiritual life both now and in the life to come. Success therefore can be defined according to how much godliness is attain during life here on earth. According to God success is to have that goal in front: the achievement of godliness.
To be a disciple means to be disciplined to the attaining of this goal like an athlete disciplines herself/himself or someone with academic goals has toward the achievement of their goals by living and breathing the process, keeping it always foremost in mind.
How can the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be richly furnished unto you?
2 Peter 1:11
Peter calls himself a bond-servant of Christ, one who willingly has given himself to the service of another. Peter's freedom to do so was because of the purchase by blood and his service to Christ was to those who have received faith, those to whom peace and grace have been multiplied in the knowledge of the Father and the Son.
Peter's ladder of success led from one virtue to the next beginning with faith and displayed in moral standards with self-control as a means. Perseverance in godliness is keeping the eyes fixed on Jesus in all things. That practical awareness means that all thoughts are brought captive to Christ in constant prayer. It's reckoning Him as a part of everyday life because His are one with Him. Showing forth undeserved love because He loved first and turned the enemy into a friend of God. Fruit from this tree can only increase as the sinful nature decreases. Stumbling on the different steps can be halted. Stop the sinful behavior, start again by picking things up at the cross, and keeping Jesus in view on the walk forward. Constant vigilance. Closing the eye to Christ just means following some other blind beggar away from the entrance into peace and grace.
2 Corinthians 10:15
not boasting out of measure in other people's labours, but having hope, your faith increasing, to be enlarged amongst you, according to our rule, yet more abundantly
2 John 1:9:
Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
Now the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly: and your whole spirit, and soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
