Jesus asked "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?"

The only measure of real success pertains to the status of the soul.

2 Corinthians 4:18
while we look not at the things which are seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

1 Timothy 4:7-8
On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

A double dose of success is obtained in a disciplined pursuit of godliness that will profit in both physical and spiritual life both now and in the life to come. Success therefore can be defined according to how much godliness is attain during life here on earth. According to God success is to have that goal in front: the achievement of godliness.
To be a disciple means to be disciplined to the attaining of this goal like an athlete disciplines herself/himself or someone with academic goals has toward the achievement of their goals by living and breathing the process, keeping it always foremost in mind.

How can the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be richly furnished unto you?
2 Peter 1:11

Peter calls himself a bond-servant of Christ, one who willingly has given himself to the service of another. Peter's freedom to do so was because of the purchase by blood and his service to Christ was to those who have received faith, those to whom peace and grace have been multiplied in the knowledge of the Father and the Son.

Peter's ladder of success led from one virtue to the next beginning with faith and displayed in moral standards with self-control as a means. Perseverance in godliness is keeping the eyes fixed on Jesus in all things. That practical awareness means that all thoughts are brought captive to Christ in constant prayer. It's reckoning Him as a part of everyday life because His are one with Him. Showing forth undeserved love because He loved first and turned the enemy into a friend of God. Fruit from this tree can only increase as the sinful nature decreases. Stumbling on the different steps can be halted. Stop the sinful behavior, start again by picking things up at the cross, and keeping Jesus in view on the walk forward. Constant vigilance. Closing the eye to Christ just means following some other blind beggar away from the entrance into peace and grace.

2 Corinthians 10:15
not boasting out of measure in other people's labours, but having hope, your faith increasing, to be enlarged amongst you, according to our rule, yet more abundantly

2 John 1:9:
Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.

1 Thessalonians 5:23
Now the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly: and your whole spirit, and soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The 8 virtues 2 Peter 1:1-11

Dividing soul and spirit .... what that means to me is that the soul is the container and the spirit is that which fills it. Seeking the attainment of holiness in the right gospel order is after union with Christ! It's going to Christ with a thirsty appetite to drink of the living water of the Spirit. Psalms 143:10, Jeremiah 31:18, Psalms 51:10

The wind moves as the breath of life for every day living and the tide moves ever onward toward sanctification ... a holiness of heart and life.. the cache22 ... trusting Christ for holiness isn't obtainable if there is no desire to be made righteous in heart and life.

The comforts of the gospel are to be obtained first! In creation mankind entered first into His Rest. Rest came before the work and the walk. God has already prepared the redemptive rest. After we enter into it then we will be fitted to work. But we must first receive the comforts of the gospel ... whereby we may be able to perform sincerely the duties contained in the law of the Spirit. The gospel is first meant to comfort and soften our hearts.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
But our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us, and given us eternal consolation and good hope by grace, encourage your hearts, and establish you in every good work and word.

Acquaint yourself with the rich grace of God toward those in Christ. All of the abundant spiritual blessings made to partake of... The strong consolation that exhorts those in Christ to holy conversation and conduct befitting such privileges. It's the method in all of the epistles. The comfortable benefits must be believed and the comfort of them applied to the soul. Romans 6:11, Romans 8:9, Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 6:15, 1 Corinthians 6:19 The heart strengthened to take on the work. A holy life begins with comfort but it's also maintained by it.

Philippians 3:12
It's not that I have already reached this goal or have already become perfect. But I keep pursuing it, hoping somehow to embrace it just as I have been embraced by Christ Jesus.

John 15:5 says we can do nothing w/o abiding in Him and in abiding we will bear much fruit. It's not a doing thing but it is a resting. Jesus said His peace He leaves with us and that peace is beyond worldly understanding. So peace and resting (abiding) isn't something that is effected by feelings or circumstance. It's based on hope which is seen in faith and that is the assurance that anchors the soul. Hebrews 6:18-20 That verse also says it is our strong consolation when we aren't feeling it.
When we overstep our conscience He is the mediator to cleanse the guilt of disobedience. Peace is restored. Isaiah 26:2-4

Romans 12:1-4 True and proper worship is to allow the transforming of the mind. What I would call a miracle is the Holy Spirit transmitting a concept into the human spirit that the mind can digest to become a path on which to walk and a way in which to serve the Body. We can learn to hear that still small voice that we recognize as God. It's the knowing that faith is built on. Like when we first believed.

Legalists would say you have to do something but grace doesn't. When I feel most lost is when I'm spending no time in prayer and I think that's the lest-felt sin there is. To me that's overstepping the conscience for a long while. But it's still just a feeling within and circumstances that can be righted by going to the mediator.

Hope is the shadow of the reality of love. Our bodies have a great amount of insulation that blocks the Son from shining His full ray of Love upon us.
1 John 4:15
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
1 Corinthians 6:17
He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
Hebrews 6:18-20
God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

The hope is central to the teaching of the book of Hebrews. The author feared that the Hebrews were, by reason of sloth, too far back in the Christian life to receive the higher teaching.
Hebrews unfolds two great heavenly mysteries. The one is that of the heavenly priesthood of Christ, the other that of the heavenly sanctuary in which He ministers and into which He gives access. Both of these mysteries are mentioned as the hope set before us.

Hope enters into the veil and finds there our forerunner who has entered for us. The hope here is objective.
The hope in these verses are the anchor of our soul

As our hearts are fixed on the hope, the hope as a subjective grace is stirred and drawn and enters within the veil.
Mind (soul) along with heart and emotion (stirred and drawn) is the power of the universe realised!

Where our hope lives there the heart lives. There we, our real selves, are living too in the new nature.

So if/when we're feeling lost we can find our true point of reference there.

~Examples of a disciple~

Daniel a disciple of integrity

Daniel 1:1-21 "Prove thy servant"
Daniel had a life dedicated and surrendered to God

Daniel 2:20-22 "He giveth wisdom and knowledge"
Daniel was a light amid the darkness

Daniel 3:17-25 "whom we serve is able to deliver"
Daniel always triumphed thru his trials

Daniel 5:17 "revelations of God"
Daniel received the reward of service.

Daniel 6:10-24 "no manner of hurt found"
Daniel exhibited prayer and confidence in God

Daniel 9:3-19 " understanding of truth"
Daniel went to the Lord to confess and entreat

Daniel 12:3 " shine as bright as stars"
Daniel found the wisdom of winning souls
***************************
Prayer for Integrity

God, give us of the faithful! A time like this demands
Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands

Faithful ones whom the lust of office does not kill
Faithful ones whom the spoils of office cannot buy

Faithful ones who possess opinions and a will
Faithful ones who have honor, ones who will not lie

Faithful ones who stand before a demogogue
and damn the treacherous flatteries without winking

Tall ones, soncrowned, who live above the fog
in public duty and private thinking:

For while the rabble with their thumbworn creeds
their large professions and little deeds

Mingle in selfish strife, lo! Freedom weeps
Wrong rules the land & waiting justice sleeps

God has predestined to use whomsoeverHewould. Cyrus was predestined according to prophesy but Cyrus was outside of God's chosen people. God used Tamar to add Perez to Christ's bloodline while still remaining in Christ's ancestry of Judah. He used Ruth, a Moabite, also in that bloodline to add the Kinsman redeemer.

These are things associated with God's plan thru Christ to which we are added by grace. But Grace is also advantages to mankind in general just as He allows the sun and rain to fall upon the just and unjust. Grace is advantages to all people, not Christians alone.
God's wisdom is concentrated in Christ, He has been made God's wisdom for us. When Christ rose from the grave and was seated at the right hand of God, He became the new covenant. The New Covanent IS between Him and the Father and whomsoeverHEwills is added as co-inheritors.
Colossians 1:26-27
the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Romans 8:29-30
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance,[a] having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will,
Ephesians 1:5
He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Ephesians 1:11
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will,

God's Wisdom in Christ is the mystery revealed. Romans 9:13-33 God created vessels to contain Himself. The containers prepared from the beginning are mankind, all are deemed savable because all have been created in His image. He did so in order that He might make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He had before prepared unto glory. His choosing has gone thru Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and now thru Jesus Christ. In making His glory known to us in His mercy He saves us to become His vessels of honor. In a great house there are not only gold and silver vessels but also wooden and earthen; and some are unto honor, and some unto dishonor. Some for great work some for every day use.
2 Timothy 2:19
But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness.”
Isaiah 26:13
O Lord our God,
other lords besides you have ruled over us,
but we acknowledge your name alone.
The firm foundation here is His church/body. Those who are His stand in His Name alone.

Sitting in the morning sun contemplating the gifts of God and what brings that into our lives.
Love does. Love is the key factor. We love Him because He first loves us. Love shines light on the path. Will responds which shines more light on the path . Growth occurs. It's a dance of love light and response that creates growth.
The eyes of God look to and fro on the earth for those who are of a contrite heart. Response is the only thing that causes growth.
Abraham believed and that was counted faith.
Abraham was willing to sacrifice his future and the sacrifice was made.
Love shone on him and will received. So more light was given.
Love came first. Not the chicken or the egg. ;)

Deuteronomy 29:29
The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, to observe all the words of this law.

Mystery is truth undiscoverable except thru revelation, never necessarily a thing unintelligable. God's initial movement toward mankind is thru things known and causing it to be approached in an attitude of faith. It's really our duty to discover that which has been revealed for ourselves and future generations, for the purpose of observing the things of God. That which is not revealed can be reverently rested upon as belonging to the secret things of God.[I/] We know that the life, death and resurrection of Christ are all things that are revealed. Divine self-expression became understandable to humans when He took on flesh to dwell among us. His mode of operandi was as the position of a servant in obedience and submission to God's will.
We know that His life, death and resurrection were predestined from before the beginning of the world, as well as Him being the head and that His body would be a part of that pre-concieved plan. His future plans for those in Him has also been revealed so should also be required study. We know from scripture that is God's revealed plan and is a foundational part of Christianity.

While we have His example in letter there is the Spirit to help us carry it out. Christ's example says "Thy will and not mine be done" Yeilding(human will) to the will of God away from our own will is turning to God away from idols, leaving the way open for God to act on our behalf. His was an unceasing recognition of God thereby everything He did showed the forces of diety in union with the capacities of humanity.

Jesus exemplified yeilding(human will) when He yeilded to being baptised (associated in symbol of sacrifice and offering,) associated symbolically with death. In the final association He associates Himself with them in actual death.

Yeilding(human will) to God, light falls on the pathway, and creates love. Love suggests obedience. The will, impulsed by love, yeilds to light. The experience that follows obedience increases light and love, and thus there is perpetual progress, groth, developement in the grace that makes mankind grow in favor with God and mankind.

An excellent study on this topic ~ G. Campbell Morgan ~ The Crises of the Christ~ 1903

The New Testament is unique in the bible because the contents are meant for a unique people, those of the new birth, the new creation. More unique still in the history of the word of God is the time of the gospels, when God incarnate walked the earth. It was a time unparrelled that will never be seen again. During that time the disciples of Jesus were in possession of the fact of His Presence in the world but were unaware of the significance. They saw the facts of the works that He performed and their memories were stored with the words that He had spoken to them. They had the fact of the Word made flesh as well as the God's Word spoken to them but what they lacked was an interpretation of the facts. They lacked the conception of Christ as the Supreme Word of God ..... until ....

They needed guidance into the truth and it wasn't until a shift of understanding occured that Jesus could commence with deeper teachings. That shift came in recognition of Who He is.
"Thou art the Christ the Son of the Living God" A revelation from the Father.

John 16:13-14

1st value
"Howbeit when the Spirit of truth shall come, He shall guide you into all the truth"
(parenthical interpretation)
for He shall not speak from Himself; but what things soever He shall hear, these shall He speak
2nd value
and He shall declare to you the things that are to come
Common Value
He shall glorify Me
(parenthical interpretation)
for He shall take of Mine and declare it unto you"

Jesus didn't speak from His humanity but rather that which He heard from the Father and in this way declared the Father to them in His glory.
In the same way the guidance of the Holy Spirit reveals Christ to us ... the Holy Spirit guided the first disciples and thru them His people for all time, into the truth concerning Jesus Christ Himself. In the epistles we find the step by step leading.

This is the fulfillment of the 1st value " He shall guide you into all the truth"

Christ introduced the new and living Way, that is thru the veil which is His flesh. The veil is further drawn aside in the book of Revelation, teachings for the church in mainly in symbolic form.

This is the 2nd value fulfilled " He shall declare to you the things that are to come"

From all of these leadings were led to discover
- the Mystery of His Person ( the incarnation)
- the graciousness of His teachings
- the beauty of His character
- the wonder of His deeds
- Him as the anointed Servant of God
- the movement of God toward the redemption of mankind.

This is what God had foreshown:

Acts of the apostles 3:17-22
My friends, I am sure that you and your leaders didn’t know what you were doing.
But God had his prophets tell that his Messiah would suffer, and now he has kept that promise.
So turn to God! Give up your sins, and you will be forgiven.
Then that time will come when the Lord will give you fresh strength. He will send you Jesus, his chosen Messiah.
But Jesus must stay in heaven until God makes all things new, just as his holy prophets promised long ago.
Moses said, “The Lord your God will choose one of your own people to be a prophet, just as he chose me. Listen to everything he tells you.
Acts of the apostles 17:29-31
Since we are God’s children, we must not think that he is like an idol made out of gold or silver or stone. He isn’t like anything that humans have thought up and made.
In the past, God forgave all this because people did not know what they were doing. But now he says that everyone everywhere must turn to him.
He has set a day when he will judge the world’s people with fairness. And he has chosen the man Jesus to do the judging for him. God has given proof of this to all of us by raising Jesus from death.

The 2 facts insisted upon in these statements are that the result is the actual return of the Lord Jesus Christ. In them we see the restoration and the methodology.

Discipleship

G3101 ~ disciple, occurs 268 times in 252 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV
Yet 'disciples' is not found at all in the epistles. Christians in the epistles are addressed corporately as saints or separated ones.

The term disciple marks an individual's relationship existing between Christ and the single soul of each of His followers, marking our everyday existence with Him as our true relationship with Him. It gives the picture of Him peering over us as His pupil and imparting knowledge into us, precept upon precept, step by step, working toward a definite end. A disciple is one who sits at His feet and learns from Him. In the desires of the heart the disciple is desiring the same as the Master. To them He is the life-force of learning-obeying-and renewing. Disciples are those who gather 'round His feet, are trained by Him, His cover over them.'

Jesus said that all the law and the prophets are summed up in "loving God with all our hearts, all our strength and all our will" as well as loving neighbor as ourselves. Forsaking all to follow Him is akin to the idea of loving God first and foremost as the only qualifier for discipleship. Luke 14:26, Luke 18:29 something that is impossible without God's help of turning from all other idols to turn toward God. Those who follow after wealth and fame in life may now have all the rewards they are ever going to get. But those who forsake all to follow Him will sit with Him to judge in the coming age. Luke 22:30, Matthew 19:27-28

Discipleship rather than corporate belonging is that which is of a highest quality to press toward daily.

Galatians 4

Now I say, As long as the heir is a child, he differs nothing from a bondman, though he be lord of all;

2 but he is under guardians and stewards until the period fixed by the father.

3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the principles of the world;

4 but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, come of woman, come under law,

5 that he might redeem those under law, that we might receive sonship.

6 But because ye are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 So thou art no longer bondman, but son; but if son, heir also through God.

8 But then indeed, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods;

9 but now, knowing God, but rather being known by God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly principles to which ye desire to be again anew in bondage?

Discipleship, romance and redemption

I have casually linked to romance and redemption because of the story of Ruth and Boaz

The law
Leviticus 25:25
“ ‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold.
Ruth ( a Moabite listed in Jesus' geneology) is redeemed by Boaz

The redemption portrayed in the bible
Ruth 3:3–4
Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.”

Redemption unto all of God's people
Ezekiel 16:8
‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.

And unto us in Christ
1 Peter 1:18–19
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

From there we can see our redemption. From the angels we can see how heaven refers to us, His followers, as diciples
Mark 16:7
But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’

But mostly we can see discipleship in sitting at His feet and learning of Him. Disciples are those who gather 'round His feet, are trained by Him, His cover over them. To them He is the life-force of learning-obeying-and renewing.

John 8:31
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

Remarkably the word disciples is not found in all of the epistles, just in the gospels. That's because Christians are being addressed corporately , as saints or separated ones in the epistles. The subject has moved from the disciple to the corporate body.
The analogy of discipleship vs corporate would be similar to Song of Songs with the bride and king relationship in contrast to that of God and the nation of Israel. Singular to corporate.

Looking at the relationship as it progresses thru the bible is quite amazing. Redemption is equated with kinsman redeemer and says a lot about why God incarnate needed, according to law, to become one of mankind to serve as the one who could be a flesh and blood relative to us (as Boaz was to Naomi, Ruth's mother-in-law from her former marraige to Naomi's dead son)as the qualifyer.

Luke 16:16
Until John, there was only the Law and the Prophets. Since then, the good news of God’s kingdom is preached, and everyone is urged to enter it.
Matthew 11:12
From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven is violently attacked as violent people seize it.
Luke 1:33
He will rule over Jacob’s house forever, and there will be no end to his kingdom.”

Kairos was fulfilled by the proclaimation of John the baptist.
Everyone who fulfills the required "turning" forces the way 'with power' into the Basileia, increasingly becoming a reality.
Yet it remains impercievable: one must 'believe', 'trust',
belief being in recognised truth and trust being in the relationship with the divine.
Not merely an attitude of soul is required to accomplish turning but, since the kairos is fulfilled, those who have achieved the turning to God's Way penetrate into the dynamis.
Yet there remains an unfitness if not completely in surrender
to the change of heart, conformity of will and transformation of mind, eminating from belief and trust. One condition demands the other.
Pistis, recognition of truth, trust in relationship, results in belief = faith

Acts of the Apostles 8:5-24
"This is the great exousia of God! Sell me some duminas"
Power = duminas
What the world considers power is flashy, explosive action.

Exodus 34:6-7
Exousia = power
More purely represents God's highest power of quite inner strength revealed in noble character.

The wisdom of God is seen in the freedom that is only from Him. As Christ's disciples we are free because of the truth that we abide in.
John 8:31-32
Then said Jesus to those Jews who believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed;
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Any soldier in any army is fighting for freedom. Sometimes it's to take it away from others or to protect it, or to restore it to those who have lost it. But some freedoms this world cannot secure. Freedom from sins with their eternal consequences, freedom from helplessnes, or freedom from death. Jesus' audience that day were those who believed they had never been enslaved. Untrue as that was in view of Babylon they completely missed the point of being enslaved to the outward signs of religion and missing the things of God.
Galatians 5:1
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

There is no dependance in a return to Judaism, as Paul points out. As a schoolmaster it led us to Christ. The law is profitable for study to learn from it's examples. But that can't justify, nor will returning to it for justification result in anything but enslavement.
Romans 6:14
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

We are to stand guard over our freedom so as not to have it eroded or ourselves enslaved again. Peter warns to do so may cause the final state of enslavement to be even worse than the first.
2 Peter 2:18-22
For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh and through much wantonness those who had clean escaped from those who live in error.
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he brought into bondage.
For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they had known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb: “The dog turns to his own vomit again,” and, “the sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”

Jesus' words to the Pharisees of His day were in much the same context as Peter's. (Reading Peter in the Greek gives much more insight into his meanings) Never let the the modern version of Pharisee rob you of your freedom. Never let empty human philosophy of ism-ism's take your freedom away. They cannot save. Only the gospel can do that!
1 Corinthians 1:18-22
For the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who perish; but unto us who are saved, it is the power of God.
For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
For since, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe.
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom;

Worldly wisdom is constantly trying to entice us away from our salvation and the freedom that is in Christ. The Christian's answer:

"It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery."
