  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No. In theory, at least, it would be possible for a computer running a genetic algorithm to make a robot. So one cannot say that all robots that will ever be made will be designed by an intelligent being.

but such an algorithm need a design too.

Genetic algorithms can in theory make a robot just like genetic processes make penguins
This is why I think it's reasonable to say evolution is a design process, though not a purposeful one; a process of 'bottom-up' design, producing competence without comprehension. Natural selection filters according to the implicit design criterion of survival.

And could not the designer of the algorithm be an algorithm that designs algorithms?

If a robot does not need a designer, as long as there is a robot designing algorithm, then do you agree that a penguin would not need a designer, as long as there is a penguin designing process?

There is a penguin designing process already--evolution.

ok. do you agree that by definion a BICYCLE is a product of design?

Design by an intelligent agency, yes.

Of course, this is working on the assumption that a bicycle is defined as a metal vehicle consisting of a metal framework built of two triangles, with one fixed wheel, one steerable wheel (by means of a handlebar attached to a fork inserted through part of the triangular frame), with the fixed wheel connected by a chain to a gear turned by a crank with pedals attached so a human rider can operate those pedals and thus propel the bicycle with his or her feet.

I have yet to see anything fitting that definition which was NOT the result of an intelligent agency. Of course, if someone ever showed me how such a device could come about WITHOUT having been designed by some intelligent agency, I'd be happy to re-evaluate my position.

No - looks like a self-replicating watch to me.

thanks. so if a bicycle was able to evolve naturally (without a designer) then we cant consider it as a bicycle. right? by the way (just as a note): english isnt my native so i may not understand some of your words.

but such an algorithm need a design too.

That's like saying that ice at the north pole is not naturally occuring, because freezers are designed and manufactured at a factory.

In reality, the freezer just replicates / simulates the conditions that makes water freeze.

Just like a genetic algoritm replicates / simulates the conditions that makes systems that replicate with variation and compete for limited resources, evolve.

The point is that the process provides a platform upon wich fully functioning systems can arise, without any pre-planned intent or purposefull design.
