  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If Our Lord didn't intend to grant authority to men... um, why did He say He was granting authority to men?
That can't be ... because the Bible can't mean that ... because Bible Christians don't believe that ... even if the Bible says it plain as day.

I asked first.

If Our Lord didn't intend to delegate authority (for want of a better way to put it), why did He delegate authority?

My question anwers yours.
If it does then scripture might be contradicting itself. So how then do you resolve the fact that Our Lord delegated authority to men?

Matthew 28:18 (RSVCE) And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the ed of the age.”
(therefore is a conjunctive verb joining vs 18, 19. The Bible had no verse numbers until the 15th century.) Jesus gives HIS authority to baptize and teach to the Magisterium, that's why He said He has all authority, because He has the authority to give it.

Eisegetic version:

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me therefore you don't have any. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, (by giving them a book so they can decide on there own) baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything (but some things are optional) that I have commanded to each individual And remember, I am with you always, after I get back from vacation in 1517.

Perhaps the problem is the teacher, not the students. Honestly, brother, your witness leaves a lot to be desired. I can only imagine how the children in your class must feel if this is how you interact with them.

The children in my class are not trying to tell me I am wrong and being smart alecks with me. Every year I get nice notes from the attentive ones telling me how much they enjoyed the class. These notes are precious to me.

But the one I really liked this year was the one that said "Thank you for helping me love God better."

Guess I'm doing something right. Maybe if you join my class you can learn the Catholic faith for the first time in your life.

What was the significance of the temple curtain being torn?

Not that you will listen, but I will give you the answer.

What was that part of the Temple used for? It was the Holiest of All where once a year, Yom Kippur (Lev. 16) was performed and the covenant between God and man was renewed by the forgiveness of the national sins of the people.

When Christ died, that ended the covenant. We know that it ended the covenant because God in His Word has likened the covenant to a marriage. In fact, the ancient heretics, the Puritans, used to refer to "the covenant of marriage" in their ceremonials (even a blind pig finds an acorn of truth once in a while). In Hosea, God likens His relationship to national Israel as a marriage, with His spouse playing the harlot with idols and false "gods."

Therefore, thinking this analogy through, we come to realize that when a spouse dies, that covenant of marriage is ended. This is true whether the spouse dies of natural causes or is killed by the other spouse. Either way, there is no longer a relationship and no longer an "other" in the covenant, which means that there is no covenant.

Jesus, God in the Flesh, is murdered by His spouse, national Israel, and the covenant is over. The sign that this is over is that the veil is torn from top to bottom. This exposed the Holiest of All to the whole world. A place where only the eyes of a high priest could see into was shown to the whole world. This desecrated the Holiest of All and thus made it unfit for any further use.

The tearing of the Temple veil is the sign that the covenant is over, and it took place at the same time that Jesus said "It is finished," which means that both the work of salvation is finished, and the Old Covenant promising salvation was also finished.

That's your answer. All your questions about the Catholic faith can be answered by coming to understand the Covenant of God, how it works, and what are its principles. And if and when you come to properly understand the Covenant of God, it will return you to the Catholic faith because every Protestant denomination out the violates one or more of those five working principles.

By the way, the very reason that I volunteered to teach 6th grade CCD is that the book is all about covenant. Each chapter title is something to do with covenant. And since the covenant led me to the Catholic faith, talking about it, teaching it, and understanding it are things very important and enjoyable to me.

I spent decades immersed in the RCC, and then one day the good Lord moved me to put down catechism and pick up a Bible. I thank Him every day for that gift. I only wish more people would stop following the words of men and start following the word of God.

And your answer regarding the temple curtain was only partially, minimally correct. You missed the most important and obvious part. Read Hebrews.

I have read Hebrews, especially chapters 7-10, which shows us that the high priesthood of earth is over and Jesus is the Great High Priest. I have a feeling that you are thinking of something else, however, so I would appreciate if you would share with me the verses of which you are thinking and what you feel they teach against the Catholic faith.

It was knowledge of the Bible, studied for 25 years, that led me to the Catholic faith. The same is true for Scott Hahn, Robert Sungenis, and a whole host of other X-Protestants, many of them brilliant men, who were immersed in Scripture and who found the Scripture leading them to the Catholic faith.

You picked up a Bible and began to read, but without a guide, it is easy to go wrong. Look at all the strange cults like the JW's, the Mormons, etc. who will beat you to death with your own KJV if you let them, twisting verses out of context and taking a single verse to create a whole religion, as did the SDA's. We all need a guide, and that guide has to be the Holy Tradition, which is nothing more than what the first Christians taught before there was even a canon of Scripture. They are a good and reliable guide as to what the Apostles taught, for they learned from the Apostles.

You’re getting warmer…

Yes, yes, I know. We need the RCC to tell us what the Bible says. And we know it’s true because, well, that’s what the RCC says. (I’ll pass)

I didn't say the RCC, did I? You see, you can't even read English correctly and yet you fancy yourself a great Bible scholar. Go back and read my post and let me know when you get the correct answer.

Never mind, I'll give it to you.

"We all need a guide, and that guide has to be the Holy Tradition, which is nothing more than what the first Christians taught before there was even a canon of Scripture. They are a good and reliable guide as to what the Apostles taught, for they learned from the Apostles."

The RCC has also left this Holy Tradition, teaching things that were not known in the first century, such as the Immaculate Conception, Purgatory, Merit, Indulgences, and other innovations, such as sprinkling for baptism when to baptize means to IMMERSE.

I am not RCC.....and I have nothing in common with RCC teachings. But what you just did is very instructive IF you will open your eyes. You read a passage I wrote and automatically made an assumption that was dead wrong!!! You approached it with a preconceived notion, a presupposition of truth.

Which is the same thing that Protestants do with the Scriptures and the Catholic (that is universal, not Roman) faith.

If you are wise, you will ponder what just happened in light of our conversation.

Ah yes, purgatory and indulgences. Good stuff if you're trying to fund the building of St. Peter's Basilica. Not so much if you're following the word of God. Me? I'll stick with God, thank you very much.

Maybe you should join the first Church and become Holy Orthodox. You would be in line with all the apostles taught and you wouldn't be believing the innovations of Rome which have been invented since 1054 AD.

Just ponder that....

I'm good with being a Christian and following the word of God. Not looking to follow the word of men, but thanks anyway.

You still don't get it, do you?

Question: what were the men in the first, second, and third century following? It couldn't have been the Bible as as men who were "sola scriptura" because the canon was not even made yet. So what do you think they were following and from where did they learn it?

The fact that you're angered by people who refuse to follow your chosen religious leaders, and instead choose to follow the word of God? Yeah, I got it.

Uhhhhhh........we didn't chose the Apostles. Christ did. Next wrong statement, please?
