  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are ‘Antifa’ and the Alt-Right Equally Violent?

Are 'Antifa' and the 'Alt-Right' Equally Violent?
In the hours and days following the deadly “Unite the Right” rally on 12 August 2017, President Donald Trump laid the blame for the violence that took the lives of three people in Charlottesville, Virginia on “many sides.”

The claim that white supremacists and counter-demonstrators carry equal responsibility for the weekend melee in Charlottesville has been widely rejected — both Democrat and Republican lawmakers have repudiated the views espoused by rally attendees who were seen using racist and anti-Semitic epithets and carrying Nazi symbols. But the president’s comments have drawn attention to far left demonstrators known as “antifa” (short for anti-fascist), who have been showing up to counter white supremacist rallies, sometimes violently).

However, videos of a car ramming into a group of pedestrians protesting the rally doesn’t show any antifa members of in the crowd. Instead, Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman who was killed, was a Charlottesville local and many of the people in the area appeared to be regular demonstrators. Nevertheless on the day she was killed, President Trump said:
tulc(MAGA by making everyone just as guilty as his supporters?)

Both sides are equally guilty.

But the side that started it all is the guiltiest.

Just don't touch those monuments. Leave history to history. Problem solved.

I see...a community makes the decision that they no longer want to have their city displaying reminders of an ugly part of the past.

And then an outside group of racists and white supremacists make it their business to invade that community, telling the citizens of that community what they should or should not do...

But, the people who live in that community are the guilty ones, right...?!

No, the side responsible for the murder of an innocent young woman and the injury of many others is the guiltiest, morally and legally. It's insane to state otherwise, and just a flat-out evil lie.

Robert E Lee was against Civil War monuments, on account of how they keep open wounds of war. He sure was right on that one. His descendants & those of Jackson, other Confederate soldiers, have supported the monuments coming down. They can be moved to a history museum and written about it history books. Problem solved.

Technically speaking both sides have killed people and hurt people over time now. Both sides are guilty. Maybe we should just send such groups to the moon so the rest of us who aren't far leaning (in either direction) can leave relatively peaceful lives.

Then who were the people with the bats, masks and communist flags? Maybe if they hadn't caused 2 car crashes a few minutes earlier, and started beating on this guys car with bats, the woman would still be alive. I'm guessing they were too busy "bashing the fash" to think about any of this (or at all). At least these freaks showed up to her funeral with bats and shields to pay their respects.

both may have some guilt, I suspect they aren't equally guilty though.

Ahh! That would be the side that waves the swastika flags then.

Just don't touch those monuments. Leave history to history. Problem solved.
If only there was something that people could bring into their houses where they could learn/talk/see about history...maybe we could call them "books" or something? That would probably make someone a pretty penny if they invented something like that. :study:
tulc(wonders why no one ever thought of that before now?) :idea1:

I'd be interested in a few links to who the antifa were tried and convicted of killing.

Or people could stop pretending they're equally guilty?

So naive......................................................

Here's what the community really thinks of this foolish decision to destroy America's history:

"Charlottesville is a hot mess right now and the blame for the current state of affairs lies solely at the feet of its inept and divisive City Council."

Charlottesville's community overwhelmingly voted to keep the statue and to keep the park's name. Here's how the three city councilors who voted to sell the statue responded:

In response to the survey data, Charlottesville’s tunnel vision trio had this to say:

Fenwick: "I understand that Lee Park is what the majority of people want now, but I don't think that would be appropriate."

Szakos: “We decided to change the names. We’re not going to go with the majority. This was a way to submit ideas.”

Bellamy: “It’s not rocket science to understand what’s happening,” he said. “You have people clicking things multiple times.”

But not so "naive" to believe that some random comment on Facebook is representative of the entire Charlottesville community...!

This is exactly what the community thinks. The community fought the criminal decision of the city council and won!

Charlotesville's community, including many organizations, such as Board of Architectural Review, The Historical Resources Committee etc were against selling the statue and renaming the park. They fought the decision vigorously and won.
