Aren't most MRE's made in Utah? I remember when Glenn Beck was promoting prepping some ten years ago, and the food he was promoting was made in Utah by Mormon's? Are Mormon's Christians? Should we spend our money on Mormons, or Christians?

Mormons have a thing where they are supposed to keep enough food to last them for a full year. So, it would make sense if a commercial MRE were manufactured in Utah, because I guess you would need a fairly large kitchen to stock all of that food, otherwise, and rotating stock would be pretty boring.

But just because they were made in Utah doesn't mean that you are supporting Mormons. Isn't it just as likely that they are junk MRE's made for scamming Mormons?

That gets into an area not allowed in this particular forum.

As to MREs, I am not so sure that most of them are made in Utah. But most preppers are looking long term storage of things like rice, beans, canned good, peanut butter, flour, etc, and not just MREs.

Mormons have a thing where they are supposed to keep enough food to last them for a full year.

I can't see that this is a bad idea, if you have the space. You shouldn't have to be a Mormon to be prudent, particularly in these troubled times.

As for MRE's, well, there are more cost effective methods of building stores. MRE's are ideal for 72 hour bug-out packs, but for long term bug-in scenarios I'd always go for raw, dried and/or canned staples.

Yep, all those fancy foods cost you an arm and a leg, so beans, wheat, white rice, lentils, buckwheat, corn etc... are the staples you need to store.

Now don't laugh, but as the Bible says we need to be wise. So I buy our Mylar bags from the LDS website, they are 1gal an 10mm thick ideal for all mylaring. Now 2 things.

1: Before you ask about how to mylar and even canning food, the answers are on this Christian site, very informative for Christian preppers/homesteaders.

We bought a bunch of taco meat MREs a few months ago. We add a pact to a pound of beans with some onion, peppers, diced tomatoes, etc. Nice chili for only a couple bucks.

MRE's are produced by the military. It's the freeze dried food that is produced in Utah.

Freeze dried lasts 'forever' but they also taste that way.

Patriot's supply has a good supply of various food stuffs.. btw.

Some in Venezuela are surviving because they prepped with the above food (ahead of time of course).

BUT we have to also consider, as I do with dehydrated foods, the amount of water we will need. Those in Venezuela never imagined they would not have a water source...now they are drinking the sewage water!

I considered the water needs for my dehydrated foods... and have mainly only done those that really can be eaten without water. Of course some, like the sliced carrots, will take FOREVER to finish one bite relying upon saliva only ROFL... unless I made them very thin like the roll up jelly candy? Nah.
They are tiny tiny... when dried.

We have gone to the Mormon store and purchased items. I don't know any Christian denominations that offer prep items. Since most active churches believe in the rapture they tend not to believe we will even endure hard times. Also many in the faith movement do not see the need to prep since they do not believe Christians will ever starve or otherwise endure any hardship. So we go to the Mormons for our preps. They are very nice people and very helpful.

I would say Mormons are people. People have to eat and need to purchase goods to survive. I buy things from people, not because of what they believe, but because they are human and are selling things in order to live. I'm all about life. So, that's how it works. They sell, I buy, they now have money to buy what they need. If what they believe is concerning to me, we can discuss that as they give me my change. Simple.

Mormons are christian. I would say there is a good chance they will NOT try to rip you off. Even if the owner of the company is not Morman they will usually have Mormorns working for them.

We have some good Mormon friends who joined us in our homeschool efforts. Nice people. Very devout, kind, and gentle.

MRE's are nice to have (we have several meal types currently) but they can be a bit pricey. It is easier for me to grow and harvest my own food and proceed with canning what the summer/fall yields. Or collect from a farmers market (beans, potatoes) and can that way.

The stuff in it is not something desirable, like corn syrup solids and all the rest of stuff people typically avoid, I wont touch the stuff until I absolutely have to. You can freeze dry your own. The cost of freeze dried beef (given the number of calories in the entire can) is such a rip off, you might as well buy a freeze dryer (even just to use temporarily) to freeze dry enough bulk beef and set it aside.

I wish we had a local freeze dryer people could pass along between each other. I think the price of a freeze dryer is almost the same price of 3-4 cases of freeze dried meat. Depending on which price you buy them at some places have each can priced over $100 theres (which does not contain enough calories for a day for a single woman). I know you are supposed to mix things in but theres like 10 calories in onions, and 15 calories in celery, it seems ridiculous to count on adding so much as to make a difference when taking into consideration the serving size calories which are 1/18th the whole can.

But if you get a freeze dryer for around $2300 its far more worth it. You get to pick your own meats in bulk and can your own.

If you do not have cannery though you would need alot of canning jars. You could buy cases of the half gallon ball jars too.

Thats a tough decision for me also. I think I will keep buying up Yoders, they have a minimum of 10 years which means they can last longer then that in reality. Those cans are HUGE too, they are 2 lbs a piece, enough for you and your wife/husband and dog (or a child). For one meal a day.

Back in the day when I lived off the grid, we canned meat in the pressure cooker using typical canning jars. We used it up over the course of the year. It was a great way to take care of some spare goats and hard to tell the meat from beef. Canned both chunks and ground meat. Also canned spare milk, which turned out a lot like, well, canned milk.
