  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was taught that too as a kid in Church of the Nazarene sunday school. It was a doctrine of the late 19th to mid 20th century Wesleyan Holiness groups. Probably due to Victorian Era prudish attitudes.
Sounds about on the same level as futile 'edicts' about the design of bikinis, or something.

Your good as asking questions, Sam!
In farming societies children are almost free workers and add to the family wealth. So they have more children.
In business societies children cost money from school, child care and after school activities, so they have few children.

I read in a book Adam and Eve were clothed in light.
In sunday school I remember seeing a drawing of Adam and Eve before the fall. They looked like they were about 10 or 12 years old and had a ball of yellow light that covered them from their shoulders to their knees.

I have looked but it seems no one has uploaded that pic to the web; or if they have, not in a place where I can find it.

I can understand euphemisms, discreet drawings, etc.

But the idea of teaching that Adam and Eve were not naked after all is eisegesis - putting into the text - rather than exegesis - getting the meaning out of the text.

I've not seen a picture with Adam and Eve clothed in light. They have all been them standing behind a bush.
I think it would be better of they were naked and then all this fear of seeing a naked person might fall away!

I used to have a set of my dad's commentaries that he used in seminary. They were Benson's and dated about 1860 in London. They were the benchmark for conservative Wesleyanism.

In the preface to the Song of Solomon, Benson wrote that the book had to be ENTIRELY taken as allegory of Christ and the Church. To take it in its literal sense of sexuality was unthinkable and unchristian.

Do you remember when John Ashcroft was attorney General in the Bush admin? He was offended that the symbol of the dept was a naked woman with blindfolds on holding the pan balances. He ordered robes to cover all the statues of her.

Well, I'm dispensational and I don't even see the church in the Old Testament. In Song of Solomon I see Israel as the allegorical referent.

Up here a court more or less legalized toplessness. (I don't agree with the idea, mind you.) But to me it seems plain futile for some people to go on perpetuating sterile debates about swimsuit designs when toplessness is widely practised.

Another way it was done was to depict Eve with extremely long hair which then functioned as her 'clothing'; somehow Adam would then be obscured by Eve.

That's right, farouk, I forgot about that one. Tho wasn't the bush up to Eve's waist and hair down over her breasts?
This is one way of doing it if it's for viewing by young people. What I struggle with is the idea of starting to argue that they weren't actually naked at all.

But having hair down to there and hiding behind bushes is not really naked either.
They only hid behind the bushes to cover up AFTER the fall.

The kid's Bibles and coloring pages I've seen have Adam & Eve "hiding" behind bushes before the Fall (to conceal them from the kids). After the Fall, they had their leaf or fur clothes on, and didn't have to be hidden anymore.

One coloring picture I've seen has the newly-created Eve being escorted by God to meet Adam. She is obviously nude and obviously female. I would LOVE to pass that one out to the Childrens Church kids!

This may be strange to most people, but I would almost always rather be completely nude, especially in nature. I'm 27 and I've been somewhat of a closet nudist for the last 10 years of my life. Theres nothing sexual about it for me, it just makes me feel happy and free. I'm never naked in front of anyone who is offended by it. It's usually just my wife and close friends who aren't bothered by nudity.

My question is, do you think there's something wrong with me? Is this sinful behavior, or do you find nothing wrong with it? Thanks.

Joel
Would the Lord Jesus Christ while on Earth have done it? If not, then Christians who are told to follow his example should not do it.

1 Peter 2:21 NIV
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

1 John 2:6
Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.

I personally don't think Jesus would have a problem with nudity. He sees people for who they are not because of how they are dresses or not dressed.
