  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

However, as assigned caretakers of the Earth, as Genesis points out-we are definitely responsible for any damage that we inflict on the environment and are expected to refrain from doing so. Instead of a careless attitude, we are expected to care since we were originally assigned to gradually transform the Earth into a global paradise under divine supervision. So simply saying that we have faith and going about ignoring the problems or even adding to them via environmental degradation isn't a biblically justifiable viewpoint as I am sure you will agree..
I do agree. I didn't write about stewardship, though. I wrote about our reaction to being afraid. I realize it can be read as ambiguous, though.

Not very many problems are greater than planning for our planet's future. If we want a viable world for our children's grandchildren, we must lower greenhouse emissions and search for alternative fuels now BEFORE there is a crisis.
Man's contribution to greenhouse gasses are negligible, and without those gases we'd be incinerated. I have no problem with investigating all energy sources, but for the time being, nothing can replace oil.

A significantly greater problem is the few number of people being faithful to God so He can save people though us.

What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26, 1984 NIV)

Part of being faithful to God is taking proper care of the Earth which he has entrusted to our care.

Psalm 115:16 NIV
The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to mankind.

Rev 11: 18
God will "bring to ruin those ruining the earth"

Oh, you're one of those. Not into the whole pronen science thing? More than that one of those who substitutes politics for science? P think it's better to substitute religion for science myself. More character building IMHO. :evergreen::evergreen::evergreen:

I grew up in the 60's and early 70's when we were told a global freeze was coming. Then it was global warming that was going to kill us all. After 17 years of no warming, it's climate change. The evidence is so unconvincing that researchers conspired to fabricate the evidence. Why? It's a multi-billion dollar industry.

If anthropological global warming was true it would be unique to this planet. However, warming trends on earth coincide with warming trends on Mars; a planet notably absent of SUV's. Activists point to a claim that 97% of scientists accept AGW as a fact. That is, of course, a lie.

A more extensive examination of the Cook study by the New American reported that, out of the nearly 12,000 scientific papers Cook’s team evaluated, only 65 endorsed Cook’s alarmist position. That is less than 0.97%. Their numbers are right, but their decimal point is way off.

The fact is, there is no global warming. We are being lied to by big government socialists who manufacture a crisis and claim only more government can help. A good list of some of the lies told by AGW believers can be found here.

-_- even if global warming isn't a thing, it's still valid to increase our use of renewable energy sources over ones which will run out. Burning coal and gasoline still makes the air quality drop, which has resulted in an increase in asthma attacks, especially in children.

I agree. But in the mean time we need to use the energy resources God provided.
Happy birthday.

What throws many people off in the global warming issue is climate vs weather. They see or experience an exceptionally cold winter in one geographical area and that tends to persuade them that concerns about global warming are unwarranted. A study of weather patterns over geologic time is needed in order for us to determine whether what is being presently experienced is indeed unusual or not. Which is of course what computer programs do and they indicate that we are indeed experiencing an unusually swift increase in global warming which positively correlates with the human-induced emission of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

BTW
The problem is being exacerbated by the gradual melting of the Tundra which releases methane, another greenhouses gas, which has been locked up in the soil for eons.
Atmospheric levels of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, are spiking, scientists report

More on methane
While carbon dioxide gets most of the attention in the global warming debate, methane is pound-for-pound a more potent greenhouse gas, capable of trapping some 20 times more heat than CO2. Although methane is present in much lower quantities in the atmosphere, its potency makes it responsible for about one-fifth of man-made warming.

The gas is found in natural gas deposits and is generated naturally by bacteria that break down organic matter, such as in the guts of farm animal. About two-thirds of global methane comes from man-made sources, and levels have more than doubled since the industrial revolution.

Unlike carbon dioxide, methane lasts only a decade or so in the atmosphere, which has led some experts to call for greater attention to curbs on its production. Reductions in methane emissions could bring faster results in the fight against climate change, they say.

CO2, without which our plants would suffocate, as we would without O2.

I really don't understand this argument.

Are you saying that if plants need a gas that this means the gas can not absorb IR radiation?

Are you saying that if plants need a gas that this gas can not be a greenhouse gas?

I don't understand how being plant food and absorbing IR radiation is mutually exclusive. Can you explain? Can I deny the fact that clouds are made of water because humans need water to survive?

How would you tell whether oil in a rock formation was formed there or leaked in from below?

By looking at the chemical signature and isotope signature of the crude oil. Photosynthesis causes an increase in 12C, the lightest of the carbon common isotopes. Oil is also rich in 12C compared to abiotic sources. If oil was created from abiotic sources then it would have less 12C than it does.

To find out, you would have to drill under the oil fields.

You don't have to drill under the oil fields to measure for 12C enrichment. Also, they do drill for oil. You are aware of this, aren't you? They also use techniques like seismic imaging to find source rocks, wells, and cap rocks.

Man's contribution to greenhouse gasses are negligible, and without those gases we'd be incinerated.

First, you offer no evidence that our contribution is neglible.

Second, without greenhouse gases in the atmosphere we would freeze to death.

You would think that after being wrong on just about everything that you would perhaps educate yourself on a few subjects.

But just as we don't do so well in elevated oxygen environments (prolonged, it can make people act drunk, or worse, hence one of the reasons oxygen tanks don't contain pure oxygen), too much CO2 hurts plant life as well. It can cause them to grow larger, but with less density to their nutrients and lower quality growth.

So as Earth increases its carbon dioxide in its atmosphere plants are in danger of gradually becoming sickly? Wow! I would have expected the opposite.

The scientists testing how higher CO2 affects plants weren't expecting the results they got either, large, nasty looking plants with yellowed leaves.
