• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Whoever walks in the LIGHT, obeys the FATHER'S COMMANDMENTS, eternally ! - HIS commandments never disappear.

John 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

Only one person could and has ever obeyed the Father's commandments.

Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.

Heb 8:13 In that He says, "A NEW COVENANT," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

I agree.

But you are assuming that every time the Bible says "commandments" it is referring to the "Ten Commandments".

It is not.

Every command Jesus gave to his disciples is a commandment.

When Jesus told his disciple to go and make disciples and baptize them, those were both commandments, but they were not of the "Ten Commandments".

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." -- (Matthew 28:19-20).

A commandment is simply a divine rule, and God has far more than Ten divine rules.

"Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." -- (Matthew 5:19).

A commandment is anything that Jesus commands us.

"The SEVENTH day is the SABBATH of the Lord thy God" Exodus 20:10

The Lord's Day!

“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath,
From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight,
The holy day of the Lord honorable,
And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
Nor finding your own pleasure,
Nor speaking your own words," Is 58:13

The Son of man is LORD of the Sabbath day - Mark 2:28

So also the "Sabbath was made for MANKIND" Mark 2:27
From "Sabbath to Sabbath shall ALL MANKIND come before Me to worship" Is 66:23.

Until you read the actual Bible.

There you find that the "NEW Covenant" includes the LAW of God "written on the heart and mind" - Jeremiah 31:31-33.

And in Ephesians 6:2 we find that the 5th Commandment is the "first commandment with a promise" in that still-valid unit of TEN - that scripture calls the "TEN Commandments"

The New Covenant is made with "the house of Israel" and that includes all Christians in Hebrews 8:6-10.

And of course

Ex 20
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Gen 2:1-4
Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens
Exodus 20:11
Hello Bob.

The Sabbath commandment is the old covenant law. We are a
new creation in Christ, we are no longer under the law.

Romans 3
20 By the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

Romans 3
28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Romans 4
13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 4
15 For the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.

Romans 4
16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law.

Romans 5
20 The Law came in so that the sin would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.

Romans 6
6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin. 7 For he who has died is freed
from sin.

Romans 6
14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Romans 6
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?

Romans 7
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that
we might bear fruit for God.

Hello Bob.

The Sabbath commandment is the old covenant law. .

The Ten Commandments contain the command not to take God's name in vain and the command to honor parents and the command to keep the Bible creation Sabbath of Genesis 2:1-3.

Some choose to be at war with that part of the Word of God -- I do not.

Nice thoughts.

Thanks for sharing that.

"what matters is KEEPiNG the Commandments of God" 1 Cor 7:19

"the saints KEEP the Commandments of God AND their faith in Jesus" Rev 14:12

"Do we then make VOID the Law by our faith? God forbid! In fact we establish THE Law" Rom 3:31

1 John 5:1-4 (NKJV)
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

James 2
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;
9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by THE Law as transgressors.
10 For whoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of THE Law. 12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

Ex 20:6 "love Me and KEEP My Commandments"
John 14:15 "IF you Love Me KEEP My Commandments"

So may argue that all that was before the cross - so pay no attention to that part of "scripture" -- it is not for Christians. Yet "Chrisitan" means - follower of Christ and Christ is speaking both in John 14 - and in Exodus 20.

By contrast to that speculative conclusion we have --

"what matters is KEEPiNG the Commandments of God" 1 Cor 7:19
"the saints KEEP the Commandments of God AND their faith in Jesus" Rev 14:12

So then what about Christ coming up with a different set of commandments - that are not those of God? Not those of God the Father and thereby negating the Commandments of God to replace them with other commandments - that come from Christ? Is that what we find in the New Testament?

Not according to Jesus' words in John's Gospel.

John 5:19 "19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner."

John 8:28 "28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.

John 12:49 49 For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.

John 14: "10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works."

Which is why in John 14:15 we see this
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Instead of "keep My Commandments - not My Father's commandments - just mine"

And it is why John 15:10 does not say that either

John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

And of course God the Father gave Jesus the ministry of "Savior" to the world such that Jesus prayed "Father if it be possible let this cup pass from me - nevertheless not my will - but Thy will be done"

John said - Jesus kept His Father's Commandments.

John said - we should do as Jesus did.
1 John 2: 6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.

==================================================
Jesus is the One that gave us the TEN Commandments - they were spoken by HiM as we see in the NEW Covenant

Heb 8 (And Jer 31:31-33)
6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. 8 For finding fault with them, He says,
“Behold, days are coming, says the Lord,
When I will effect a new covenant
With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
9 Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers
On the day when I took them by the hand
To lead them out of the land of Egypt;
For they did not continue in My covenant,
And I did not care for them, says the Lord.
10 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
After those days, says the Lord:
I will put My laws into their minds,
And I will write them on their hearts.
And I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.

Exegesis demands that the moral law of God written on the mind and heart in Jer 31:31-33 is the one that Jeremiah and his readers knew.

Do you view Jesus as opposed to the Father or the two and the Holy Spirit are "ONE God" in your/our monotheistic religion?

==========================

If you oppose the Commandments of God in NT times - then answer this question -

In Eph 6:2 - "honor your father and mother for this is the first commandment with a promise" -- what Law - what unit of Law is it to be found that 'honor your father and mother" is the FIRST commandment with a promise??

First commandment where??

in Christ,

Bob

Hello Bob.

Correct, the purpose of the law is to identify sin, taking God's name in vain is most certainly a sin. Thank Jesus Christ, for setting us free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8
3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son.

Your whole system of "bait and switch" changes the verse above to the following...

" If you keep My Fathers commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love."

Either Christ is wrong or you are wrong.

The Ten Commandments contain the command not to take God's name in vain and the command to honor parents and the command to keep the Bible creation Sabbath of Genesis 2:1-3.
The Jews obeyed the letter of the law as revealed through the Ten Commandments.

The Christian obeys the Spirit of the law as revealed through Jesus Christ.

"The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." -- (2 Cor 3:17).

Jesus, our Lord, is the Spirit of the law. Those who live by the Spirit of the law (the commands of Christ) are free from the letter of the law (the Ten Commandments). The Christian law comes from the living Word of the Spirit, and not from the written letters engraved on stones:

"He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant -- not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory…will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?" -- (2 Corinthians 3:6-8).

The Christian law is Jesus Christ himself, the living Word, who now lives in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

"'The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt...I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts'...By calling this covenant 'new,' he has made the first one obsolete" -- (Heb 8:8-9:1).

The new covenant of the Spirit (the living Word) is not like the old covenant of the letter (the Ten commandments). Christians live by the new covenant of the living Spirit, and not by the old covenant of the written letter.

"For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." -- (2 Corinthians 3:6-8).
Some choose to be at war with that part of the Word of God -- I do not.
Nor do I.

Correct, the purpose of the law is to identify sin, taking God's name in vain is most certainly a sin.

Indeed - the Gospel is not about finding new and creative ways to commit sin and not be concerned about it.

Romans 3:19-21 says that the Law of God tells us what sin is-

Rom 3:31-33 tells us in regard to that same Law "Do we then make void the LAW of God by our faith? God forbid! in fact we establish the LAW"

Instead of trying to find creative ways to get people to take God's name in vain - we actually oppose doing such things.

Romans 8:4-9 tells us that the wicked "do not submit to the LAW of God - neither indeed CAN they"

Ex 20:6 "love Me and KEEP My Commandments"
John 14:15 "IF you Love Me KEEP My Commandments"

Matt 19
And someone came to Him and said;Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life 17 And He said to him, Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments; 18 Then he *said to Him, Which ones? And Jesus said,
You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother;

and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself

"what matters is Keeping the Commandments of God" 1Cor 7:19

Matt 5
17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

"do we then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW" Rom 3:31

What law? The Law that condemns all mankind as sinners -

Rom 3

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

That same law - same chapter

"do we then make void the Law of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we ESTABLISH the LAW" Rom 3:31

Matt 22 "On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Luke 16:16 "The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it."

Any part of scripture read could fall under that title.

Acts 13:15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

=================================

Rom 7
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

Rom 13
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this,
Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Thou shalt not covet;

and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

James 2
8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, ou shall love your neighbor as yourself, (Lev 19:18) you are doing well.
9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
11 For He who said,
Do not commit adultery
also said,
Do not commit murder.
Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty

Not according to the Bible - in the case of the wicked Jews.

In Romans 2 Paul says the wicked ones were breaking the LAW of God and as a result "the name of God is blasphemed among the gentiles because of you".

Of course Paul is not an example of one those kind of Jew.
Paul is discussing the spiritual requirements of the law, and not the written requirements of the Ten Commandments. He is making the distinction between the letter of the law and the spiritual requirements of the law:

Romans 2:12-15:
"All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts..."

Paul is showing that righteousness is not obtained by obeying the letter of the law. He is showing that Gentiles can be declared righteous by obeying the spiritual requirements of the law from the heart even though they do not have, or were given, the written law of Ten Commandment.

"If you Love Me KEEP My Commandments" John 14:15
Those scriptures say "keep my commandments."
They do not say "keep my ten commandments."

A commandment is simply a divine rule.
Every command that Jesus gives is a divine rule and is therefore a commandment.
And Jesus is not restricted to ten commandments, or divine rules, like you are.

Until you read the actual Bible --

Do you mean you have corrected Christ ???

Joh 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

I have seen "bait-and-switch" before, but I have never seen it used to correct the words of Christ...

Or the Apostle John...

1Jn 3:22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

1Jn 3:23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

1Jn 3:24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

What version of the Bible are you reading?

Different sets of commandments, Bob...

.

Until you read the actual Bible --

James 2
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture,You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;
9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by THE Law as transgressors.

Matt 19
And someone came to Him and said;Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life 17 And He said to him, Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments; 18 Then he *said to Him, Which ones? And Jesus said,
You shall not commit murder;
You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal;
You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother;

and
You shall love your neighbor as yourself

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

=================================

9 For this,
Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not bear false witness,
Thou shalt not covet;

and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

If you have a Christ that is opposed to those Bible texts quoted in this post -- then you might want to read 2 Corinthians 11 while paying attention to details.

2 Corinthians 11:4 . 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

As for me - I am going to stick with the Bible on this topic

And that includes believing Christ in his Mark 7:6-13 statement
That includes believing Christ in Matt 19 statement above.

He is opposed to anyone who takes scripture out of context for the purpose of promoting a man-made doctrine.

Quoting 1 John 5:1-4, but then ignoring 1 John 3:22-24 is one of many examples.

Gal 4:24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—

Gal 4:25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children—

Gal 4:30 Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? "CAST OUT THE BONDWOMAN AND HER SON, FOR THE SON OF THE BONDWOMAN SHALL NOT BE HEIR WITH THE SON OF THE FREEWOMAN."

Gal 4:31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.
