In Matthew 5:32, why does Jesus make the statement: Whoever divorces his wife makes her practice adultery, and whoever a divorced woman marries is practicing adultery.
All of this is explained in chapter 19:

The KJV Bible With Strong's References:

Matthew 19

19:1
And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
19:2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful * for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be * one flesh?
19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away ?
19:8 He saith unto them *, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
19:9 And I say unto you *, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
19:10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
19:11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
19:12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselveseunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

It goes a step further then this. Did you see the movie Yentel? A story about a women that has to dress up like a man because she wants to get a religious education. The honor of a women is in being a mother. Not only are they to “Be fruitful and multiply.” They are to ensure that children are born in purity and holiness, with pure hearts and minds that will enable them to resist temptation and avoid the pitfalls of the environment when they grow up. A virtuous woman takes good care of her home and she makes sure everyone's needs are provided for. She works late into the night and rises early in the morning.

This strays significantly from the OP but I thought this would be an interesting aside to debate.

The following was a situation at work.

A man had cheated on his wife while away on a business trip. He had been married 14 years, had two children, and more or less had a good marriage. Long story short, it was the first time in his life a woman had ever thrown herself at him. He was at the hotel bar and she basically just came on to him, they talked for a couple of hours and then she asked him if he'd like to continue the conversation in her room where it was more private and that was that. Didn't even know her full name.

Afterwards he felt guilty and swore he would never do it again.

now here is where the debate comes in. He was confiding in me and one other coworker, we his best friends. It had been months since this one-night-stand affair and he wanted to come clean to his wife and confess.

I argued vehemently that he should just take it to the grave, tell no one, don't tell his wife, and that absolutely no good would/could come of him telling his wife. I argued that if he truly was never going to do it again (which he swore and I believe) that it serves no use or utility to tell his wife. That it can only be harmful.

however, the other coworker argued that unless he tells the wife, then their entire marriage is a lie... and that the wife has to know...

So, basically, my question is in regards to those who feel that he must tell his wife. I guess I honestly don't understand the logic behind it. I feel it is a response based on social conditioning. Yet, if you really stop and think about it, he should not tell the wife when there is no way she would find out otherwise. So what good can come of it

I realize my viewpoint will be the minority viewpoint in a Christian forum but I thought it'd be an interesting topic to debate...

I suppose that scenario would be a matter of personal accountability, and the scripture that comes to my mind is the one that says we should confess our sins to one another, for healing and accountability, otherwise if we keep them secret then I think it becomes a foothold for the Devil that he can use against us. Also if the secret info is thought to be safe, there is always the unseen possibility that the info will be revealed in some other way, and that revelation would be more damaging than the confession.

Because men wrote the bible.

I believe like it says, men inspired by the Spirit of God wrote the Bible, so I guess it depends on whether or not you actually believe it. Everyone has faith in something, its just those who recognize truth can find their way to the small door.

This part of the scripture makes such a strong case for the permanent and immutable quality of marriage from the very beginning to the present.

so I guess it depends on whether or not you actually believe it.
Therefore, I don't believe it.
Everyone has faith in something,
I'm not so sure this is accurate.
its just those who recognize truth
And what's the best way to "recognize truth"?
can find their way to the small door.
That's the thing about truths, they are where you find them.

I am not saying anything. We are talking about what Kabbalah and the Bible has to say about this subject. Maybe this video will help you to understand.

That's exactly what I said, you're hiding behind ancient patriarchal misogynistic texts to justify your discrimination. Welcome to 2016.

Keep in mind Jesus was answering their question. In their question the man was divorcing his wife. Therefore it would make sense in that context that Jesus would frame his answer in that fashion. Since the man is divorcing her she would be committing adultery.

As Joshua 19 shares Jesus expands the thought to cover everyone not just the woman later in Matthew.

Proverbs doesn't in any way say that. The woman in that verse is very industrious. She works very hard. Keep in mind that in Those days work and employment were very different. Women didn't go to an office or business to work. They made things and sold them. Self employed. God also appreciated women who took care of their homes and families. The feminist movement began to look down on women who wanted to do that. God elivates them. Women don't have to do it be one or the other. Its ok to be what they want and that can be both.

No where in scripture does God command that women stay home and be barefoot and pregnant.

It is tragic how the state of women has deteriorated in this country over the past 75 years due to conditioning by the federalized, socialized public school system coupled with the apostatized socialized, feminized religious organizations. Conditioning that causes great confusion, and makes it very hard for a person to find the truth. The feminist Eleanor Roosevelt, and her socialist husband had a lot to do with this propagation in the thirtys' and fourtys'. If they could only see the devastation that they helped to create.

Right?! It was much better when they couldn't vote and could be owned as property.

It appears. You misunderstood. The feminist movement went too far in making women feel, like they were 2nd class women of they stayed home. That's what I was referring to. You,were jumping to some pretty big conclusions.

Women ought to,be able to work and vote and own, property etc. But they ought to be able to choose to not work outside the home as well and still be honored just as highly.

Honor and nobility are things that are not valued as highly now as they used to be, and I think it is important to remember that just because someone can do something does not necessarily mean that they should do that thing, there will always be Godly order, and those that are led by the Spirit will be sensitive to it, women that have chosen to be wives and mothers can find no greater spiritual fulfillment than in the home. Because the home is our ministry, our neighborhoods are our outreach, and our forum is the world. Home-Making is a full time job, any variance has no choice but to breed neglect.

Is this what your pastor told you?
No, I don't have a pastor, but I was simply trying to make a point that men and women are two completely different creatures, created to fulfill two completely different roles and yet they compliment one another. When the roles are mixed or reversed it encourages confusion and conflict, but all this is quite obvious to those who are familiar with divine order. Love is the key to success, but where there is selfish ambition, there is every evil thing.
