  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

People you have admired in life.....

For me, Atticus Finch, the lawyer character in To Kill a Mockingbird is the perfect role-model for those of us who aspire to Catholicism with a conscience. Courage in the face of adversity, be willing to support those without a voice, suffer unpopularity and at the same time be the loving parent.

You're not the only one- I had a teacher in at the Catholic middle school I attended as a youngster who really loved To Kill a Mockingbird.

After that, I would go with Angelo Roncalli, Pope John XXIII. When I think about it, he was a lot like my grandmother.

Yes , Good Pope John must be on my list .

Pope John XXIII ......

Kenn Kauffman, birder and author. Kenn dropped out of high school at age 16 and hitchhiked his way around the United States trying to see as many birds as he could. At age 19 he nearly set the North American record for a Big Year (671), extraordinary in that he spent only few thousand dollars and most of that for airfare to remote Aleutian islands.

Here's to Kenn and the relentless pursuit of his passion.

I love both Atticus Finch and Gregory Peck. The actor is always associated with the role in my mind. Yet, I had never seen of/heard of the book until I moved to the U.S. Finch is all that is decent and good in a person.

I have the utmost admiration for Maya Angelou. I saw her on Oprah's "Masterclass" and was fascinated and starstruck by her. The open way that she spoke about the awful things that had happened to her, and to others around her was breathtaking. All of these sad/hard events had occurred but she was not ever beaten down by them because she was stronger than they were. I was so very sad when she died because I felt like she still had so much to say.

There are a number of female writers who have written about depression and, I believe, brought the condition forward into the light through literary means. One was Antonia White, a little known British writer (also a Catholic), and Sylvia Plath. I had experienced depression prior to reading A Bell Jar, and could never describe to anyone the "feeling." But when I read Plath's description of "the bell jar" it made it easier for me to talk about my experiences. I find Antonia White's series of novels quite stunning. I have read them several times and always with a sense of wonder. These women really bared their souls to bring the topic of mental illness into the public sphere.

Another favorite of mine is Carl Rogers, the founder of person-centered therapy. It is by far one of my "favorite" forms of counseling (my Master's degree is in counseling). It encourages mutual respect and mutual commitment to the process of counseling. I won't describe it any more because it's easy to look up. I have seen many videos of this counseling process, and have learned much about it. I've tried to incorporate parts of it into the way I interact with others - which is easier in person than on the internet for obvious reasons. Rogers was a great guy, and if you can ever get hold of any of the videos that show him working with people using this therapy, you might enjoy it. There are just *lightbulbs* popping on for people all the time. I love it. :)

I've started a Masters in Counselling but wont finish due to cost and no guarantee of job. So I did some Intro units, including on Carl Rogers, and all the other approaches including Gestalt and Irvin Yalom. Fascinating stuff. It makes me wonder about the serious Catholics who counsel. Do they use their knowledge and faith in the job? I'm getting too old to ever become a counsellor unfortunately but the whole subject interests me. Freud and Jung were good. I think Jung was on to something but apparently he has been criticised for being a borderline cult leader.

Plus they look great . ;)

Especially #11, Julie Foudy. She's got a great attitude too. She's still involved with youth soccer, and announces a few games. And,.....I have a hunch she's Catholic.
