Does the world hate us because of Jesus or because of the way we treat them?

"Ultimately, many Christians end up hated - not because of Jesus - but because we are too often jerks and completely unwilling to look at our own behavior."

That observation is not limited to Christians.
But Christianity does still have a problem with
throwing stones at prostitutes.

10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"
11She said, "No one, Lord."
And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either.

The answer to your question is that Christians are hated for both, I understand what the author was trying to do and that he is talking about "aggressive evangelism" but to say that Christian will only be hated by political authorities and religious conservative gatekeepers is an overgeneralization.

The world hates us because the world hates. Don't take it personally, and don't search too hard for your fault. It's a mistake to assume that everyone's feelings are valid. Most people aren't that rational.

And there's something about the real Jesus that always pushed peoples' buttons. He really got under the Pharisees' skin. Any Jesus that the world finds agreeable is not the genuine article.

Sad to say the article was spot on.

“I like your Christ; I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

And Gandhi wasn't a Christian. He wasn't a righteous man. People need to stop making Gandhi out to be righteous. He wasn't.

In what way was Gandhi not righteous in his behavior and his beliefs? Nobody thinks he was a Christian, btw.

So people should not engage in any self search to see whether they did harm. Interesting. But you are rational I suppose, one of the few.
Jesus put love first. Perhaps Christians should try that a little more.

The Word is clear that children of God are not loved by the world.

Righteousness IS in Christ. Since he was not in Christ, he was not righteous.

There is no righteousness apart from God. What did Gandhi's behavior's profit him?
Gandhi's lifelong quest to free his people from the cruel rule of British overlords did not benefit him, but it did benefit subsequent generations. Why would you think it Christian for anyone to seek to benefit themselves?

No one has said such.
The person I was responding to said that people shouldn't try to hard to find their own fault! That does not sound like Christianity to me. Soul-searching and consideration of one's behavior is a part of Christianity, to my knowledge.

It doesn't matter, as it says in John I think, it doesn't matter if you dance to their music or don't dance, they will find fault with you. Some of the truly great people I know are humble Christians. People of the world follow the accuser of the brethren, Satan. They find fault and paint with a broad and unfair brush. Not that many Christian don't have lot's of faults and could use more grace and less judgement. In the end they will hate us because of Christ regardless of how some act. Also the media paints a false picture of Christianity constantly. This has gotten steadily much worse in just my lifetime.
There is a great dividing going in now. Christians have to get real about being Christians, and many will come under the spell of the secular church as many dominations already have.
If you are an accuser of the Brethern as one poster seems to be, you should maybe reflect on your own feelings. Who or what do you love? Or is it just hate?
Many will say, I did this or that in your name, but he will say, Go away, I never knew you.

But I don't think we need to try to help Jesus fulfill that prophecy by treating non Christians badly.

Who is treating non Christians badly?

Christians are to love even enemies. Part of loving even your enemies is sharing the truth of the gospel.

Sharing the truth of the gospel for those who are not saved is what we are to do.

During Christianity's early stages Christians were hated because they were themselves believed to be haters of mankind and the gods. Haters of mankind because of their refusal to participate in the things common to mankind that were of the world and haters of the gods because they declared them all false and chose to worship only one.

Interestingly and ironically, today we have Christians hating Christians due to nationalistic reasons and denominational differences reasons among other things.

Dear chandraclaws. God is Love and Jesus gave us two Commandments. ( Matthew 22: 35-40:) The first and great Commandment is: "Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it:
love thy neighbour as thyself." In verse 40 we are told: On these two Commandments hang all the Law and all the Prophets. God wants our love, freely given and NO conditions made. We start with asking God for Love and Joy, then thank God and share all love and joy with our neighbour. ( Matthew 7: 7-10) We keep asking for Love and Joy, then thank God and share all love and joy with our neighbour. ( neighbour is all we know and all we meet, friends and not friends)
The Bible tells us: " Repent and be Born Again," we change from being selfish and unloving to love and care, be kind and always use loving and kind words. Love is very catching, and we will find that people will treat us, as we treat people, and gradually we will change to loving and caring. We might stumble and forget at times, but then we ask God to forgive us, and carry on be loving and kind. We will be surprised what love can do.
Hate and unkind behaviour starts with the evil one and his followers, and we all know that Satan and his kind will flee from all love and kindness and forgiving. The world will not hate us if we are kind and loving, on the contrary the world at large will join us. Love and forgiveness will change this imperfect world into a much better world, we will enjoy life, as God wants us to live it. I say this with love, chandraclaws. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

We all need a reality check, but we need to be aware of a false check. We answer to God, and we should examine ourselves in the light of the Bible and of the Holy Spirit.

There is a Judge, but men cannot judge us.

Men cannot judge us, but there is a Judge.

Christians can also be hated for pointing out what non Christian might be considering OK behavior..
A person engaged in habitual lying, stealing, adultery, physical violence, drug abuse, etcetera might perceive those who criticize the behavior as pompously self-righteous, hypocritical and antagonistic.
