  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

LDS Why do Mormons think all Christians are in apostasy?

And that one woman should be silent in church.

This quotation, which Paul is attributed, is taken out of context. It was not about the women to prohibit the talking, but talking during services. Because these women at that time had the habit to bring by heckling and questions, the speaker out of the concept. In addition, the known world was dominated patriarchal. Women had nothing to say, were the object, not the subject. They should therefore, if they wanted to know something, ask their husbands. And another thing: In the early Church of Christ, which it has as Mormons imagine never existed, were women deacons, bishops, apostles. Some, like Junia, are mentioned by name (in the list of greetings of Paul at the end of Romans).

*notes the crickets in response to that one*

Yeah, if we're going hardcore into the Pauline epistles then it's sinful to have women as ministers.

...Unless, of course, someone wants to try and explain how *that* portion of Paul's words don't apply...

I hate it when someone misused the Bible to oppress people.

You missed my point.

I was trying to get people to explain why some portions of Paul's instructions must be adhered to as if they were another gospel while others are quietly ignored.

I see. You mean the "pick and choose" of some Christians. To understand the Bible, one must remember three things: the textual and historical context, as well as the meaning of the original words. For translations can contain errors. All things considered, you understand what and why a Bible author says something, and if we can apply it to the present day.
I dislike, for example, that many US Chisten very often use quotations from the Old Testament, especially the 5 books of Moses, although the rules of Moses through the Atonement of Christ, according to the Galatians, written by Paul; have been fulfilled.

The Levitical, sacrificial system was fulfilled in Christ. We are under the New Covenant, spoken of in the OT. The OT is still the foundation of Christianity--it is what Christ and His disciples studied and it the the OT through which all new Christians were brought to Christianity for the NT had not yet been written, just the letters were going around. Without the OT there is no idea about what is fulfilled and there are still prophecies in the OT that have not yet been fulfilled. It is the OT that this is referring to:

2Ti_2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

It is the OT that testifies of the creation of the world and there is a God that did it. Without the OT, there is no basis for the NT.

God gave the people at all times commandments and directives. Adam and Eve that they should multiply. Abraham, the obedience carries its own reward (which is not the one meant, what German mentioned "Kadavergehorsam" (blind obedience) And Noah Noah, learned to be obey Sometimes these commandments and guidelines were the same, sometimes similar, and sometimes totally different. Because God considered the circumstances.
About a prophet: A prophet must satisfy three things (according to the Bible):
Firstly, it must be called by God. Secondly, it must be able to predict future events. And third, these things have to meet. Smith made many prophecies, but not one of them was fulfilled!

The tablets weren't destroyed. They were carried in the Ark of the Covenant for a long time.

Why do you think they were destroyed?

Maybe he even has the "Inspired Version" of Joseph Smith? The Bible, which Smith has partially "translated"; although he did nether know Greek nor Hebrew, although he claimed that by himself.
