I desire to do the will of God, whatever that is. God's will is revealed in but not exclusively the Gospel according to Matthew. It is also revealed in other three gospels, the rest of the NT, and the OT.

Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

That is one of my favorite passages. The blessedness of possessing nothing but God alone is something God even now is working in me to desire.

This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them. Jeremiah 32:42

First, a willingness to do the will of God must be present within one's soul before one can know whether or not the things that Christ has said are true.

Jesus was speaking to a man who had many possessions.

The pertinent passage is below, from which you quoted a mere portion:

And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” 21Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Jesus in essence is saying to anyone with ears to hear, that whatever it is that you are clinging to, whatever it is that is precious and irreplaceable to you, whatever it is that you think is worth more than following Jesus, it is that very thing that you must be willing to renounce if you are to be His disciple.

For some like the rich young man it is possessions, for some it is a relationship or a dear loved one, for some it is prestige, for some honor, for some power, for some the envy of others, for some their position, for some their job, for some their self-sufficiency, for some their pride, for some their autonomy, for some their sexual passions and desires, for some their unforgiveness towards someone who hurt them. The self life is the source of all these things and it is the cross which Jesus said was the remedy.

So when I do hesitate to pick up my cross daily and die to myself, Christ gives me grace, if I have no other desire than to do what is pleasing in His sight. I have walked this road of renunciation and it is the most blessed of paths.
