Ya.One of the biggest reasons we have pollution is because of religion. Engineering may have created a machine to be built to do some kind of work, but the person paying for it is the one who didn't care about the pollution it created.
Now you could argue this is a product of capitalism or corporatism, but much like climate change, pollution, a mountain of plastic in the oceans, it takes a mentality of ignoring reality on Earth. When you have a religious doctrine that nothing in the material world matters, and only the supernatural, jeebus jeebus jeebus, heaven and hell, and nothing on Earth really matters, why would you care how much about how much you destroy?
Mix the Christian mindset and the industrial age and you created an entire mentality of other people don't matter, exploit everyone and anything you want, because all that matters is the after life. Sure, get on your knees now and pray, give some money to the church to buy your way in, but nothing here matters so destroy all you want. Climate change? I'll be in heaven by then. Workers dying on toxic waste? They'll go to heaven. Water supply being poisoned? Who cares.
You can always tell a born again highway patrolman from one who isn't.
Just throw a couple of bags of McDonald's trash out the window as you pass one and see if he chases you.
