  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Lucas wanted his trilogies to "rhyme" but never really managed to convey this apart from visual cues that often made very limited sense ("why does Chancellor Palpatine sit on a throne here?" "Oh, that droid control ship is supposed to be a stand-in for the death star, and "press random buttons"-boy is basically Luke").
There were aspects of the prequels that did seem very enjoyable, as I did enjoy "The Clone Wars" and the concepts behind them. The series with Star Wars and others like Ventress, in example, were quite wonderful.

And there were so many other things besides that:)

Although I did not get into the cartoon series that Cartoon Network made later on (which introduced Ahsoka and other memorable characters), I have to say that the series itself was rather beautiful in how much it made the Clone Wars far more epic than many originally thought. The expanded universe was always more interesting than the movie prequels discussing the same topic.

I can totally see it now! Makes me want to go play Shogun Total War!
There really is an honor code that can be seen throughout the Star Wars films once you understand the way the Samurai culture was present throughout. That said, in anticipation of The Force Awakens hitting theaters last week, filmmakers Oscar Boyson and Nate DeYoung teamed up and created a video for Time Magazine that explores what makes the Star Wars film series so special.

I was avoiding this tread until I saw the movie (trying to avoid as many spoilers as possible).

Things I like about the new film....

- TIE Fighters with rear gunners, shields and a hyperdrive! As an old TIE Fighter pilot back in the DOS days, I really appreciated that.

I remember when X-Wing came out for the PC and it was amazing. Flying in Battlefront today is so much fun.

With the maneuverability of those TIEs I would think a rear gunner would have a terrible time hitting anything...but then, it's not like they could hit anything anyway. I wondered why the TIE pilots need to wear that helmet which would just obscure their view (even more than the hull does) since Poe and Finn didn't need helmets.

- Kylo Ren's lightsaber. I like how it's not perfect. This isn't a Sith Lord. He's kinda an amateur when it comes to the force but it works so well with his character. His lightsaber flickers and looks like it will go out. In the book it's called a 'butcher's blade' or an executioners weapon.

I have mixed feelings about Kylo, himself. He seemed kind of neat at first but then he's turns into this whiny goth kid. At least they tried to give Anakin a tragic backstory, but what's this guy's excuse for joining the dark side?

A standard TIE fighter didn't have life support systems. The Special Forces ones are equipped with those systems now I assumes seeing how they now have hyperdrive and shields.

Ah, but when the TIEs are chasing Rey in the Falcon, the pilots are still wearing the helmets.
(I prefer them with the helmets)

That was my biggest beef as well. I was wondering how in the world it was the case that Anakin himself was somehow referenced by the man when Anakin resisted joining the Dark Side in the End and repented. I thought the man did not want to study history.

The shields and hyperdrive? Just with these new Special Forces TIE Fighters in the new movie. It's on Wookiepedia.

The old TIE's were considered 'death traps' as they had no shields or life support.

I think Kylo would have been more interesting if we just a nobody Darth Vader fanboy who could use the force. Kind of like a delusional Neo Nazi.

The son of Solo aspect did make things stand out a bit. I think a lot of people wanted the movie to be just like the old one but it's a new generation and you can't recreate everything.

And many said they wished he kept his mask on.

Probably not widely known and considered a lie. The only person who saw Anakin came around to the light side again was Luke. When Kylo went against Luke he probably told himself Luke was lying.

I actually like Kylo alot. I liked how he was 'dark' and actively trying to stay dark. He even mentioned he was being seduced by the 'light'. Kinda a cool reversal from the past movies where the darkside was the seducer.

Either way I think he will be a different cat in the next movie. After doing what he did and then getting owned by a noob force user you know he is going fully darkside now with some serious anger and guilt.

I don't know how that can occur when Anakin could appear as a Spirit along with Ben and Yoda when they died. The Solos would have told their child the truth and it's not like you can't see others with the force.

Nonetheless, the reverse seduction was very interesting and I like his trying to resist the light :)

Just look at real life. People find it easy to glance over certain details when they want to see someone in a certain way. Not sure about the force ghosts. Maybe Kylo/Ben didn't see them. Although I know it's not 'canon' anymore, I remember a book that mentioned the longer someone was dead, the less powerful their 'force ghost' became until eventually it was gone. Who know!? :D

That's a good point with the Force Ghost fading given enough time. And indeed, people can glance over details.

I am not certain if Kylo can be redeemed.

I thought it was very much like the original trilogy; kind of like they smashed all of them together. I think that works OK for the first movie in a trilogy, like a hand off, but I hope they come up with some more original stuff for 8

And many said they wished he kept his mask on.

Or at least put it back on after the scene with Han.

I thought Ray was very original and the First Order concept was wild. If they end up having the Empire itself reformed and having a good queen or empress over it, that would be wild.
