  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why then do scientists, when it comes to the Bible, start with conclusions then ... stop there?
I don't think they do any such thing. Scientists read the Bible passages in their appropriate genres and go from there. They try to square what they read with what they know about the universe, the same as you do.

Some Popes accept evolution, others believe in creationism.

Except that Benedict was the one who declared it virtually inarguable, and Francis is perpetuating that..

That doesn't matter anyway. I was being a bit brash, it's just disappointing to a creationist to see the majority of Catholics simply fall into theistic evolution over that.

Would you rather they ignore all of the evidence and pretend it doesn't exist?

O.H. I believe in an old earth , but there is an aspect of the process of 'evolution ' which
is illusionary .God did not create us by evolution ,but as is described in Genesis ,and there is a large part missing to fill in the complete picture .
We have an overabundance of evidence from biology, geology, genetics, anthropology, etc etc etc that proves evolution. Sure we don't know everything. Who says we do? But we do know we evolved as surely as we know the speed of light.

I wonder if these folks know, when they go to the doctor, they could be treated based on medical advances based on evolutionary theory?

I'm an old Earth creationist, believing an ancient universe and world where there were more than simply the several mass extinctions of life that evolutionists posit. I have my own grand design in mind without evolution, and I don't 'pretend the evidence doesn't exist'. I simply conclude with something different from the 'evidence'.

You are free to conclude whatever you like, with the evidence.

Others, can do the same.

Well the Catholic Church has a pretty mundane and unsatisfactory defense, stating simply that the souls of men were created separate and put into the vessels of otherwise modern men.

Doesn't suffice for me. It's too convenient.

So what does that mean? How old do you think the universe is? Do you think it was all created in 6 literal 24 hour days? Just not like 10000 years ago like those other creationists believe? What evidence has made you come to these conclusions

I disagree.

If by "appropriate genre," you mean, "back then," then that's [one of] their mistake.

The Bible is "quick" ...

Hebrews 4:12a For the word of God is quick,

Meaning It is always up-to-date.

Thus scientists who fail to employ general relativity to their interpretation of ...

Joshua 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

... are ... well ... scientists.

Yes indeedy not.
Open Heart said:

Um ... no.

Not even close.

In fact, they ridicule my method.

Are you familiar with my Boolean standards and my Prime Directive?

(If you were, you wouldn't have said that.)

I'm curious to see now how they react to what you just said.

So I've heard.

In my last visit to my doctor, a Christian, I asked him if he believes in evolution, and he said YES.

The Big Bang was hypothesized by a theologian and astrophysicist priest. Of course, this is buried under the secular bias- Darwin is the founder of evolution, Newton discovered laws of gravity, Galileo is the founder of modern science.. but the mention of the founder of the Big Bang is left out.

It's not a coincidence.

Genesis is not written as, or intended to be a literal history. I've always been bemused by the fact that it was ever thought to be literal in the first place. It's like taking poetry and turning it into math.
However, the Creation event is not arbitrary. There is relevance in which both evolution and young Earth creationism make a mockery of, and that is my opinion on the matter.

Well yeah.
[sarcasm] I'm so thankful doctors believe we are mutant, copy-errors, made in the image & likeness of God back around 197,985 BC. If not for that, I couldn't have gotten my medication. [/sarcasm]

Well yeah, that stuff I do already know. Agree with that analogy for sure. I just hadn't heard of a old earth creation b4. So that means you agree with scientists on the age of the universe & you don't think everything was created in 6 days? The thing you don't agree on is evolution?
