Hmm... Holland, Michigan is about 100 miles from Chicago across the lake. So 20 times 8" would be 160 inches or about 13 feet. I'm pretty sure that there are several buildings in Chicago higher that.
It's about 23 miles. So anything higher than 3 feet would be visible from there.
Actually, it's only at the equator, that it's that fast. Gets slower as you go north. That's why they launch satellites as close to the equator as they can get. If you launch them eastward, they gain the kinetic energy from the Earth's rotation, and you can put larger payloads into orbit.
