  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Should Christians take up arms ?

There is no such coinage as 'hyper-grace' and exaggerated understanding! Can I call that charismatic understanding?
Clearly your settled in an opinion I would possibly call gnostic. But how I define it doesn't matter. There is not much else for me to add. Thanks for the conversation.

Jesus said to Peter 'Sell your cloak and buy a sword'.
This is presumably because, on the road, they would need to protect themselves from highwaymen or those who opposed their messiah.

God does not say one cannot carry arms. However, with arms comes a lot of responsibility and accountability if they should ever be used.
To say the obvious, if you read the Bible, God is NOT a pacifist. To say the least.

Do we no longer believe (have faith that) God protects us?
This sounds like the person sitting on top of a house with the water rising praying for God to protect them. A boat comes by and the person says, "God will protect me" and doesn't enter the boat when the flood waters begin overtaking the house. I guess if a person wants to say, well it was my time to go, fine. I'll take the boat and you can tell me how much I must not trust God to protect me.

I'll help you out Paul was beaten many times during his ministry, beaten unconciseness even and never hit back or protected him self. God may have protect him from being killed but not beaten, yet Paul took it. Some are strong enough to take a beaten and go right back in and preach again as Paul did, and yet some are not strong enough to do that. Do not tell the weak they are wrong or the strong, they are of the same body no? God says there is a season for everything. So there is a time to protect and time not to and take the beating. Seems so silly like those who follow the food laws telling those who are strong and don't they are wrong. A child of God is wrong when he believes he should not do it. One Mind

Maybe God sent the boat?

Of course He did.

So maybe change that "but" to "so" ;)

James 4:14-15 New International Version (NIV)

14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

I think you miss the connection. The Lord said He will provide for all of my needs. But just because He said that does not mean I do not have to go to work every day.

He also said He is our protector. But does that mean I don't buy a house? Does that mean that I don't wear a seatbelt, or make my kids wear theirs? Or if someone is attacking my family, I just let them?

I would say that in the same way God provided my job, he also provides my house, seatbelts, and the means to defend my family.

No, I understand the connection you're trying to make, but understanding that the Lord provides opportunities does not remove His Sovereignty. He knows if you're going to take an opportunity before it's even presented to you ;)

I think we need to draw some lines here. There is a big difference in "protecting your family from an attacker" and "protecting your family from an attacker with deadly force."

What if the attacker was your drug fueled son or daughter? How would you react then? Would your first instinct be to use deadly force, or another method of deterrence?

i'd throw a net over them and then confuse them with cold water.
