  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

My area has a very large Dutch community and a lot of greenhouses and such. You should visit Niagara, you'd be right at home:) We even have these really ugly windmills that the government thinks is a good source of energy:p Perhaps Canadian Dutch families have slightly different traditions than you do in Holland. It's the same with Italians living in U.S./Canada. I noticed quite a difference when I was in Italy.

Are you sure they're not Deutsch?

in some parts of the USA, they very early German settlers are called "Dutch" like "Pennsylvania Dutch" because the German word for German is Deutsch and this got them stuck with the name Dutch

Dutch and Deutsch sound very similar. I can pronounce them differently, but I can't explain how.

Texas has a big German population as well. We're a lot different than those that settle in Pennsylvania, but in some parts of Texas you can see heavy German influence. The were German-only speaking churches as late as the 1940s in parts of Texas. It's how I'm mostly of German ancestry, and not like many Americans "a little Irish, a little English, a little German, a little Italian, etc." When I was in Germany last summer, a couple of us were talking with a German who was basically saying Americans are starting to look like their own ethnic group, and kind of went through our group and said if we looked more American or European.

Ugly windmills, that must be Dutch lol.
Originally some went to some coast areas but since 1950 a lot went to Canada.
Today almost 400,000 people of Dutch ancestry are registered as permanently living in Canada. About 130,000 Canadians were born in the Netherlands and there are another 600,000 Canadian citizens with at least one Dutch parent.

Ugh... man, solicitors woke me up. They knocked, went away, then came back and I answered. At least I got 6 hours of sleep.

I wonder if its legal to open the door and just blast them with a Super Soaker. :D

Of all the people to be able to get away with sincerely claiming assault, probably not the best ones to try it on ;)

Grrr, so this is what that tickle in the back of my throat was yesterday.

I cant tell if cold or sinus infection. It moved past the tickle and started snoting all over the place. I feel like Bill Murray in Ghostbusters after seeing Slimer.

I think thats the worst part of getting sick IMO, its not that my nose doesnt feel right. Its that I become disgusting (or feel it anyway). :(
