  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mohamed Soltan, the young American citizen, has today been sentenced to life in prison in Egypt.

"Reuters notes: 'Egypt's mass trials of Brotherhood members and people accused of links to the group, as well as its tough crackdown on Islamist and liberal opposition alike, have drawn international criticism of its judicial system and human rights record.'"

Egyptian Court Sentences U.S. Citizen To Life In Prison : The Two-Way : NPR

U.S. Department of State's press statement:

"The U.S. government is deeply disappointed in the Egyptian court’s decision in the case of U.S. citizen Mohamed Soltan. We understand from reports that Mr. Soltan has been sentenced to life in prison.

We remain deeply concerned about Mr. Soltan’s health and detention. The United States reiterates our call for the release of Mr. Soltan on humanitarian grounds, and we urge the Government of Egypt to redress this verdict."

The Conviction of Mr. Mohamed Soltan

American Mohamed Soltan Sentenced to Life in Prison in Egypt After Protests - NBC News

Mohamed Soltan's sister:

"Our family is both horrified and deeply saddened by the sentence handed out in Cairo today condemning my brother to life in prison. While we have always placed absolutely zero faith in the ability of a deeply politicized Egyptian judiciary to consider Mohamed's case fairly, we still held out hope that some semblance of the rule of law would win out and Mohamed would be released. As today's sentencing shows, it clearly did not.

Now that the Egyptian judiciary has once again shown their true colors for the world to see, we again repeat our calls on the U.S. Government to facilitate a humanitarian release for Mohamed. As casual and close observers of Mohamed's case alike have noted from day one, this is an eminently political case and the only solution for Mohamed will be obtained politically."

"Technically, freedom of religion is enshrined in the constitution of Tajikistan. But in reality, religious practice–at least for members of the country’s Muslim majority–is tightly controlled by the state. In recent months, Tajikistan has furthered steadied its grip on the practice of Islam with the president commenting on proper attire, reports of forced beard-shavings, and new regulations on who can travel to Mecca on hajj."

"As in the other former Soviet republics of Central Asia, the government of Tajikistan is fiercely secular while the people are mostly Muslim."

12 Christians were thrown overboard on a bot from Libya to Italy by Muslims.
Muslim migrants threw Christians overboard, police say - CNN.com

The original group of 105 people left Libya on Tuesday in a rubber boat. Sometime during the trip north across the Mediterranean Sea, the alleged assailants -- Muslims from the Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal -- threw the 12 overboard, police said.
Other people on the voyage told police that they themselves were spared "because they strongly opposed the drowning attempt and formed a human chain," Palermo police said.

Let's pray for the families of those who were thrown overboard, pray for those Muslims, so that their heart might turn to God and repent, and pray for others who just watched so that they know right from wrong.

I remember reading something similar for Uzbekistan. Will post later if I find it.

"The Uzbek government has arrested and tortured thousands of nonviolent Muslim dissidents who practice their faith outside state-controlled religion, Human Rights Watch said today in a report on this campaign of religious persecution."

"The Uzbek government is conducting a merciless campaign against peaceful Muslim dissidents," said Rachel Denber, acting executive director of Human Rights Watch’s Europe and Central Asia Division. "The scale and brutality of the operations against independent Muslims make it clear that these are part of a concerted and tightly-orchestrated campaign of religious persecution."

"Authorities in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region have ordered shop owners and restaurateurs in a mainly Muslim Uyghur village to sell alcohol and cigarettes or face closure of their establishments, despite a public backlash against the products discouraged by followers of Islam, an official source said."

The last two posts are merely two examples of the world's reaction to a religion that has lost credibility faster than a bolt of lightning. Every where there is Islam, there is trouble.

The fact Muslims are being persecuted proves they are trouble-makers?

Nope. It's just a reaction of the world that is to be expected when trust of a group of people gets lost. Blame the radicals for making it hard on everyone. It's simple really- in every nation on earth where there is a Muslim majority there problems with violence in the name of Islam- in most cases by the few. Now that this threat is boiling over into non-Muslim countries and manifesting, the natural reaction is to put pressure on the Muslim community at large- because trust is lost or at least being eroded. But Muslims only have themselves and their rather ambiguous foundations to blame.

Did you read that more Christians have been martyred this century at the hands of Muslims than in the 1stC and more died in the 20thC than in any other century?

But we all know- only Muslims can be victims. Christians deserve it (according to some on this forum)

You admit that the violence is done by a few yet you blame the entire Muslim community.

Might have something to do with the fact that Muslims didn't kill a single Christian in the first century. ;)

So states the person who when Muslims are persecuted insisted it was their own fault.

In Egypt seventy one Muslims received life sentences for torching a church.

Well, you can always stop using this forum to bash Islam, which is against the rules here anyhow.

How about you stop bashing Christianity? Constantly. How about you stop whitewashing the global war of Islamists against everyone else as somehow "misunderstood"?

And as for me "bashing" Islam- I haven't "bashed" it, I just tell it like it is- Islamists (a sect of Islam) are responsible for an awful lot of the world's pain right now. I know apologists and campaigners like yourself will deny it over and over- but it's really not fooling the rest of us. You know I'm right- every country in the world with a Muslim majority has problems with Islamists. Not one is now completely safe and clear. Terror cells plotting to kill people for not being "Muslim enough" in every single Muslim country. Blood, blood and more blood. The "religion of peace".

Wake up and snap out of it.

Naah, I only respond to the hypocrisy of your attacks on Islam.

No, it is not a sect of Islam. It is the use of Islam as a political ideology.

My problem with you is that even though you know it is a small minority of Muslims who are violent, you want blame Islam as a whole.

Naah, I only respond to the hypocrisy of your attacks on Islam.

I'd hardly call it hypocritical of me to point out the evil in the world.

No, it is not a sect of Islam. It is the use of Islam as a political ideology.

It is the political use of Islam- BY very religious Muslims. Therefore: a sect of Islam. And don't try to deny that these kooks are very religious. Their whole argument with other Muslims is that they aren't either Muslim enough or that they are heretical Muslims. Their whole argument against the rest of humanity is that they aren't Muslim to begin with. Therefore their own stated purpose is to spread their Islam throughout the world and to bring sharia upon us all. To them, they are the true Muslims. As an aside, I often wonder if there's even a good argument against that claim.

Secondly, are you going to deny in front of all of us that Islam doesn't have a political teaching and mission in its very core revelations?????

My problem with you is that even though you know it is a small minority of Muslims who are violent, you want blame Islam as a whole.

Then clearly, you aren't listening.

I said "It's just a reaction of the world that is to be expected when trust of a group of people gets lost. Blame the radicals for making it hard on everyone. It's simple really- in every nation on earth where there is a Muslim majority there problems with violence in the name of Islam- in most cases by the few." Pretty easy to comprehend, I would have thought. Especially for a professor.

Clearly, I pointed that Muslims are getting the blame for the actions of Islamists- do you disagree?

Does that make the Family a sect of Christianity?

There is a concern for community at the core of Islam.

Clearly, I pointed that Muslims are getting the blame for the actions of Islamists- do you disagree?

And you are the one doing the blaming.

"Authorities also imprison and fine Christians who conduct peaceful religious activities for administrative offenses, such as illegal religious teaching."

World Report 2014: Uzbekistan | Human Rights Watch

Those darn Christianists. Everywhere they go, they cause trouble. If it weren't for them, the moderate, peaceful Christians would be fine in Uzbekistan. But because of Christianists, the more moderate ones are persecuted by the Uzbek government (i.e. they brought it on themselves).

Interesting but futile use of hyperbole. Too bad so many of the countries Muslims are fleeing from others Muslims into have a Christian background, and there they find peace and the rule of law. How many a day now landing in Europe?

Also note that your article seems to suggest that the Christians are peaceful. No beheadings or executions noted.
