Do You "Know" A Person Of Another Race?

Do you know someone of another race?

  • I stick to my own race because that's what's comfortable for me.

  • I stick to my own race because I don't really have chances to interact with other races.

  • I know people of other races casually, I smile or say hello, but not in depth.

  • I know people of other races in depth, we're friends, family, or co-workers.

  • I'd like to know more people of other races if I had the chance.

  • I'm not interested in knowing more people of other races.

  • This thread is too serious. Let's have a disco ice cream party!

This thread stems from the "Farrakhan" thread over in News & Current Events. I hope he won't mind me mentioning him, but Dgiharris and I were discussing how many people have active, in-depth acquaintances with people of other races and ethnicities. Do we stick to our own color and culture by default? Do we simply say a passing "hello" to the people of another race in our workplaces, at church, etc? Dgiharris believes that most white people don't really know any black people, and our interactions are nothing more than perhaps a smile or brief greeting. I don't think that's true, but I'd like to know what fellow CFers think and have experienced themselves.

If people don't mind identifying their own race in their replies, that would be appreciated :)

Please keep replies civil. Anyone flaming or purposefully being rude, negative, or derogatory will be reported.

The poll is multi-choice, so choose as many answers as apply to you. It's also private, so no one can see your answers.

I'm white. I have several black friends. Good friends.

So your friend from another thread is wrong.

Rock on. I don't currently have any black friends (as in, people I hang out with at my house and stuff), but then, I don't have any white friends that fit that description, either lol. I'm a pretty introverted, closed-circle person when it comes to intimate relationships. I mainly stick to my family. However, I consider people at church and at my workplace to be my friends in a non-intimate sense. We talk, we chat, we laugh, we share. They're white, black, Hispanic, etc. I have had very close black friends and romantic relationships in the past, FTR. Also, several of my son's best friends have been black, as well as mixed race and white.

And if anyone didn't know from my avatar, I'm a white girl :)

True dat. I've had friends and boyfriends of other races as well, not just white and black. I have mixed-race nieces. My mom was married to a Greek man before she met my dad. There definitely is no "white people only" mentality in my family or where I live.

I wish I could say the same. Both my parents are extreme racists, and where I live? Hoo boy. This is like, the cradle of racism.

He's not wrong just because you happen to have black friends.

Recent public surveys bear him out. Demographically, it should not be suprising if most white people don't have non-white friends.

Link to said survey?

Also, do you think a survey should bear more weight than first-hand testimonies from actual people? If you've got a survey saying "most whites don't have non-white friends", but you go out and ask 100 white people about it, and 75% of them say they do... which is the truth?

I thought the claim was that white people don't have black friends?

Some clearly do.

Fair enough point, although if that is the only thing that creates that dynamic no one should have an issue with it. But alas, this is not the case.

Because it's interesting to hear peoples' stories.

Oh, I have many interesting aspects of my life. Compared to most of those things, having siblings of a different race than me barely registers in my brain even when people bring race up. But, I have given away my step-mother's race before in a sense by mentioning that many people on her side of the family are Hindu. So, she is from India. However, I have never stated my race on here or gave any indication of it as far as I can tell, so I will keep that to myself.

It isn't as if they didn't grow up in essentially the same culture I did, and my family has been having interracial pairings for generations without much thought about it. It's a nonissue, as far as my family is concerned, being of a different race only matters in how great of a tan you can get, and how much sunscreen you have to use ^_^

Sarah is kinda a hip chick. As far as chicks go, that is.

;)

Meh, I am really quite the spaz in person. It just doesn't translate to text because of the extra time I have to think about what I say. Plus, I am an autistic person who wears whatever I happen to throw on with a growing collection of carnivorous plants. I am an honestly weird person with unusual interests.

Hip is something I most certainly am not, joking wink face notwithstanding. I do however take pleasure in the fact that I seem to be memorable, because at least that means I am an interesting person, if nothing else.
