I think there is probably something to the culture thing for many people. Most people tend to stick to what is familiar/comfortable. Language is also a factor. Obviously there are exceptions.
I definitely think this is a factor. Everything from mannerisms to food to clothing to music to hairstyles can vary from one culture to another, even those living side by side. People have a choice to stick with what's familiar or reach out to someone who seems a little different. Not saying one way is wrong or right, either. I have no problem with someone who is more comfortable around "their own people" as long as it's not fueled by hate or prejudice or false notions.
