It seems that people are celebrating Lent more and more in non Catholic churches. Personally I think it's wonderful because of what it represents. For those that don't know basically it is a time of preparation of the heart. It is a time for us To prepare ourselves For the resurrection of our Lord. I like that churches are now celebrating Lent although you can just do it privately with your family if you'd like. Personally I do not see anything wrong with it. You can pray and fast you can give up something No matter how you celebrate it remember it was all for the resurrection. When starts on Ash Wednesday To Good Friday 40 days.
It seems like for Christmas and the birth of Christ people don't celebrate that the same way. All people do I'm not saying all people is prepare for presents and decorating a tree. Even fellow Christians Look so forward to Black Friday. Advent also is a time for preparation but that's another Topic.
Lent was not celebrated by the early Christians until the Council of Nicea.
Easter is not a day for chocolate bunnies And I'm sure we all know that. Anyway I just wanted to post a topic because I don't think it's bad that we are not Catholic Christians celebrate Lent.
Any Thoughts?

Several churches in my town take turns having a service on Tuesdays during lent. Not all attend each service (they are at 2:00 in the afternoon) but its there if people want it. Last year I went to the Catholic service as well as to the one my church, First Christian Church DOC, had. The Baptists don't participate but Methodists, Catholics, FCC, Lutheran and im sure im missing one or two. (seems there are two of every denomination in my town) My church also has a Good Friday service. Also, we have a Bible study this time of year as well.

No thanks. I'm not Catholic. I have no interest in engaging in Catholic penance rituals.

So, would you like to explain which part you disagree with? Or do you just want to make childish ad homs?

Study up and get back with us. The statement you made shows your ignorance of Lent.

Let me add that I don't practice Lent and never have.

So, would you like to tell me precisely what I've said about Lent that's "ignorant"? Or would you just like to be the 53 year old man who acts like a child?

Let me add that I don't practice Lent and never have.

Well, I did practice it for the first twenty-five years of my life. Since I did and you did not, why don't you go ahead and tell me what I've said about it that's wrong?

Now you're just being obtuse. It's quite obvious you don't like anyone telling you you're wrong, so I'll just let you keep thinking you're right.

To the contrary, if I'm wrong, then I welcome correction. Why do you think I keep asking what I've said that's wrong?

But telling somebody they're wrong without telling them what they've said or believe that's wrong, and then not telling them what the correct belief or understanding is, isn't helpful.

I gotta say, you just telling someone they are wrong isn't helping anything... you don't want to write a thesis on exactly where they are wrong, fine, but something of a specific would be helpful (because, at this point it does just seem like you are gainsaying.

It's amazing how so much ignorance can be put in so few words.

??? You say you dont practice lent..yet you said another poster is showing ignorance for saying it is a catholic tradition of pennance and they never practice it...
The poster asks for explanation and you tell them to study???
How can they study your mind?you implied an accusation ,explain it or retract it with apology.

Any Thoughts?

Thoughts...
it is rooted in works for salvation
It over looks the true heart of fasting
It is man made
It has no foundation in scripture what so ever.
It is spiritually meaningless to our relationship with God.

I looked it up and its history.
There just is no reason to observe it.

You're statements are based how much research?.
I've studied the subject and disagree on all points.

Each to his/her own.
Do you think that songs in church are not man-made? Well they are, noone claims they are a work, although they are in fact. They don't however speak of one's salvation in Christ. Just like lent.
I don't get that point at all.
I also don't get that you think it is rooted in works salvation.
Not true.
Lent isn't for salvation.

i come over harsh at times... sorry.

but my main point is.. it is following a man made custom.it has no foundation or commission in/from the Bible..
so whose word are we to follow... mans- or Gods?

as you know,i am ever unmoving on such matters.there is so many relentless doctrines that appear nice and woolley-soft on the outside.

but i care for and sorely desire truth. And the direct word of God is mostly all that is left in this noah-like modern world.
If any teaching cannot be shown to me as plain unambiguous truth from direct bible... i have no part with it.
