  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In blow to immigration reform, House `gang of seven’ bill looks dead
“It doesn’t appear that we’re going to move forward with the group of seven,” Dem Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a key player on immigration as a member of the gang, said in an interview with me. “The process is stalled. I don’t believe we’re going to produce a bill anytime soon.”

So how much more money are you willing to spend to "secure the border"?

Short answer: Yes.

I'm all for spending more to secure our border. It's not just border security, it's national security. It's not just controlling illegal immigration but stopping the flow of drugs and possible terrorist into our country. A sovereign nation must have control over its borders. We spend around $18 billion on it a year right now and I'm in favor of paying more. I'd be in favor of using active duty military for security as well. We also need to hit the people employing them too and enforce people overstaying on work visas etc.

if people want to come here, let them come legally.

Good, people who come here illegally shouldn't be rewarded with citizenship. Secure the border NOW.

The more I see drugs tearing up our land, the more I see border violence, the more I come to agree.

We have to work simultaneously on securing the border and reforming immigration so that being able to work legally in the US is possible. We need to accept that the idea of citizenship for those who have immigrated without following immigration rules is a major barrier to reform. Could long-term work visas (say 10+ years in length) be a possibility for those who have otherwise followed the rules? We also have to realize that for many of us, illegal immigrants are our friends and family. It really is heartbreaking to see friends and family just up and disappear, stuck with Aunt Rosa down in Mexico, while trying to get back home.

Now, can we do this also without making Southern Arizona a war site? It's a beautiful area.

The Senate bill increased security funding by 46 Billion.

How much more money do you think we should spend? 100 Billion? 200 Billion?

$46 Billion sounds appropriate. But he Senate bill also has a 'pathway to citizenship' for those who broke the law in coming here. I am not in favor of rewarding law-breakers with citizenship.

There is no alternative at this point....other than doing what the Tea Party suggest: Do NOTHING.

And as the Housing industry recovers, illegal immigration is already on the upswing (which isn't a surprise since labor supply & demand will always trump border security).

Really? There's "no alternative" to passing a bill to granting amnesty? How about actual border security and enforcement of our immigration laws for starters!

We do, unfortunately we can't afford the cost to implement a full scale border sealing.

It costs money.

Ok, please tell us how much would it cost.

I think the cost would be worth it to ensure illegals, drugs and terrorists aren't crossing into our nation. How does granting amnesty fix ANY of those problems?

If you want to re-argue the tired old "amnesty" claims go right ahead. It will get us no closer to a solution as "sending them all back" is simply not realistic. Nor is "sealing the border."

It depends on how you want it secured? A giant wall? Tethered Aerostat Radar system? Armed border patrol every couple of hundred yards? A giant moat? All of the above? Considering only 1 in 4 illegals are caught at the border and we already spend around 10 billion a year on Mexican border security, ramped up security may double the cost or more.

Even by putting armed border guards every 100 yards, all of those things can and would still get in. Amnesty was good enough for the great republican President Reagan, why is it a bad thing now?
