  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just for once let us all try to be honest.

Of course it is an American tradition now. If it was good enough for us then it is good enough for our kids and the next generation. If anything America is less progressive and more wanting to hold onto the past. You can no longer accuse America of being modern and advanced, compared to other countries.

I just say we go back to our roots. I don't believe in God, but if the OP wants to be honest, then we as atheists have to be honest too that the country was better off when we had some sort of higher authority to guide us. Now either we can all come together and fix these problems, or we can watch more of our country fall into poverty, and we can watch our scores get lower and lower.... Or we can start teaching this God again.... I don't like the idea of Creation, but it's worked for us in the past, so why not try again? It's better than the alternative.

Does the Wage slavery, rampart alcoholism, and rampart racism in today's America apply?

Sure, why not? A glorification of the past and its good old days remains glorification of the past good old days, though.

And wage slavery is nothing new either. In fact, sweat shops, labour conditions like Bangladesh etc are not unheard of in the US's past. It has really gotten better. Like so many things.

Are you going to provide anything to support your assertions? At all? Poverty existed before Darwin's book came along, and even after, it's fair to say the book wasn't immediately thrown into class curriculum. 'Teaching creation' didn't stop us from having the most bloody war in our history.

And since 'going back to our roots' would put me in chains working on a cotton field somewhere, you'll forgive me if I have no inclination for the 'good old days'.

You're a Christian who thinks that God is an imaginary being?
Sometimes a person will join and use a faith icon so they can post in Christian Only sections.

Since science is [ahem] neutral [/ahem], they like to spread their "neutrality" around.

???

You're scientific profile lacks a key piece of information.

In what country did anyone work in cotton fields in chains?

AV, I expected better from you!

Imagery aside, I hope you're not going to deny the reality of slavery in US history.

Is there some point to you questioning that particular part of what I said?
I was just wondering if your comment was historical or emotional.

But it's still around. How can you point a finger at someone else when the same crime happens during your oen lifetime? A crime is a crime. If you stab the first person twice, but only stab the second person once, have things really gotten that much better?

And in regards to slaver in America in the old days, don't forget how many Christians lost their lives to free those slaves. So the same argument applies to that time in history. Things WERE getting better during those times. Remember this little line? "All men are created equal". Not all "white men", but all men. So of course, even though they had slaves(people all over the world did), they planned to release them. And besides, why is it that when someone mentions "the good ol days", everyone assumes they're talking about slavery? Msybe I'm talking about the Revolutionary War, when we got our own freedom from the British.

Btw, this was a responce to both of you guys.

There's a reason for that, you know.

Sweden defines rape more broadly than most other countries and they make more concerted efforts to record and make their instances visible. Obviously, the wider your net is, the more fish you're going to catch. A simple Google search can reveal this.

It's funny what actually looking into things can do for you.
I did not know that (which is a bit embarrassing, considering I live here ^_^) thanks for the information!

Yes, actually. That's a 50% improvement. That's much better.

Besides, no one ever expects for crime or violence to completely disappear altogether.

don't forget how many Christians lost their lives to free those slaves.

Never said anything to the contrary. Just out of curiosity, though - how many? Do you have a specific number?

So of course, even though they had slaves(people all over the world did), they planned to release them.

All slaveowners had plans to release their slaves? Really? Are you familiar with the Civil War and the reasons behind it?

Msybe I'm talking about the Revolutionary War, when we got our own freedom from the British.

It wouldn't actually matter, because there were slaves in America back then, too. Even some of the Founding Fathers owned them.

Not slavery. And not segregation.

A crime is a crime. If you stab the first person twice, but only stab the second person once, have things really gotten that much better?

Getting drunk once in a while is not the same as being drunk every day from dawn 'til dusk.

And in regards to slaver in America in the old days, don't forget how many Christians lost their lives to free those slaves.

A lot were also active in -- you know? -- those temperance movements you've probably heard about.

Remember this little line? "All men are created equal". Not all "white men", but all men. So of course, even though they had slaves(people all over the world did), they planned to release them. You weren't talking about the good old days at all. But somebody upthread was talking about golden time before evolution reared its ugly head. And I though it would be fair to put that record straight. And with slavery, rapant alcoholism, wage slavery, racism we are really only scatching the surface.

And maybe should also review what you know of the constitution. "All men are created equal" most certainly did not apply to blacks way back when.
