John was writing to seven Christian communities in the Roman province of Asia concerning their trials and afflictions. In order to comfort them in their tribulations.

Why would John, writing to them about their problems, be spending over 90% of his energy to write cryptically about something completely irrelevant to them?

You're right, often things are written predictively. But that doesn't justify not concerning ourselves with the context of Scripture. If John is writing to these Christian communities and is interested in what is going on then and there; why wouldn't we look to see how the text would be relevant for its immediate audience?

If I wrote you a letter saying, "Hey, I know you've been going through a hard time lately. Well anyway, so, at some point thousands and thousands of years from now there is a big purple monster and this harlot drinking blood..." It would be pretty off.

John is writing to them, this is a letter for them. So it should be read with these Christians living in this region at this point in history in mind. Not speculate wildly about all the myriad possibilities there are as to what this or that could possibly mean.

Because without that context, the Revelation can be said to mean literally almost anything. And that is precisely what happens all the time.

So let's begin first with the immediate, given context and work our way from there--that seems to me to be a rather common sense method of doing good exegesis.

America will be part of the beast/10 kings. The world will be reshaped into ten sections. This is the North American sector.

John was not writing the Book of Revelation to give comfort to suffering Christians. He was given this Revelation to record what would happen at the end time, before God pours out his wrath. He wrote the Gospel of John to proclaim the good news of Jesus and wrote the Epistles of John to teach and admonish, and help Christians understand the doctrines of assurance, etc.
