  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do Orthodox believe in the Assumption of Mary?

We believe in the Dormition and then Assumption. ie, we believe the Virgin Mary died and then was assumed into heaven. This is what many Catholics believe, as well, but some Catholics believe she was assumed into heaven without dying (we do not believe that).

Also, it's not a dogma in our Church.

Whether the virgin mary was assumed is a matter of theological opinion - Theologumena ...

I wouldn't say that. The text of the service is pretty clear that after she died, she was translated bodily to heaven. That is one of the main theological points of the feast - the first fruits of the Resurrection.

Doesn't the Church dedicate a day on the calendar for the non-religious?...

Protestant Jews may not teach in this forum, especially when they're dead wrong.

Just sayin'.

It''s not dogma in teh sense that it's not in our creed or anything, but it's definitely THE teaching of the church. Does that make it dogma? I kinda think so. Does that make is salvific? Probably not.

Right. Only things that are salvific to our souls are dogma in the Orthodox Church.

I know that this is a later Roman Catholic dogma, but do Orthodox believe essentially the same thing?

If it is different in what ways?

Yes, we believe the same thing and it is the teaching of Orthodoxy regardless of it being called "dogma" or not. There's even a fast/feast dedicated to it!

Just in case there is any confusion here, "Assumption" = "Dormition." It is contemporary Catholics (and from what I've gathered, of a mistaken persuasion) that think that Mary was assumed without first dying. See:

The Church has never formally defined whether she died or not, and the integrity of the doctrine of the Assumption would not be impaired if she did not in fact die, but the almost universal consensus is that she did die. Pope Pius XII, in Munificentissimus Deus (1950), defined that Mary, "after the completion of her earthly life" (note the silence regarding her death), "was assumed body and soul into the glory of heaven."
