  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Nope. It's just another shoddy Apple product. Plus, I don't know how long it will be on the shelves once Google, Samsung, and HTC sue the pants off them for multiple patent infringements.

Haha I had some co-workers try to tell me that same thing, I don't think Apple would've announced it if Samsung and HTC stood a reasonable chance in court. I guess we'll see though.

Initial reviews of it following the announcement seem to indicate its anything but shoddy too. In fact, they're saying the fit and finish is quite superb.

All they really did different was double the ram and processor speed as well as make the phone longer. That is not exactly a huge upgrade and it's also still outdated hardware wise.

As for the lawsuits... timing is everything as is going in with the right information. These companies want Apple out of the game because of the crap Apple has been pulling with them. Samsung is a big player in this because of the recent lawsuits that Apple filed against them. The amusing thing is that Apple uses Samsung hardware in their devices. We'll see how long that lasts. Googlerolla is also in the process filing lawsuits that would essentially take Apple out of the market all together because if they win, the iPhone and iPad won't be allowed to be sold in the US.

I personally hope they destroy Apple. Terrible company with a terrible history.

If you say so bro.

I've been an Apple user for 23 years or so and absolutely love the company, their business model and their products. So... Different strokes.

Is it going to be that different?
I wont be running out to buy one, but will get an upgrade in October.

It's either the iPhone 5 or Samsung.

It has LTE, an A6 processor, a 4" screen (it's longer not wider), iOS 6, a new "lightning" dock connector and the back is aluminum now instead of glass.

I think it's pretty awesome. I'm not eligible until October 7, but I'll definitely get some as soon as I can that day.

The Galaxy S III is a nice phone, but I like that the iPhone isn't as cumbersome in your hand, plus I'm just a die hard Apple fan.

Yes, a great business model of stealing other peoples ideas to make your own and then suing the inventors. Fantastically moral business model there. The only thing Steve Jobs was good at was presenting new products in a charismatic way that got people to listen, ripping people off and being an overall douchebag.

But oh well, different strokes. Enjoy that ram you can't swap and the glued on display in the new MBP. :p

Yeah, I never really looked at it that way but... yeah, It's pretty much just a minor upgrade from what we can tell.

iOS 6 seems to have some cool features though.

Really, with any operating system, it's the customize-ability that makes or breaks it.
Even with iOS, some of the best apps are only available if you Jail-Break.

I might have to opt for an android phone for my next upgrade.

I don't fault anyone for choosing an Android, some people just prefer the hardware and software over Apple's and that's totally cool. Admittedly if Apple hadn't started producing CDMA iPhones in 2011 I would've bought a droid (probably would've gotten the Galaxy S III) but alas Apple came through for us VZW Apple fans.

I think the improvements may seem minor but in other ways they seem significant - like the 4" screen that still fits comfortably in your hand and the addition of LTE. Plus iOS 6 is pretty nifty - I'm running it on my iPhone 4 right now, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the features that only work on the 4S/5 like Siri and Flyover Maps.

Yeah, well Apple is definitely good and producing things than, can be more economical. Like the iMac, an, all-in-one type PC, that's been saving people from desktop clutter for a long time.

Now, of course, outside of their mobile devices, most the hardware is 3rd party anyway. So their biggest advantage is really just iOS.

Generally it's worth it to upgrade an iDevice every 2-3 generations. Otherwise, you don't notice much difference.

Yeah I agree. I didn't want the 4S when I heard about it cause I knew that it wouldn't be much of an improvement over the 4 except for the A5 processor and Siri.

I definitely love all Mac computers, I've been using them since 1989 or so and they're fantastic. I've been in video production since 2005-06 and I definitely prefer the Mac platform over alternatives.

and the back is aluminum now instead of glass.

Apparently people are already complaining that their phone backs are getting scratched up. Let's hope no one drops their phone or you'll start hearing about dented backs as well. Aluminum (unless it's Durall which used to be used to make auto body panels) has very little durability and is not the metal to be used when strength/protection is a factor. Not to mention it is also a lot more expensive than the stainless steel they used on the earlier phones; I work for a steel company, & we require all customers to pay for the full sheet even if only part of it gets used.

Someone upthread mentioned about Samsung... as someone who loves her G2, I'd love to see Samsung play tit-for-tat with Crapple over the larger screen on the iPhone5. Hey... if rounded corners can win a patent case...

Apparently it faired well in some drop tests.

Samsung's ad campaign is clever but also a little excessive. I mean, 90 seconds of basically harping on iPhone users, an argument can be made that they're shooting themselves in the foot cause they're alienating potential customers rather than enticing them.

Admittedly, I'm biased, and Apple hasn't been completely silent with their responses. This is just my opinion though...

I'm quite a fan of Android, i chose it over iOS because of it's freedom when it comes to apps and price(Which also comes with the added benefit of choice of mobile phone...or handset if you prefer:p.)

My current phone is a Sony Xperia P.
While i'm not a fan of Sony, it is a pretty great phone.
Shame it's GPU and battery life are pretty weak.
I think phones are getting a bit big now days.
My smaller-than-average hands make one handed use impossible on bigger phones.:((Comes hand in hand with being a shorter-than-average 5'5")

If i was to upgrade today; i'd be looking at the Motorola RAZR M.

That makes sense to me. My brother-in-law is a programmer and opted to take his wife's hand-me-down 1st gen Android instead of an iPhone cause he's a programmer venturing into the app market.

Yeah I know what you mean about some phones getting bigger, I've played with two different co-workers Samsung Galaxy S III's and they both felt cumbersome because of their width. That's just my opinion though, I know they're happy with them.

I think the 2:3 screen aspect ratio is a major culprit in making phones feel too big to use with one hand.
Even the Galaxy SII with it's 4.3 inch screen seems too wide to me.
I prefer a 9:16 screen.

The black anodized coating on my 5 is already scratching off just from coming into contact with my keys or whatever. Gonna have to get a case for sure.

I'm considering getting one after my 5 comes later this month, I've never been a case guy but I like to keep my things (especially apple things) pristine.
