  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sure.
But because you said it, you likely have thick enough skin to handle any flack.
I had to read that again, as if I was the one who has written something really stupid.
I honestly, for the life of me, cannot believe that anyone would actually think that such an outrageous proposition be true, let alone think anyone else could ever possibly accept it.
Or that anyone would want to believe it.
The story goes that Adam walked with God in the Garden.
Going on the premise of the story, Adam wouldn't get eaten.
nicely put, it is just a story.
Then Adam split with God, got banished from the Garden, and no longer walked with God.
If this is a real story (which most of us know it isn't, as there was no Adam and Eve who lived 6,000 years ago and who are the parents of all humankind) then your god is a childish monster who throws his dummy out of the pram with impunity (causing collosal damage along the way) and in no way deserves worship or thanks. He is worse than the supposed prince of evil.
If it is just an allegory, then it explains nothing.

So here we are....not walking side by side with God.....and mad because our babies get eaten by croc's. And mad because we die. I guess we need a Savior.
The problem with your account is that you are adding an active agent into everything.
You do not need a god to explain why some people die horribly, some people live happy peaceful lives - and we all know that some of them do not deserve this.
So you would have us believe that your god works in mysterious ways, yet everything behaves like he is not controlling anything.
We could do with a saviour, certainly - but not need.
Thanks. You made a good illustration of why we need a Savior.
Yup, and here is my suggestion:

_42064554_irwin_getty400.jpg

There would be a lot less people eaten by crocs if this guy was still around, and he tried to help all of the animals, not just humans born into one particular faith.

Because we all know that faith is no indicator of a good life or a good death, or anything for that matter.

And I'm explaining that wouldn't be the case if Adam had not sinned.

The cells in your body are replaced an average of 7 times in your life.
Researchers will tell you there is no clear reason for that to stop.
They expect to find the cause for "natural" death some day.

There is a very clear reason for the cessation of cell replenishment, it is called death. The cause of death is well understood. I would suggest that you and your researchers need to go back to school and get an education.

How can something that happened 6,000 years ago be the cause of something that happened 4.5 billion years ago? Before Adam and Eve came along we are told: "1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." I do not know that a unstable crust is good. But God seems to think it is.

The residents of Japan, for starters, respectfully disagree with God.

Most people use the brain as the indicator of death, since your heart can be resuscitated.

There is a 1% chance of resuscitation so long as it is performed in the first few minutes of heart cessation. Resuscitation is so unlikely it would be considered a trivial arguement but yes your point regarding the brain is more accurate.

What is ultimately good or bad for the soul.

What is ultimately good or bad for the soul.
According to tripartitism, a born-again believer's soul is fed by the fruit of the Spirit, which gets its nourishment from the Word of God.

The two in turn, help to nourish the body by strengthening the immune system.

It's kind of like a circle: the body reads the Word, which feeds the Spirit, which nourishes the soul, which nourishes the body.

Very few people, including myself, have that harmony ... in my opinion.

The soul is an abstract concept for which there is no evidence....
So how would you expect me to accept that we all have a soul and it lives for ever?

Just one question AV, if the soull is eternal and non-corporeal, why would it need nourishment?
Surely the noureshment is a requirement of a physical body or an emotional-dependant physicl brain, none of which is present in your idea of a soul?

As abstract as the animation of your body, thought, emotions, etc.

The spirit is life.

Although these 'abstract' notions have physical roots which can be studied. (so they are not so abstract after all).
Emotions have physical causes, and effect a physical brain.

The spirit is life.
Soul, spirit - whatever next?
Ether?

These things only exist inside your head, otherwise they would be measurable and identifiable.

If spirit is life, then bacteria must have a spirit.
So whatabout mitichondria, they exhibit signs of life - do they have a spirit?
How about chloroplasts?

The physical is the tabernacle, the tent, the shell, or the skin. The outermost portion that is shed.

"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." (2 Cor 5:1)

These things only exist inside your head

They permeate the entire body, actually.

Yep.

It sounds like a measurable effect, though - just how strengthened does the immune system get?

I'm not talking about vitamin C here; I'm talking about the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Galatians 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

You know what I'm gonna ask for now - yup, evidence.
Even something as simple as - how do you know that would do.

Because without evidence, how do we know if people are just making this up as they go along?

They why don't we just skip Q&A, since it all boils down to one side demanding evidence, and the other side demanding faith?

At first, a story from the Bible was told.

Then the story was ridiculed because of its depiction of God as being unjust.

When I chimed in and pointed out that we don't know the whole story; then the trump card is play: "Let's see evidence."

Why wasn't evidence asked for up front, rather than try to slip an ad hominem on God through?

I'll tell you why.

Because my answer caught you off-guard, didn't it?

So now you're retreating behind your "shield of faith" and demanding evidence.

I don't know how many times I've seen that happen here.

It happens a lot with Noah's flood.

Someone wants to know why God didn't just blink everyone out of existence, rather than drown them slowly; and when I point out that drowning them gave them time to repent; the conversation usually ends up with a demand for evidence of the Flood in the first place.

Like I say ... you Internet scientists are a dime a dozen, with 9¢ change.

Even another poster, who followed me back here from another site, appears to have left this place because of its lack of scientists.
