  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Why do so many people not follow this commandment? The majority worship and pray on Sundays, which would be the first day of the week.

In France, Monday is the first day of the week. If you care about it that much, make that happen here.

It's the question at the forefront of philosophical lectures across the nation - "What day is the beginning of the week?"!
Sunday is the first day of the week for all those who use the calender Julius Caesar created. If I were christian I would think if you wanna to keep sunday holy, then you should adopt a new calender that has Sunday as the sabbath, and not Saturday.

One could argue that the Sabbath hasn't changed: one day, and each seventh day thereafter, is the Sabbath. If the Julian Calendar redefines the week to make the Sabbath the beginning, rather than the end, of the week, then so be it.

How is Sunday the "first day of the week"?

Yeah but it doesn't. Maybe Christians can fight to do it! But until they do, maybe they should change their day of worship to reflect their God's wishes rather than "cherry pick" which commandments they choose to follow
Just a thought

Because... it is. Saturday and Sunday form the weekend - the two ends of the week. The Sabbath is on a Saturday because God rested on the last day of the week, while the Christian day of rest is on a Sunday because Jesus rose on a Sunday.

Christians don't observe the Sabbath, they observe Jesus' resurrection.

If you say so.
It's right there in their names:

Sunday - Sun's day - the Sun
Monday - Moon's day - the Moon
Tuesday - Tir's day - the Norse god Týr (aka the Roman god Mars)
Wednesday - Wodanaz's day - the Norse god Wodanaz, Wodin, or Odin
Thursday - Thor's day - the Norse god Thor
Friday - Frigg's day - the Norse goddess Frigg (aka the Roman goddess Venus)
Saturday - Saturn's day - the Roman god Saturn

Not according to many calendars. In the Swedish calendar, Sunday isn't the beginning of the week, Monday is.

And this conforms with International Organization for Standards ISO 8601, in which Monday is the first day of the week.

Is your religion ISO compliant?

I'm aware of that, but I reject that particular standard :p It makes sense to me that Saturday and Sunday form the 'ends' of the week, like the two white 'ends' of a stage magician's wand. It doesn't matter all that much - I'm not so fussed as to whether a particular Sunday is the 43rd or 44th week of the year - but still, that's my thinking.

Is your religion ISO compliant?
I'm an atheist.

I'm not familiar with what they do in Swedan, but in the USA we observe the Julian calender. Maybe the Christians in Swedan have it right and those in America should either adopt the Swedish calender or change their worship days; what do you think?
