I agree, how can a person make themselves believe something that they don't believe is true?That would be a profoundly dishonest way of being an atheist, and I don't think you'll find many atheists like that.
For me, it's not a matter of accepting or rejecting. I can't choose what I believe, no more than I can choose to like pepperssick
or hate chocolate

. It's just that I've never seen a convincing sign that God (or any other god) exists. I would be lying if I pretended to believe in God, and that has nothing to do with whether I want to believe in him or not.
How can they disbelieve something they think is true?
I believe Jesus rose from the grave, and I believe he will return to give us eternal life too. But I can't make anyone else believe that.
