Very interesting. Also, I am glad they mentioned the trait which makes you immune to both the plague, small pox, AND HIV. Super humans!

I am hoping this will lead to a cure, and it is FREELY passed out. It won't do any good if there is a cure and only rich westerners can get it, which I am afraid will happen. :(

No kidding! I wonder if he can still transmit the disease....

That would be the thing I'd wonder about too. For those who have immunity to the virus, there are two types:

1) Those who will never get it. They are completely immune. The body destroys the virus.
2) Those who will carry and transmit the virus but never become 'sick' from it.

I'd almost bet on him being able to carry and transmit it still.

This is encouraging news for sure. And quite a remarkable outcome!
(I now want to do some serious research into this aspect of HIV and immunity.)

As for him transmitting it now - I am sure he could. Even if it is non-replicating, it is still present. And if it is present, there is a possibility, I am sure, though I have no clue as to a number to put to that probability, that it could still be transmitted. I would assume, as with any virus, even those who build or naturally have an immunity can still be vectors without have any effects (without "catching" the virus, so to speak).

I also, wholeheartedly and fully, feel if a cure can be garnered from this it should be made available (somehow) to a greater population than simply those that have the money. It is far too great a threat and plague on the human population overall to leave it up to money and affluence of the patients to decide the fate of the disease.
[Though, I will point out, in a pessimistic point though it is, the money for such a cure must come from somewhere each and every time that it is given.]

If this is true then I'm hoping Africa is one of the first places to receive it. It's an epidemic there and we've sent enough money and resources there that would hopefully fund its distribution.

^This.

That's great news:) I volunteered at an HIV/AIDS orphanage years ago and it was heart-breaking to see all the babies and young children with HIV. I know that a lot of African Governments can offer subsidized ARV drugs in Africa but they're still too expensive for most of the sufferers to afford.

I had never heard about this 1% of people who are immune to HIV. That is SO amazing.

It also makes me want to be tested and if I'm one of the 1%, donate my marrow.

Yeah it is extremely rare. It is all on google

There are such a small number of immune people and such a large number of HIV infected people it's unlikely we can cure with bone marrow transplants. Not to mention that there is the issue with compatibility, etc.

I did know about the immune people. Was watching something about the pox vs. HIV a couple years ago. They did community studies in Europe with more isolated genetic groups that were documented to have suffered in the plagues. It was a really neat show. Virology is kind of a passion of mine.

You guys keep saying "it" - are you referring to a future vaccine or cure (which doesn't yet exist) or are you referring to the bone marrow transplant surgery (which can't possibly be some sort of world-wide therapy because each surgery carries a high risk of fatality and is only done on a case-by-case basis)?
